While I hate the idea that the only way to enjoy games is to become insane about it- I also hate the idea that the only way to ease up on games is by rejecting the notion entirely and show contempt towards anyone involved in the hobby.
People need to just fuckin show common sense about their interests- and shut up about them in company that doesn't give a shit.
The obviously dumb part is his "standard answer" conveys the shame that led him to craft this theory of identity about reality and eternal love and all this other shit rather than saying something like "I find them fun to play" and if necessary add something like "because I like puzzles/playing as a cool ass dude doing cool ass stuff/filling bars/driving European semi-trucks/winning/etc." Hell even something along the lines of "I enjoy the stories/being the main character" also illustrates the commonality of the reasoning to "normal" stuff. You don't need a grand romantic theory about why you like to play poker or watch movies or sexually violate wildlife to explain why you like to do it. Especially at this point where people who have played a game is no longer a small niche subset of the population.(http://i.imgur.com/a6okVXc.gif)
It's like all the shit about gaming and art. VALIDATE MY INTERESTS AS WORTHWHILE AND MEANINGFUL. "Having fun" doesn't count as a justification because they want "it" to mean more. And by "it" they're probably really talking about themselves.
The manufactured "gaming culture" crap isn't really any different than any other sub culture. People just want to marinate in that tribal society and exercise the faux-power within it which is probably why they spend so much time trying to decide who is and isn't a "gamer", fighting among their internal factions and seeking out a new purge.
Some people probably love it when games get pointed to after school shootings and stuff because it shows games, and thus by proxy they as "gamers", have some kind of cultural power. See: that CAD "don't fuck with us gamers" strip.

This video is hilariously sad. I have a girlfriend. She is stacked in the tits and has a beautifully heart shaped ass (and her hole is spectacular). And we're in love.
I'm a gamer. I make time for the things I love. Two months later:
Was it really that bad? It's sad but not worse than any other hobby obsession.
There are plenty of kids who practice and play basketball more than 5 hrs a day like the're gonna be in the NBA. Most of them won't even be good enough for junior college ball. All they'll get for their troubles are shitty grades, low paying jobs and arthritis. Their futures selves are basically sitting on the sidelines, waiting for another game against quicker youngsters, after getting off work at Walmart.
You guys cruelly ridiculing this probably have hobbies you feel the same way about - analytic combinatorics in my case for example
Sports fans are still worse
Because as sad as gamers get, and as much feels as they catch over games, you dont see them crying with their bros cause a nintendo game flopped.Sports fans are still worse
How so?
Because as sad as gamers get, and as much feels as they catch over games, you dont see them crying with their bros cause a nintendo game flopped.
This is also trueBecause as sad as gamers get, and as much feels as they catch over games, you dont see them crying with their bros cause a nintendo game flopped.
its hard to see people do much of anything when theyre rarely out in public.
reality isnt what people say it is, reality is what you want it to be
Hell is other people...and that is why...
I thought the GAF thread would be funnier, but that was the best I could find. Sorry. :(

No-one goes around shouting "I LOVE TV SHOWS" or "I LOVE MOVIES" or "I LOVE READING" -- there isn't any need to do so. It's this strident, puerile screaming that the rest of the world recognize their hobby which makes gamers so loathed and outcast. WHO CARES if someone else likes what you like? Just enjoy your stuff, and don't expect that the rest of the world is just going to enjoy having their face rubbed in it.

vapid pro-"reading" (in the abstract) sentiment isn't all that thin on the ground - "reading is sexy" T-shirts and such for example
Who isn't a gamer these days?
