A top loading console in the year of our lord 2012 is impossibly cheap. I hope it's real. I hope instead of LEDs, you flick a switch and a green sticker tells you it's on.
I modded my fat ps2 to a top loader so I could import games (read: Fist of the North Star fightan)

Man, Sony must be really desperate if they hired the designers of the PolyStation.
I just noticed there still isn't a USB port in the back...There are two in front; what's the problem?

Could still be cool if the size is noticeably smaller and the price is cheaper.
It seems to be noticeably smaller:

PS3-4000, the latest, slimmest version of Sony’s current console, will not be announced at the main Sony gamescom press conference on August 14, VG247 has been told.
A gamescom reveal had been planned, but stock levels of the current build are said to be too high for Sony to move onto what is probably the last take on PS3 before PlayStation 4 is announced next year.
In addition, a source today said that the rumoured 16Gb version of PS3-4000 is in fact real, and is based on Flash memory. There was some confusion surrounding the figure, which originated from Anatel, the Brazilian Agency of Telecommunications, with many assuming it was intended to read 160Gb.
The new model will stack up against Microsoft’s 4Gb Flash-based Xbox 360. As the 16Gb PS3-4000 will have a flip-lid disc input and low-capacity storage, we’ve been told today that the announcement “may” be accompanied by a huge price cut, with the entry version potentially dropping as low as £99. Specifics are yet to be ironed out, though.
In addition to the 16Gb version, 250GB and 500GB options have been rumoured.
That has to be a typo, there's no way the PS3 could have any degree of usability with 16gb.

Maybe they meant RAM and this is really the PS4.
I mean PS3-4000? Come on.
Send this to Jeff Rigby so he put together the clues for us!Send it to Cathy Rigby so she can do a gymnastics routine for us.

$99 PS3 would be insanity. Package it with the Vita for $299 for ultra loss!

i think you are too used to Nintendo's parlour trick "new console" shenanigans. ;)

Both for $299? I'd jump in.$99 PS3 would be insanity. Package it with the Vita for $299 for ultra loss!
Fixed.
I was toying with the idea of popping an SSD in my PS3 until I read a Eurogamer article where they tested it and they didn't do shit in regards to performance.SONEY ENJINERING

Still rocking the 60GB original fatty! All I ever use the PS3 for is watch Japanese food documentary TV shows recorded with Torune!
My PS3 wireless speeds have traditionally been utter crap, but I'd attributed that to Sony's network, not my local network speed. Is that a bad assumption?

I don't get the connection between an SSD and wireless vs. wired network speeds. Please provide me with a clue.
can you install and run ps3 games from a flash drive like you can on 360?No.
I had no idea you can install to flash on 360. Got my hopes up but I just read it's slower than disc. :(
Would have been nice for Skyrim - my old noisy harddrive starts grinding away when I have something equipped like a torch.
The heavily rumoured super slim PlayStation 3 has been advertised ahead of its expected Tokyo Game Show reveal this week.
Polish website Polygamia.pl (via TheSixthAxis) reported on a picture found in a promotional newsletter for Polish electronics store chain Media Expert teasing a new PS3 model alongside a 28th September date. Sony's TGS press conference begins at 5am UK time on Wednesday 26th September. The new console may release on the Friday, 28th September, then.
Notes provided to retailers suggest two models: 12GB and 500GB. The 12GB model will cost €199 (around £160). The 500GB model will cost €299 (around £240).
Images of the machine depict a black device labelled as a PS3, but with a ridged texture and what looks like a sliding top panel. Word on the grapevine is it looks like a toaster. Yum.
I hope it really has 12GB and the sliding top panel, just for the lulz.
i never realized so many people gave a shit what their consoles look like, i guess i am just not that into the aesthetics of electronicsI'd like all my consoles to be matte black with no distinguishing features. The less noticeable they are, the better.

Seems likely.
Lol it must be some kind of in joke at Sony to launch with a ton of features and good hardware, and then slowly strip it back over time.
12GB would make it impossible to play more than one game at once. The install space required for some games is +4GB and quite a bit of the PS3's HDD is taken up by OS stuff.
I also don't think you could download games because you need 2x the size of the game free -- the game downloads (7gb) then decompresses (another 7gb) and then deletes the installer.
