Title: What is your plan for next gen?
Post by: Himu on May 12, 2012, 04:40:33 AM: I'm sure most here have a plan on how they're going to precede with the next generation.

Handheld exclusive?
PC exclusive?
Console exclusive?
Going to be multi-platform?
Sticking with one system?

I'm going with pc as my main system next gen. If Japanese companies start bringing over their shit to pc, that'd be even better, but I'm going to have to get the new xbox for a entertainment box, XBLA, and the occasional Japanese console game. As far as handhelds go, 3ds is starting to look good, but iphone is still the show stopper and Vita looks dead, so it looks like it'd be best to wait that one out.

That's my only plan so far. I could just stick with my PC, MAME, and Xbox 360 for years, but I'll buy any console if it has games I want to play. I guess that hinges on Capcom starting to not suck, Platinum's continued survival, Valhalla actually releasing games, and Cave/Grev/AM2 making new arcade games that eventually get ported.

Yeah this. Laptop's pretty new here and I'm not getting anything at its launch esp. since all 3 started off this gen by selling broken consoles.

For instance, I was dead set against the Wii until Mario Galaxy came out. That is probably my game of the generation there.

That said, this upcoming generation, I will have the least amount of spare time ever in a console generation. It is hard for me to keep up and buying games just means that games will sit around for a while. Shit, I bought FFXIII-2 and Tales of Graces F and both are still in their shrink wrap. Granted, part of it is that I was still playing Warriors Orochi 3 but still, I have maybe 5-6 hours of prime gaming time a week. If work is slow, maybe double that amount. That isn't much.

Part of me is just tempted to stick with the monster $2500 PC I put together. Steam always has some awesome deal on a game I want to play and it manages to play every new release I want with max settings at full frame rates. It kind of seems like a waste for me to buy this expensive rig and then let it gather dust to play PS3.

I think this E3 will be pretty important to me in terms of what I want to do for gaming. The Wii U is going to shatter a lot of dreams Nintards have built in their head and I don't feel the slightest bit sympathetic for them. I'm sure we'll see the next PlayStation and Xbox or at least some kind of game announcements. I won't be swayed by Sony's bullshots that they are so well known for but I think you could suss out what the next generation of consoles can do.

Regarding handhelds, I have no interest. The Vita is almost flatlined and let's be honest, there is very little Sony can do to turn that around. The 3DS has a couple of titles I'm interested in but I don't really know when I'd have the time to play them. The Vita would be interesting if someone hacked into it, I think it could be a beast of a machine with the right media playback functions and emulators.

So there's my thoughts. Nobody probably cares but I think this generation is the first one I thought about sitting out. Whereas I just had to have a 360 so bad for this generation that I imported a Japanese 360 and played the games that had English text (which were quite a few in those days) and yes, I even waited in line (briefly) for a Wii + Mario Galaxy. I just don't have that enthusiasm this time around and I blame my 50-60 hour a week job plus my furthered education.

Well, read the TEXP's post. Some people's gaming habits and - more interestingly - tastes have changed over the years. While we don't know anything about the next batch of consoles aside from Wii U. I think that looking at the current crop of consoles and analyzing the good and bad, on top of your own personal gaming tastes, it's possible to have at least an idea of what direction you may head in or what currently interests you, but also what currently turns you off.

Buying all the consoles was a huge mistake. If we're including 3DS and Vita for next gen, then between those, PC, and iOS gaming I'm happy.

More excited for PS4/Duragno for raising the standard of games I'll play on PC. If both consoles build on what the PS3/360 offer, I'd be fine passing on them. Speaking too soon, obviously. I'll buy a Wii U for Nintendo games, just don't know when. Could be launch if there's a good reason and it's not too expensive.

The biggest difference for me in games is that no one platform is able to contain nearly everything I want to play like it was in some of the prior generations. It reminds me of how television expanded into so many cable networks. So I tend to hedge my bets on the platforms that fill the holes and needs I want the most. I love Nintendo games for example. But for me personally their platforms don't offer me enough to buy them just to get that fix.

I love MP games but I also still like single player games with the difference being for the most part I only buy the single player games that offer crazy length or the ones that have appropriate pricing relative to the content. So XBLA type stuff gets a huge boost. And the big mega games I still buy. But the middle class of games, I find I either don't have the interest, or am not willing to spend the money to play them, or even invest the time. I bought Dungeon Siege 3 on some crazy Amazon sale for a low price. I started playing it. But I realized the barrier isn't just the price. It's me spending my time on a mediocre game when I could instead be playing something else or doing something else. So I stopped. And I probably won't ever pick it up again. The vast majority of middle class games fall into this situation.

Just to have them I guess. Then when the games of my favorite series come out I'll buy those and maybe a few unique ones. I barely finish any of my games so I won't be buying much.

Zelda could make me buy a WiiU, but I'm hoping Zelda comes out late in the WiiU's life and I can just buy a backwards compatible WiiU2 instead and skip what's probably going to be another underpowered and hence ignored console.

PS4 is unlikely but not impossible. I'm not much for the controller shape so if they change it I'd be more interested.

My pipedream for next gen would be MS releasing a handheld that runs XBLA titles 1-1 with the main console.

I think the Windows phones plays some XBLA or the lower indie stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more of this rather than an actual handheld.
