i still would lean toward the nexus 7, which is probably why amazon is being so aggressive with the pricing

All I wanted was a cheap pdf reader so the 8.9" Kindle Fire would have been perfect.

Also this is why I never by technology things.  regret always.

I still have the wifi Kindle Keyboard, but I'm fine with it.

I can't choose between the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD though. And then there's the sexy Surface tablet right around the corner...

Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: MyNameIsMethodis on September 06, 2012, 05:26:02 PM
the idea of it was getting tablets into the average consumers hands, not for it to be exceptionally good at anything. sucks but they did succeed.

Agreed, Mups. That's why I'm asking all these questions. Kindle Fire sucks. What does HD have anything to fix its previous issues?

as beezy already said, the original kindle fire didn't have ads. there was also the choice to buy an ad-less kindle e-reader. there's no choice now.

i figure we won't know if the OS experience is any better until reviews start coming out

hahaha, what complete bullshit, and i own a nexus 7 myself

-hdmi out
-dual stereo speakers
- 16GB for $199, 32 for $249
- dual band wifi

and if you want to spend $50 more, you get a 8.9" 1920x1200 screen

you let me know when your nexus 7 transforms into any of that, i'll be sure to check mine

It's not anything past 3.0, I can probably assure you.

If it's upgraded to 2.3 from the OG Fire's 2.2, I'd be surprised.

For real real.  As long as the OS is still a slow and buggy piece of shit then I've no need for it.  I hate having to restart my Kindle Fire because after an hour or so the web browser stops working randomly.  Fuck you.  Get a better screen for reading or get a real OS made for the damn thing.

I am kind of feeling like I want one.

I would buy the $119 Wifi Kindle Paperwhite or the Kindle Fire. I like the idea of renting books for free since I already have amazon prime.

I am just worried that I'm overkilling on devices. I already have an iPad 32G Data plan. siiigh

Paperwhite for me RIGHT FUCKING NOW, I think.

Tempted by the 7' Fire ('cause my daughter would love a smaller iPad - she's pretty much taken over my iPad 1) but no need to move on that before I see what Apple has in that range.

bit annoyed at the lack of buttons on the Paperwhite though - i do enough swiping as it is.

Agreed. I WISH IT HAD BUTTONS. :(

Just for pages, mang. Your Paperwhite line is obviously for the hardcore readers, so give 'em what they want! You Fire can be the Magical Touch Free device.

I ordered my Paperwhite WITHOUT SPECIAL OFFERS because I am worth $20, dammit!
Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: Himu on September 06, 2012, 07:10:45 PM
To be honest, I have the kindle touch, and it's fine. You forget the need for buttons within five minutes. The only issue is when you have it in your pocket, accidentally unlock it and pages start turning or starts to zoom in.
Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: Cormacaroni on September 06, 2012, 07:22:33 PM
Couple the lack of button(s) with the faster CPU and hence faster page turns, and I bet you'll regularly be turning 2-3 pages unintentionally. I do this with comics on the iPad about a million times a day

Title: Re: TABLET WARS

Discrete page turn on swipe is a poor use of sliding gestures anyway - they only really feel good when there's 1:1 direct manipulation.
Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: Beezy on September 06, 2012, 08:13:49 PM
You don't need to swipe to turn the page on the Kindle Touch though. Just tap the edge of the screen.
Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: Cormacaroni on September 06, 2012, 08:46:22 PM
Same with comixology etc on iPad but I still end up flipping too many pages all the time. It's by NO MEANS a deal-breaker, to be clear...I've ordered it already. I'd just prefer physical buttons

I'm still going to wait to see how the Microsoft Surface Pro turns out.  Knowing Microsoft, it could be either amazing or total shite.  I know Microsoft really wants Windows 8 to take off as a competent tablet OS so I'm optimistic.

e-ink reader != tablet

I mean, wait on the Surface before you buy the Kindle Fire

but the e-ink readers are a totally different ballgame
Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on September 06, 2012, 10:39:20 PM
To me 7" tablets and something like Surface Pro are different ballgames anyway ... the latter is more like a small laptop which can be used like a tablet. I'd like one of both really, but not sure about N7 vs. Kindle Fire vs. rumored iPad mini
Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: Eel O'Brian on September 06, 2012, 10:56:58 PM
8.9" and $299 is a great "sweet spot" size and price for a pure consumption device.  As I said earlier, those $159 Fires are gonna fly off the shelves (even though an extra $40 will get you a much better tablet). That's "I'm not gonna cry/rage if my kid breaks it" toy-territory.

Very interested in the Windows tablet, looks like something I could get some real work done on - the iPad and N7 are great, but I'm a little tired of all the bullshit workaround stuff I have to do just to get some word processing/formatting done . The actual Office suite will be a breath of fresh air there, and I am really intrigued by that cover/keyboard.
Title: Re: TABLET WARS
Post by: Cormacaroni on September 07, 2012, 12:49:55 AM
The real deal-breaker for non-US folks is that even though I buy a ton of books and shit from amazon.com, all the movies and tv and book lending goodness is locked out unless I have a US credit card. I'd happily pay for Prime in the US to get all that stuff, and it would likely be enough to get me to start over buying stuff in the Android realm even after years of investing in iOS apps and content. But no point bitching - these things are loss-leaders designed to get you buying other stuff. If you can't buy the other stuff, they don't want you buying the h/w
