(DEMI PROTIP: you can change your vote by clicking "remove vote" because i, van cruncheon, am a dumbass and missed a pair of worthy entries)

Very good year for me.

I enjoyed alot of stuff. ALOT. Probably the strongest year for me game wise I can remember in a long time. If I was to make a list it would include easily 10 games.

My favorite games of the year were Dead Space 2, Skyrim, and LA Noire. LA Noire and Dead Space 2 stuck with me all year. And Skyrim is kinda blowing me away right now.

Still relatively early in Skyrim but its probably going to be my goty among what I played.

You're missing Skyward Sword & Catherine.

Too early to tell about the former, latter might be my pick since Xenoblade was last year.

It's hard. I'm having so much fun with Saints Row 3, almost as much as I have been with Skyrim.

Can you add Skyrow as an option?

Top three games this year for me:

1. Saints Row 3
2. Skyrim
3. Portal 2

No, I was talking about the folks suggesting Catherine and Xenoblade and Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky (:lol) as worthy of inclusion on a GOTY poll. Skyrim's not my thing but I have no beef with those who love it. It's an Actual Game.

My top best 2011 games:

1. Xenoblade
2. Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
3. Dead Space 2
4. Uncharted 3
5. Batman Arkham Asylum

93868. Saint's Row 3. I really can't get into Saint's Row. I really hated the first two games.

I dunno, I'm 20 hours in Trails of Sky and I'm still waiting for it to get "great".

It's alright, but extremely slow, easy, and full of generic animu stuff (just got done watching the SCHOOL ARC where you sit and watch 30 mins of text while they get ready to perform a high school play  :'( )

I hear it picks up at the end, but I can't imagine it as a GoTY contender.  Seems 7-8/10ish.

Dude. The game PULLED me away from Skyrim.

In any case, for any non-believers I recently did a survival mission in SR3. Survival missions are ones where you receive a phone call and you're ordered to kill waves upon waves of henchmen. In this case, it was wave after wave of furries at the costume clothes shop. Why? Because "that's how they get more of their kind!"

Amazing.

I could almost support a Dark Souls nom.  It may be valid to write off some of its internal faults as intentional to make the game artificially more obtuse and, as a result, more difficult --balance issues aside, since they tend to benefit the player too much rather than hinder him-- but I don't think the jank is forgivable, the framerate in particular.  I think it's a lot of fun for the most part, I like the art, I like how intense and creepy it is, and I think its interesting what it says about game design from a meta-perspective, but it's strictly Bollywood gaming.

i considered adding dark souls, but the uneven pacing, the framerate in blighttown, and the -- as you put it -- obtuse old-school approach to problem-solving keeps it from the top tier. i'm not gonna reward the nostalgia of idiots for honestly SUCKY old world pc and nes gaming tropes. still, great game, and awesome ambience/artwork.

To be honest Catherine is the worst game I've played this year.  If it weren't for the o-so-mature subject matter ( :lol ) that weeaboos use to defend themselves from attacks they jerk it to cartoons it would have been rated for what it is, a sup-par ps1 era puzzler.

When I gave up on Catherine halfway through, I worried I wasn't a gamer anymore. Then I played BATMAN and SAINTS ROW 3 and realized I like AWESOME games where you get to DO THINGS - not boring games where the hardest decision you have to make is determining whether the story sucks more or less than the gameplay.

I wouldn't say Catherine is the best puzzle game due to the fact that non-puzzle elements permeate the game's design. It's clearly MORE than simply a puzzle game. I'd rather play PQ2 or Crush on psp.

Saints Row 3 is the kind of game that I want to put at the top of my list, because it's so off-the-wall and it only focuses on doing on thing: being really fun all the time. But I'm not quite there yet, some minor issues [like the cutscenes and the lack of new activities] are holding it back just enough to where it's fighting over second place behind Skyrim.

Haven't played Arkham City yet, so we'll see how that goes next week when the PC version finally comes out.

I'm at about 20-25% right now, I figure that's where it really starts to open up. I mean, I'm not really complaining all that much about the game or anything, it's been great so far. But if it gets even better from here on...well...great!

But it's a tough battle to pull me away from Skryim and Arkham City is just days away. :(

Still waiting for KOF13, but so far the best video games this year have been:

1. Akai Katana Shin
2. Dark Souls
3. Hard Corps Uprising
4. Catherine
5. Child of Eden
6. Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets
7. Strania
8. Bangai-O HD
9. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (haven't bought Ultimate yet)
10. Yakuza 4*

Didn't put much thought into the ordering, aside from Akai Katana being leagues ahead of everything else.

*I needed a 10th game to make it even. It was good, but it's mostly about the story and such and not the greatest game.

Catherine is the best puzzle game this generation.  Puzzle games = good stuff.  Nice challenge & very rewarding.

The fact that it has good cutscenes, good visuals, and good music to go along with it is just fluff.

Yes it is. Catherine on Hard = best puzzle game this gen, no competition. Obelisk and Rapunzel are fucking terrible, but the rest is an A+ puzzle game. Story/cutscenes were okay and the music was great.

Everyone is liking Skyrim because those of us who think Bethesda couldn't design a game if their life depended on it aren't giving them $50 to "evaluate it" for ourselves.  Most people splooging over it are the same group who couldn't stop singing praises of Fallout 3 or Oblivion.  Where is the person who thought Fallout 3 was an embarrassment to the Fallout name, Oblivion a total bore, and loves Skyrim to death and thinks it's the best WRPG in ages?

Will gladly play it with an open mind a year from now when the "all DLC & awesome fan mods alleviating problems included for $9.99" version is released.

I'm holding back on Skyrim because the same comments I'm hearing about Skyrim were pretty much the same that I heard when Oblivion came out.  While it is nice to see that they made an Elder Scrolls game like Fallout 3, I'm still waiting a couple of months for the hype to die down.  It's funny to see so many people rip on Oblivion when some of them at GAF were creaming themselves over the game skyrim style back in 2006.

Skyrim is only gonna get better with patches and mods and it might even drop in price somewhere along the way too (GOTY edition, etc). So there is no point in rushing it.

A lot of the same people who are jizzing over Skyrim in 2011 were the same people who were jizzing over Oblivion in 2006 who were the same people who were ripping on Oblivion from 2007 on.  Not saying that it would be a shitty game but it's a red flag to me.  That and I've been burned by too many bloated and buggy Bethesda games to foolishly jump in head first.

i have never really played Oblivion so my frame of reference isn't perfect. However I think Fallout 3 and New Vegas are both really good games and Skyrim is better than both.

Fallout 3 has a really expansive world and some good quests but i felt it wasn't really very satisfying to explore because there was never anything to find of worth.
New Vegas has some really great side quests and characters but i didn't like that the world felt smaller and more cramped.

Skyrim solves both problems by having an expansive world that is dense with content and has really great quests. It's basically Bethesda taking everything they've learned from making these kinds of games and putting it all together.

I don't think this is the case. There's the occasional person like Drinky who flip flopped but I think MOST of us have been pretty consistent here. Triumph and I for example have gone on the record MULTIPLE TIMES in the past trolling pre-Fallout 3 Bethesda games and we both love it.

My general rule of thumb is don't trust anyone's opinion about any game within the first couple weeks of release.  Gamers are particularly bad for "love you today, who the fuck are you tomorrow", so I like to see how things settle before I take anything into account.

how's that a bad thing? you saying you wouldn't have a love-in phase with a great game, either? or do you prefer a more abusive relationship, ala nights 2

seriously, it's not like any of us boretards aren't acknowledging flaws in these games. are you saying that YOU'D go into playing skyrim looking for flaws -- and if so, wouldn't that make YOU the one getting played? if it doesn't interest you, it doesn't interest you, so don't force yourself onto any bandwagons on OUR account, muchacho

And actual fun quests!

Oblivion had some good quests [Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and the Daedra princes], but, Skyrim's quests feel like the'yre deeper and more closely integrated into the world.

And the NPCs don't look like deformed mutants.

Oh, I'm as guilty of it as the next person, but NiGHTS 2 should illustrate exactly why it's dangerous to listen to someone in that love-in phase.

oh christ, now you've got sand in your vagina.  okay, let me explain this: some people make recommendations without considering the preferences of the person they are recommending to.  they are most likely to do this when they are in the love-in phase of the game and really want other people to feel the love.  this can lead to some iffy recommendations.

I'm not forcing myself onto any bandwagons here.  I haven't played a single open world game that I liked, so I know I won't like this one.

who's recommending this to *you*? not i, mang. plus if you know it ain't your thang, why "wait a couple weeks"

I agree with Oscar about release hype, though I think he's mistaken in regards to some people. I think the folks here are an honest bunch. We realize the games we love often have flaws and we're accepting of this. Despite my love for Skyrim, Saints Row 3 and Portal 2, I've well documented some well grounded complaints towards the games. I don't blame the people who don't believe the Skyrim accolades for being skeptical, because I was when I picked up myself. The only reason I bought the game was because I really REALLY enjoyed Fallout 3 and I was gambling, but I felt in my gut that I would enjoy it, and came away blown away.

So i can't really blame anyone being skeptical towards all the love towards Skyrim, because Bethesda's past reputation has kinda made that a guaranteed thang.

Honestly, I'd rather talk about THQ gimping Saints Row The Third's content in favor of dlc shenanigans.

i can pick at skyrim all day. hell, tvc15 and i nitpicked it for hours at lunch on monday. i might start nitpicking at it here, because it's fun to deconstruct things and discuss what sucks amidst as the occasional fugue of grating positivism. does that mean i now think it's shit? no. i'm no etoilet, and i'm not getting paid. i don't sink 30+ hours (probably a lot more) into a game and then go "well, that was actually shit." even with oblivion, although i think i had some kinda ocd thing goin' on with that game.

I'm not sure if we can blame dlc here though, I could be wrong.

The main issue I take is that many story missions are just side activities. Thankfully, once you get past that part of the game the campaign is better served.

Honestly, I think it's a testament of the game's high quality that the only big issue I have with it (aside from not allowing us to replay missions for co-op fun!) are ALL story-related, but that's mostly the inner Saints fan in me talking and probably isn't really negligible to anyone who hasn't played Saints Row 2.

Depends on what kind of poo concentration we're talking.

Man, reading threads like this just makes me really want to get back into videogames. I could sort of justify it now that I work for a game publisher and all, but they take up SO MUCH TIME! somebody needs to invent a way to package games together with the time it takes to play them.

Posted this in another thread but I played a lot of games this year and really enjoyed an unusually high number.

Arkham City
NBA 2k12
Dead Space 2
Portal 2
MW 3
Gears 3
Battlefield 3
Deus Ex
LA Noire
Crysis 2
Bulletstorm

Not all goty contenders but I legit enjoyed large aspects of them all.

And that still leaves Renegade Ops, Witcher 2, Child of Eden, & Saints Row 3 all of which I've barely played or own and haven't played at all. Best year overall for me in awhile.

Probably Dark Souls. Skyrim a very close second, might change my mind and Deus Ex comes real close too. Feel spoilt and a little overwhelmed having back to back fuck awesome RPGs. When I'm done with Skyrim I'm going to start with Deus Ex again then go through Dark Souls, I'll probably just end up grinding out my Skyrim character to 50 and maxing out skills, no point starting a new character unless it's worth going through the Empires questline as well. I find replays of Elder Scrolls games really hard though, they're always amazing the first time through but once the immersion of the setting and story have been removed because I've seen it all already I get bored because of the incredibly average gameplay.

The main thing I like about the bore is that everybody is an opinionated asshole and when it comes down to it everybody likes what they like anyway. I hate Dark Souls. But I get why other people love it. I love LA Noire. I get why most people on here hate it. No one really gives a shit which is the way it should be.

Damn I thought I was the only one!

Nup, I liked it too, even got all the DLC with the season pass. Good game if you play it with a guide and treat it like a movie.

I voted for Party Quest, to support borito indie games! However, based on total content to bug ratio, I have to say, "Achievement Unlocked (http://achievements.schrankmonster.de/Achievement.aspx?text=Shipped%20with%20more%20bugs%20than%20Bethesda)."

I never played any of the SR games, and I don't intend to.

MEET ME SOMEWHERE MOTHAFUCKAS!
Khan, if you have any love of GTA, you are doing yourself a disservice by avoiding Saints Row. Maybe you can skip SR1 at this point, but SR2 is streets-ahead of GTA IV in the gameplay department.

I never played any of the GTAs for more than a few hours. I actually never bought any of them past Vice City. However I will say that the SR is all about amplifying what I like about GTA in those few hours of play, so maybe I'll give it a try.

Is the demo good and indicative of the final product?

Plus isn't the "Run button" also the "Awesome button" in SR3? Where holding "Awesome" acts as a modifier for anything you do, so if you hold "Awesome" while moving, IT MEANS YOU ARE MOVING AWESOMELY!
