I still need to play the first game
Rented FFXIII, played up to the FFXIII Zoo area and then had to return the game. Never felt the need to pick it back up. I can't believe there's gonna be three games in this universe and all the best FF have only really had one.
Do eet, mang. Game is much better than FF13.
To be fair, FFXII DID have a sequel!
I can't believe there's gonna be three games in this universe and all the best FF have only really had one.
gimme dat ffx remake/upscale insteadI'd be all up ons this, yeah. Why WHY are they making more FFXIII? 13-2 is already $20 on amaon. Did they lose a bunch of money on this shitfest and are desperate to make as much back on it as possible via retread cash-ins? Which don't really sell all that much? I don't understand.
I still need to play the first game
Skip XIII and go straight to XIII-2.

P.S. Welcome Rahxephon.
Welcum, Rahx! Thanks. I guess I can bring my FFXIII loving ways to the Bore now.
What gets me is that no one outside of SEJ knows what's going on with Versus. It's quite crazy how close Nomura is keeping the game to his chest.
Versus is never coming out - any concept that would have been done in Versus that was worth keeping was probably integrated into FFXIII-2, FF Type-0, and FFXIII-3 if it ever comes out.
The only reason why people got hyped up for that game is because it is a PS3 exclusive. It was the one to cling on to because it was the "real" FFXIII.
I played XIII-2 a few hours today and I'm enjoying it. Opening up the world, adding back in towns and NPCs, and giving the dungeons a little character really goes a long ways. There's still way too many cutscenes and way too much extraneous narration and dialogue, but there's not much you can do about that considering its a modern JRPG not made by Capcom or From Software. They really need a story editor whose sole job is tell the writers to cut stuff out. Really, with tighter writing and better characters, the story could be really great.
Please bring back the real cast. Fuck Mr. nice guy and MY SISTER IS MISSING derp.
And bring back the Crystarium.
no it wont; quit being so butthurt
FF7 and 8 were pretty mediocre, though.No, just 8.

Can be much longer if you aim for all the fragments.finally ordered ffxiii2 the other day while drunk. just came in. is it similar in length to the first one?
no it is shorter
Maybe I'm generalizing, but I got the impression that most of FFXIII's fans are people who don't play other RPG series. I'm still loyal enough to pick up pretty much any game even remotely related to Final Fantasy, but I've learned to keep my expectations low and wait for a sale.
Nothing comes close to Xenosaga's perfection.
Nothing comes close to Xenoblade's perfection.
It's just like the Zelda series they've become stuck in redoing what they think people expect out if it in many aspects, while not really doing any real good stuff outside of that.
Well looking back FF8 is emo shit too now, so I guess if I would play it now I wouldnt like it either.
But then again FF7 and 9 were pretty cool story wise.

Why not just take it literally. FF13-3 will be available exclusively for Windows XP (as the Crystal engine is heavily dependent on direct access to privileged registry keys, and besides nobody in Square Enix Japan has a Windows 7 PC available for testing) and star Lightning and Batman in a crossover with the Arkham series (didn't SE publish them in Japan?) as they fight Catwoman and Penguin in their new hideout on the moon. It will feature the return of the card games a la FF8/9, this time made central to the gameplay.
I don't. Lionheart wasnt impressive and neither was 8.
The closest thing to FF8 you will ever get from Square is FF8 port on the Apple Store.

Anyway, maybe their hints, and the hints it won't be called XIII-3, are suggesting it's some kind of action-adventure game (maybe a Batman Arkham wannabe!) where you play as Lightning (on Cocoon!), rather than another RPG sequel? That might actually be better, tbh. As long as they keep the same music composers (and resist the temptation to just recycle all the music from -1 and -2)
So this is basically Final Fantasy X-2 Shenmue: Majora's Mask. Himuro is never going to stop cumming.

Dirge of Lightning: Final Fantasy XIII
Junction these nuts to your chin, homo.
Square Enix has announced Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Set to arrive in 2013, Lightning Returns will incorporate “a brand-new story, world, characters and an enhanced gameplay system,” according to Square Enix. The game will feature Lightning as a solo playable character and allow her to freely roam a new world.
Other details regarding Lightning Returns are limited. We do know that the main story takes place hundreds of years after Final Fantasy XIII-2, set in a world called Novus Partus -- which is composed of four islands connected by monorail. The development team told IGN that three of the guiding pillars for the art direction in Lightning Returns are "gothic, mechanical and fantasy."
The most startling change to Lightning Returns comes in the form of the doomsday countdown. According to Square-Enix, the world will end after 13 days, and a massive clock will count down constantly in the corner of the screen to indicate this looming deadline. Any action players take, even taking the monorail from place to place, will spend time and hasten the end of days.
With Lightning as the only playable character, players will have unparalleled control over customizing her looks and combat style. The battle system itself, a greatly modified version of the previous two, will feature real-time elements including direct control of Lightning's movement and her attacks, as well as time-based moves that drain the doomsday counter. Lightning Returns will also include a real-time block system, designed to make battles much more active and time-based. Even dying mid-battle will activate a prompt to give players the choice to rewind their mistakes at the expense of the timer.
Lightning Returns was announced at today’s Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event, which Square Enix has been teasing since last month. In early July, Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama hinted at the project, which entered production at the beginning of August, followed shortly by a teaser site.
Square Enix confirmed that Lightning Returns will be the final chapter of Lightning’s saga, which began in Final Fantasy XIII back in 2010. [Niro's Note: I can't help but noticed they said final Lightning game, not final FFXIII game, so if you're looking for more you might still be in luck!] Lightning’s sister Serah was the focus of Final Fantasy XIII-2, which hit stores earlier this year and received downloadable content that continued Lightning’s story.

That's called being an adult. Nothing mysterious about it.
I wish FF would go back to pre-rendered backgrounds.
No need, man. The 3D is up to the old ones IMO. See: Palumpolum in FF13 and Academia in FF13-2. It really is.
In any case, the game sounds promising. It is a unique idea for Final Fantasy, but not an overall unique take on games like they advertised it to be. Still, it's really ballsy and this is the first bit of Final Fantasy news that has excited me in years.
Also, I like how you call me an FF fan when Final Fantasy is probably like, my 4th, maybe even 5th favorite jrpg series at this point in time.

I actually appreciate well done low-polygon graphics (like in FF4ds) - there's an art to it and a certain appeal to "doing more with less", much like low-res pixel art. A problem I did have with FF4DS is that the field graphics, while well done, felt cramped because of the limited field of view compared to the SNES version (and it had to resort to a map on the bottom screen to make up for it - overall, it feels less immersive to explore).
The next FF I will finish is FF: Dimensions :drool
A few new details on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII have surfaced from an interview in this week's Famitsu. Here are some of the key points:
■The game is currently 30% complete
■This will be Lightning's last game and will end with a happy ending. The game has just one ending.
■The first FFXIII was story driven, meaning that the story pulled the player along. FFXIII-2 was player driven, meaning players selected the story. Lightning Returns is World Driven, meaning players have to consider how they interact with the changing world.
■The game's in-game time works out to one day being the equivalent of one to two hours of real time. There will be increases and decreases in time.
■The game is meant to be played and cleared multiple times. The volume is not such that it will take many tens of hours to clear once.
■People from XIII-2 haven't died. Because of the effects of the chaos (I'm not sure if this is the proper English word), people have stopped aging and don't get old.
■The Novus world has four continents, two natural and two city-type.
■Depending on your actions, the remaining life of the world could decrease, and the game could end before the 13 day limit.
■There are some times when helping someone will decrease the life of the world.
■Defeating some enemies and clearing some quests will increase the life of the world.
■Lightning is all by herself in battle, allowing you to concentrate more than when you had to control a party.
■Lightning has become a considerably more refined person.
■You can freely move around during battle. Some elements of the battle system are timing-based.
■The battle system is close to action. There's an ATB gauge.
■During battle, you don't select menu commands. Instead, you select abilities which have been assigned to buttons.
■Hope will give guidance to Lightning via wireless com.
■The city has clocks everywhere showing the constant progression of time.

I read a transcript of the interview in Famitsu. I really like the direction they're going with the game.
They mention that the customization system in LR is actually a result of breaking down the basic concept of the Dress Spheres in FFX-2. Instead of having fixed jobs and costumes which players change between, what they want in LR is to allow the players to create their own jobs by putting together different equipment which into sets which then form Styles. Players can preset different Styles and change between them this way, but there is also much more freedom is customization.
Another element is the battles. For boss battles and tougher enemy types, they are planning to design them such that they feel like intense 1 on 1 battles, where Lightning takes the enemy down piece by piece, with multiple destructible body parts on the foe.
Sounds pretty good!

How did the last one sell?
Ring of Fates did well. Echoes of Time DS did okay but quite a lot lower than RoF, Echoes of Time Wii was a disaster. The "My Life As a" games did quite well. Crystal Bearers was, well, you know.
The real issue isn't sales, I think. It's that Crystal Chronicles is very very much the baby of Akitoshi Kawazu. His star has faded a bit in Square over the last couple years (mostly due to Crystal Bearers and EoT Wii, but also due to some fallout from The Last Remnant), which means he can't quite brute force through as many projects as he did before. Additionally, his wife gave birth in March of this year, so he's probably working a more relaxed schedule for now. He is very interested in mobile development, and so is SE, and what with SaGa getting revived as a social mobile game, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before CC comes back up. There's already been a port/remake of My Life as a King.
On topic: I loved Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube. So damn awesome game, a fresh take on the FF mechanics.
Diunx admits hes a gringo though. Borys seems to be acting high and mighty...
I never bought that Lightning DLC for XIII-2, is it worth it?No. It's like 5 mins of cutscenes wrapped around a shitty fight you are supposed to do multiple times.

Famitsu this week has new details on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
Here’s the bullet summary:
Lightning’s new costume is designed by Tetsuya Nomura.
You’ll be able to change Lightning’s costume and costume color during the game.
Time is always flowing, except for when your menu is open on the field.
Every NPC’s whereabouts and actions will constantly change.
Certain information can only be obtained at specific times.
Lightning is the only playable character.
Lightning uses “Styles” in battle. Each Style consists of a certain weapon, shield, accessories, and abilities.
You can customize Lightning’s appearance and ability considerably.
By defeating monsters, Lightning can earn points to increase her available time, and items to strengthen her equipment.
The battle system name has not yet been determined. Right now, they’re calling it the “Amazing ATB” battle system. Rest assured, it’s tentative.
Though you’re only controlling one character, it feels as if you’re fighting with multiple, according to the mag.
Monsters appear even in the city.
Black haze will appear in specific areas at certain times. The new area will become monster territory.
Half of the game’s monsters are new.
The game’s conclusion can be experienced straight from the package. (No download content will need to be purchased, unlike Final Fantasy XIII-2.)
Kitase guarantees you’ll be satisfied by the outcome of previous games’ characters’ stories.
We’ll be back later with more magazine leaks.
Monsters appear even in the city.well this sucks

all this info looks like shit you could guess from the trailer. looks like they put ff13 combat into an assassins creed game
Game can be "cleared" in 2-4 days according to some japanese website. That's bad :(
EDIT: in-game days not real life days. 1 in-game day is like 4 realtime hours so still very shitty.
20 hours and amazing gameplay with a shitload of substance would be exciting.Yeah people say this a lot, but I thought pretty much after you get to Pulse the game goes downhill. Sure having a more open world is nice, but Pulse sucks and there's nothing really interesting on it. The Tower and Fang and Van's home being about the only cool places. I also thought the battle system was a bit more fun with just two people, since you had to do more to kill enemies faster.
20 hours and FFXIII style is only good b/c it doesn't overstay its welcome. Unless it's XIII-I and it's just starting at 20 hours in and you only keep going b/c you were waiting 50 years for it to come out and you never got any info on it or saw anything about it until people started streaming the Japanese version. And you watched those streams and you thought to yourself "hmm, they seem to be walking down hallways quite a bit" and you reassure yourself that you're just catching the hallway parts. But no, after 20 hours, you realize IT'S ALL FUCKING HALLWAYS and just when you think you can't take it anymore, you get a field to run around in and the full battle system. :maf
You can tell this was designed by the Kingdom Hearts team. All you see are square platforms to hop around on.
This "one person" battle system is probably a testing ground for KH3.
