Title: Your signature mixed drink :monocle
Post by: Eel O'Brian on September 28, 2011, 09:36:55 AM
Inspired by the beer thread.

Mine has always been the Dirty Martini.  Drop of Vermouth (and I do mean a DROP, swirled around in the glass),  decent quality vodka (depends, I like Three Olive fine), splash of olive juice/brine (around 1/4 of a shot), double olives on the pick, and a single cocktail onion dropped into bottom of the glass.  I like them so much I even have a little kit I keep on the shelf with shaker, measuring shot glass, and glass picks.

I also like a good Bloody Mary.  This place - http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/ - makes the best Bloody Mary I have ever had.

Can't do shots of anything anymore.  I have a friend my age who still spends his weekend nights chasing vodka shots with beer, I would imagine his liver looks like one of those things you see in jars at county fair sideshows.

Long Island Ice Tea

if the night doesn't end up with you pissing your pants and forgetting your name then it's pretty much pointless

(lol, i will hit 150 days with out drinking anything in about 4 days time - i've forgotten the joy of booze)

The first time I had one of these was in Toronto, ironically.

Either white/black russian or a Jack and Coke with a tad extra coke. Both with cherry. Mostly a white/black russian; my favorite mixed drink.

Vodka tonic or whiskey sour.  Tend not to go with a whiskey sour unless I have an idea of how the bartender mixes the drink, though.

I'd make a pitcher of kamikaze back in the day. Now I just prefer an 18 year old Jameson.

Jack Daniels and coke

If it's Single Barrel or Gentleman's Jack then just on the rocks.

If not that, then some OJ and vodka will do just fine.

I don't do mixed drinks, unless "hot water and whisky" counts.

I guess about once every couple years I'll have whisky, Bailey's, Kahlua, on ice -- I was told this is a "B-52," then a bartender told me, "No, son."

I wish I knew a bar where the bartenders were old enough to call me "son" lol

yeah, i like whiskey sours, too, they're just so hit or miss depending on the bartender

i like a good white russian every once in a while, but once i have that i can't drink anything else

At the end of the day if I was drinking on my own i'd just have a scotch/bourbon neat. It was just fun to order something I was too lazy to mix correctly on my own while I was out.

If I'm drinking to get drunk, then whiskey neat with a shitty beer chaser.

If I'm drinking socially, probably the White Russian.  The Dude abides.

Moscow Mule (http://wiki.webtender.com/wiki/Moscow_Mule)

prefer Fever Tree ginger beer and Tito's Vodka

lime and mint required, copper mug preferred

btw that is "signature" in the strongest sense of the term - people expect it when they come to our parties, and I own a delacquered, hand-polished set of copper mugs for serving

my fiancée's signature cocktail is self-created:

1.5 oz gin (Citadelle or Bluecoat)
1.0 oz Canton
top with lemonade
lemon garnish
maraschino cherry garnish

Basically a reconstructed Tom Collins.

Old-fashioned and gin-and-tonic are my go-to drinks in public. Turns out, even the cheapest whisky is delicious when mixed with equal parts fruit and sugar. :shh

Used to be something I called Cough Syrup until an unfortunate incident with my heart one New Years.

1/4 pt Grey Goose
1/4 pt Cherry Dr. P
1/4 pt Rhythm caffeinated vodka liqueur
1/4 pt Red Bull

Add Maraschino cherries/grenadine to taste.  Chug.

Now it's just whiskey, no rocks.

:bow

I love these types of drinks.

I had a real good drink fairly recently:
- some chargrilled pineapple flavoured tequila
- muddled palm sugar and lime wedges
- lots of ice

it was great! Cant remember the name of the cocktail. It was something spanish

Anything, really. Youre only going to taste the kahlua and milk. You wouldnt want to waste anything expensive on a white russian.

Preeeeeetty much what Scenester said.  I wouldn't use the cheapest shit you can find but there's nothing wrong with using some Smirnoff or Stoli.
Title: Re: Your signature mixed drink :monocle

yeah you NEVER want to go too cheap, even for very basic drinks like a white russian. Absolut is a smooth, general vodka, no idea if it's very expensive in the US

you wasted Grey Goose on that shit? I mean, I'd down one of those, but its a pretty low-brow drink for such good vodka.

how many did you drink before you had a heart attack?

tl;dr: it improves the taste, but it's still nowhere as good as top-shelf, and it quickly destroys the filter

I'm not much of a whisky guy - I have a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black and some Glenfidditch 12-Year, plus some Bulleit and Buffalo Trace Bourbon.

(Whisky's in the back cause I barely ever drink it. :( Come over and drink my whisky!)

What happened? Chest pains? Arrhythmia?

how many did you drink before you had a heart attack?

Four pint glasses of this in 30 mins, a bit heavy handed on the vodka.  Ex was at a party, and I was trying to make it so I couldn't see her anymore.  Heart ended up going pitter-pat too fast, and it really messed with my mind.  Ended up calling someone for a ride home (which I never do) and took my blood pressure once I got home, which had tanked to the point where I probably should have been dead.  Don't remember off hand exactly what it was.  Though I remember my pulse being somewhere over 120 bpm.

Bourbon neat.  If I'm feeling crazy I might get a couple ice cubes.

This.

Although if I'm looking for a mixed drink, then I like a good Kentucky Highball.  Ale-8-One (local ginger ale from Kentucky) and Maker's Mark on ice.

One thing I learned from a friend is that if you truly take pride in your bourbon, you'll never mix a top shelf with ANYTHING.  Maker's ain't exactly top shelf, but it isn't the bottom of the barrel either.

Usually I drink good stuff neat but if I'm going a cheapish bourbon my drink is a good 'ol Old Fashioned - orange peel squeezed and rubbed round the glass, bourbon + a dark molassesy sugar syrup + ice. And getting fancy chuck a thinly sliced string of orange peel in the top

I've been told those are good, but I've never had one myself.  Might have to try that sometime.

BTW, adding real honey to your bourbon or whiskey is ten times better than anything you can buy off a shelf that's mixed with honey flavoring.

Sazeracs are good too. Similar but with rye whiskey or cognac and a little bit of absinthe and bitters or something, never made one just get 'em when I'm somewhere nice, can't stand American Honey and its ilk. Terrible stuff

I love canadian whiskey! Best thing you maple folks have ever done aside from Bret Hart.

Must've never had that other great Highly Psychoactive and Resinous Canadian export. The great thing is that good Canadian Outdoor is the same price as mid-grade Kentucky domestic, yet quite a bit better.

Hooray for huge plant number thresholds in Canada!!

He said the threshold for them even to bother to check out a Grow-op there is 400 plants :o

Here 100 plants is a federal case and they usually hit you with trafficking AND promotion which is bad cause that means you end up on the List.

Bahrain sounds like the Red River Gorge of the middle east. By that I mean like it is a bit wilder tourist destination than the nearby territories.

Early Times ain't quite bourbon, but it's the best cheap whiskey I've found to date.

It's a decent bourbon, not one of my favorites, but good.

But can you think of a better value for your money?  I'd honestly like to know if you think there is a better 1L bottle of bourbon for $15.

You make a good point there.  For the cost, it is pretty good.
