Title: Saints Row IV

Quote
“Please meet the President of the United States of America.”
Ahh, that’s more like it.

It was a ruse, to make the incredible wackiness that was about to unfold seem all the more silly. You, as the President, have been kidnapped by aliens and trapped in a Matrix-like recreation of the city of Steelport.

It’s silly, naturally, and little more than an excuse for the most insane leap into crazy the series has yet to make. Saints Row 2 was a little madder than the first, The Third was quite a hike after that, this… this is just ridiculous.

:o

Quote
In our interview with Volition Inc’s Jim Boone, he said, rather bluntly, that this would be “the end” of Saints Row as we know it. As you might expect of a saga-ender the stakes have never been higher with an alien force running rampant and a plot-point that makes anything possible.

Quote
As well as being able to run faster, jump higher and punch harder, the player will also have other powers. Blast allows you to freeze enemies which can then be shattered, and telekinesis allows you to manipulate objects in the environment. Players will be encouraged to mix and match the powers also, for example, turning a car into a block of ice then throwing it at oncoming nuisances.

Fret not, guns are still very much a part of Saints Row IV, and we saw two new additions to the arsenal. First up was the inflate-o-ray, which could be seen in last week’s reveal trailer. This simply inflates enemies until they explode, no fuss but plenty of mess. The second new weapon is something I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to stop using…The dubstep gun. Fire it and a familiar wub wub will ring out, forcing the surrounding inhabitants of Steelport to dance whether they’re friend or foe. Cars too will begin bouncing to the music. The gun presumably does damage at some point, but I’ll put my hands up and admit that I didn’t notice due to laughing so much.

Quote
Players will now also be able to customise the look of all but their most exotic weapons. Special paint jobs or designs will be available through shops, the example of which we saw being a guitar case rocket launcher.

As far as pure wackiness and carnage goes, I haven't found anything that tops Burnout Revenge's crash mode. Too bad they never followed up on that. Some of the disasters you could cause in that game were glorious.

So as long as we're wishing for shit, what they need to do is pay for the Red Faction rights, and have the next game be a bridge between the two series. Saint's Row: Red Faction. Full-on Mars destruction like RF:Guerilla, only with Saint's Row wackiness.

OR

Partner up with Deep Silver for a Saint's Row/Dead Island crossover. You could be whodoin' voodooin' dead bitches with sword dildos

I really enjoyed Genki's presence in SR3, though I found a couple of the arenas a little difficult to navigate through. I mean, I couldn't tell where I was in relation to the exit. I know it's supposed to be a Lazer Tag style of battlefield, but there were insufficient landmarks to know how to progress, and that was annoying, whereas in Lazer Tag, there was always something to shoot at.

Yup.

All that's missing is a government agency to deem games that have been denied a rating harmful to children's development, which, depending on what list it ends up on, could mean a complete ban on sales and even confiscation of any existing stock.

Decapitation, dismemberment, rewarding brutality, rewarding greater brutality with more points, ragdolls, etc. Are all problematic, but not always, which is the usual ratings board :derp nonsense and completely mystifying to anyone from the outside looking in. Nazi iconography is another matter entirely, but again, ratings board bullshit and :derp as far as different media go, i.e. Indiana Jones can get away with swastikas, games can't, because they're seen as being intended for children, or as making light of the past, etc.

The extra voice option in the game is "Nolan North" instead of zombie (or in addition to?).  Troy Baker is still just "Male 1."

This isn't really a part of the Steam sale, but if you preorder SRIV on Steam and you already have SR3, you get an extra $5 off.  So, just to recap: Not only will you get the superior PC Master Race version, you'll get it for FIFTEEN DOLLARS LESS than the dirtperson console version.  Man.  It really is like you pay an idiot tax to be console only!

New Saints Row 4 demo.

I dunno, I've been a fan of Saints Row since 1 and I'm not feeling this game demo. It really does look like an expansion to 3, and as much as I like 3, this looks way too similar. It doesn't really look like it deserves the name of IV and watching footage I ask myself what the point of the game is because it looks the same exact thing as 3 but with new abilities. It could also be argued this is too over the top and Volition and are getting stupid with how the series is going but the fact the game takes place in an VR environment makes things better. I dunno, I just see a desperate attempt to be wacky and very samey game play of 3. It reeks of cash grab.

Doesn't stop me from getting it but at this point in time SRIV looks like child's play compared to GTAV to me and this seals SR4 as the game I get on launch and not open until Christmas.

Yeah I agree. I'm sure 4 will be a good game, but I actually won't be getting it anytime soon.

I just feel pretty satisfied by 3 and just not in the mood for another Saints Row and 4 just kind of looks like more of the same, just even more stupid and over the top. And well I feel like three was enough and it just feels like this is going too far.

And honestly 3 got kind of boring to play towards the end and while the humor was fun, I haven't been able to play Sr3 more than once.

And yeah GTAV comes out and well that will have it's own awesome brand of humor plus everything else I like about open world games.

It's just that SR4 and GTA5 are what, two weeks apart? Ain't no one got no time for that. :gurl

It probably helps I've only played SR3 once, which in comparison to SR2 is peanuts. I think my clock for SR2 exceeded 120 hours.
Title: Re: Saints Row IV: MEET THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Post by: Rahxephon91 on July 25, 2013, 10:57:08 PM
I also thought SR 2 was kind of better than 3. I mean three finally brings the series to really AAA(i guess) presentation. But I felt the middle of the game kind of was boring and it got a little too silly. I liked the corny over the top "gangsta" stuff of two. I liked the mission structure with having you go after the silly gang stereotype's individually all leading to a big end. And 3 while looking great and turly giving you tons of stuff for it's sandbox, moved away from that. Good game no doubt, but I think two was better.
Title: Re: Saints Row IV: MEET THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Post by: Himu on July 25, 2013, 11:12:17 PM
Agreed. The gangs in 3 are terribly underdeveloped. That one guy of the Morning star dies out of nowhere. You don't even get to kill him yourself! :wag Very  Un-Saints Row. 1 and 2 had a story for each gang and that went toward a big climax. You could also tackle them in any order and replay any mission you wanted. 3 is too linear and if you do a side mission that hasn't been introduced in the story? You missed a story mission. Very light on content.

And idolninja said that the tone of 4 is more akin to 2 than 3. So good news.

To be fair, that's only happened with IV. IV is unique in that it's the only GTA to ever disappoint me. I have zero reason to be cautious with GTAV after Chinatown and RDR.
Title: Re: Saints Row IV: MEET THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Post by: Bebpo on July 26, 2013, 02:13:32 PM
I'm cautiously siding with Himuro on this.  I loooooooved SR3.  But the DLC episodes were just "ok" and I'm always cautious when they take expansion packs and then the publisher says "DEVS TURN THIS INTO A FULL $60 GAME".  It's not like a game where they had this idea for a sequel and time and budget to realize their ideas.  This is a made by committee game that was rushed out to cash in on the popularity of SR3 in an attempt to get more money for THQ before they went belly up (but that happened anyways).

Can it still be great?  Sure.  But I'll take a wait and see approach and probably wait for a decent sale.

GTAV is a little iffy too because GTAIV was absolute trash.  But the trailer was impressive and the staff is completely different than GTAIV so it's like a fresh start for the series.  Plus the staff being mostly RDR team and RDR being the best sandbox game this generation gives it a lot of credit too.

HOLY FRAK! I had forgotten about Galactica 1980.

Those were in SR3 as well though, at least in one of the DLC packs, IIRC.

Except that GTA:Chinatown Wars was made by Rockstar Leeds, and RDR was San Diego.
Title: Re: Saints Row IV: MEET THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Post by: Himu on July 29, 2013, 01:32:44 AM
Sure, but didn't North have the San Diego guys to come and help develop GTAV? Could be wrong on that, and I don't remember where I read it, but even if you use that as an argument. TLAD and Gay Tony were so much better than GTAIV and were made by North, once again reinforcing that I highly doubt V will be a stinker like IV. TLAD and Gay Tony were greeeat.

So it feels like all the skepticism towards V feels half baked, that the people who keep trying to find any excuse to be skeptical towards a great looking game, and many of them haven't haven't played RDR, Chinatown Wars, MP3, or the Episodes from Liberty City to begin with. They complaining about GTAIV, a single game that came out in 2008, when Rockstar has released plenty of great games - within the GTAIV game itself even - since then. It's pretty hilarious.

I think that Rockstar North can mandate help from its studios in many ways, and that there is a great deal of distributed development. I even recall reading that the R* studios helped Team Bondi because LA Noire wasn't going to ship without the additional help.

However, my impression is that Rockstar North is the the big daddy which will ride in and pressgang staff into helping, but aren't really the type to request or even admit that they need help. Also, something-something-17-million-units-sold tends to make a developer think they did something right, even if you and I agree that GTA IV is the least enjoyable game in the series.

Weird, I know...!

TLAD and TBOGT were both much better than the vanilla GTA IV, I agree. RDR and MP3 have scads of multiplayer improvements to boot. I am hopeful that Rockstar North will incorporate all of that. In fact, I'll be stunned if they don't.

Well, he's not wrong, it was an expansion at one point. I do worry it's gonna be padded with a lot of filler to justify that full retail price. However, those Battlestar Galactica circa 1980 hoverbikes look awesome!
To be fair, that's only happened with IV. IV is unique in that it's the only GTA to ever disappoint me. I have zero reason to be cautious with GTAV after Chinatown and RDR.
Except that GTA:Chinatown Wars was made by Rockstar Leeds, and RDR was San Diego.

Well, what people have been saying down the grapevine for the last year or two is that GTAV is San Diego even if North is taking credit.  That's what has me interested.  If it's really North, all interest lost.

Well, San Diego hasn't been busy with anything recently (unless they haven't announced it yet) so I can believe it.

With The Mix on Saints Row: The Third, it was a great station, but there were a few tracks here and there where it's just like, 'I kinda remember that song, but not really.' We didn't want that. We wanted every time a song came on The Mix for the player to be like, 'No shit! No way! Yeah, that's my jam!'

Dude. I do not give a single fuck. I'm buying both games, I'm positive I'll enjoy both games. I am both an SR and GTA fan, and even in my doubts, I never claimed that the game would be bad or not awesome, it was only rant that SR4 looks like the same thing as SR3. You think you're rustling jimmies, when I'm going to get two great sandbox games two-three weeks away from each other. I don't give a single fuck.

You assume this is because I'm trying to start an SR vs GTA thing, and less because these are two sandbox games coming out three weeks away from each other. Over the course of three games, I have clocked an easy over 200 hours with the Saints Row franchise. They take up a lot of my time when they're released, and I play the shit out of them. I just don't want go from one sandbox to another one and risk burnout. Since I'll already have SR4, if GTAV ends up sucking, I'll already have it boxed away and ready to go.

I'd do the same thing if there were two jrgps coming out at the same time, and I have. When Monster Hunter came out I bought but didn't play Soul Hackers because I didn't want to risk NUMBERS burnout before SMT4 hit. That's how I roll: variety is very important to my gaming palette.

Review of customization options: there's not many new things to customize with in SR4 compared to 3 and it's still limited compared to 1 and 2. Overall, the lack of new personality poses was disappointing. I think there's like maybe 6 new ones total. Disappointing. On the flipside, there's A LOT of new hair options and shoes. There's a distinct lack of afro hair options beyond typical afros. I was hoping for

or

But c'est la vie, and what they have in there already is mostly great. I like the chiseled fro. Don't remember it in 3 but it looks great.

But the new POMPADOUR :rejoice is full on Janelle Monae. Last time in The Third, I stuck with the regular pomp and it's cool but it's not Janelle. But this new one! Omg! :rejoice

The new shoes are great! SHOES!

Clothes still mostly suck, and there's barely any new ones since the Third, but the new ones ARE pretty good but still too many hoodies. Good news is that one of the new Saints hoodies is great and I'll be rocking that sometime in my game.

how the fuck is this supposed to work? SR3 says there's an existing THQ ID i need to login with and won't let me use anything else. i clearly don't remember the password so whatevs... I got to saintsrow.com and request a password reset... i receive no email.

so i got to THQ website and try there and it says it doesnt recognize the username... what? then what is it referencing in SR3?

If you're lucky and get a booster pack no one else is selling you can usually make a few $$s on it as well. I sold an unopened Skulls of the Shogun one for about $4 during the sale. This week I got a Gratuitous Space Battles one which was going for about 70c unopened.

Title: Re: Saints Row IV: Download the inauguration station!

I think you can earn more drops in F2P games by spending money in them, but there's no point to idle for any other type once you have all the drops. You do have a chance to get booster packs though, but you don't need to be playing the game or even have it installed.
Boosters drop randomly as people in the community craft badges, so I assume the games that offer more popular rewards (like the weed leaf emote from Port Royale 3) will have more badge crafts and hence drop more booster packs. You only need to log-in to Steam regularly to be eligible for boosters, which you can sell un-opened. They all have three card as far as I know, and you can get a foil, so depending on the price of single cards it might be worth to open them rather than sell un-opened. Depends on the game.

You can see which of your games have cards by clicking on your profile and going to badges. That'll tell you what games you own that have badges (and thus cards) and how many drops you can get from each game. You can check the marketplace to see which cards are worth the most, but generally they'll run about 10-40 cents a piece. Except for Port Royale 3 cards that are worth over a $1 a piece because you can craft them into a weed emoticon.

Usually it's about 20-30 minutes per card. If you haven't had one drop in a hour, you should probably close the game and start it back up because sometimes they get borked.

There's no way I'm going to get to 45 dollars.

But I'm sure I can get to at least 10-15 and that's totally fine because I'm doing fuck all except leaving my games idle and walking away and taking care of business or browsing the web while it's in the background. So far I'm at 5 dollars. :rock

Valve are geniuses.

This is probably not something they intended, and will be fixed in the future.  The general rule is, "If it's too good to be true, it won't be for long."  So, enjoy it while you can!

I don't think this is something that will "go away". It sure is nice this one time, but after you get all your drops, that's it. Your library has a finite value with dropped cards, and if you compare that to the money you've spent to get those games in the first place, well... you can see how Valve is still winning here.

Not to mention the fact that they get a percentage of every transaction in the market.

What. The WHOLE POINT IN SR SERIES character progression is you start out with a moderate amount of health and upgrade yourself to become an ULTIMATE bad ass. Fireproof Boss! No fall damage Boss! Unlimited ammo Boss! What the FUCK.

While it is true that it sucks you cannot toggle abilities on and off the games have never been known for their challenge outside outside of side activities.

It works but I think it takes longer. It might even out, because you won't have to switch games every two hours or so. If you're not using the machine you're idling on you might as well do it this way and check your badges via the website from another machine to see who far along you are.

Ten hours in and I barely needed to touch the ground. My favourite way to get to a story mission-marker was to sprint to Steelport’s central island, bound up the tallest skyscraper while charging an upgraded tier three superjump, then leap off and glide toward my objective. Fifty storeys above it, I’d turn myself into a human missile through an upgradeable ability and slam to the ground with a powerful shockwave. Pedestrians and cars would careen away from my impact point, and I’d saunter the few feet to my destination in luminous pink high heels. It felt fucking glorious.

It’s fun. It’s sheer, unbridled, unrestricted fun. It’s a game that boldly lets you do everything you could ever want to, and can survive such freedoms. It’s a game that realises its own potential – that this is a form in which no limitations are necessary, in which conforming to expectations is pointless. Games have the ability to let us live out such mad, explosive, eccentric nonsense, and yet they almost never do. Saints Row IV does, and that makes it incredibly special. That it does it with such panache, such ease, and such ceaselessly entertaining humour, makes it simply one of the most fun games I’ve ever played.

i played this for an hour... the first batch of initial mission had some hilarious presentation

spoiler (click to show/hide)
the game begins with you taking out a bunch of stereotypical terrorist complete with turban and "death to capitalism" message, you gun a few of them and then they launch a nuclear missile which you stop by climbing on it while "i don't wanna miss a thing" by the aerosmith plays, after that you become the president and get to pick some moral choice like "curing cancer or eliminating world hunger" and where to punch the annoying journalist (punch the dickhead or punch the dick in the head?) after that the aliens attack and you stop them by climbing on a giant red and blue striped turret, but the alien attack succed anyway and they put you into a 60' sitcom, everything is nice and colorfull and you are forced to move around by dancing like an idiot, there is even a laughtrack! of course you escape the 60' reality and get put into the far more sadder reality of steelport
[close]

after that you run some filler mission which introduce the new superpowers,if you played any other superpower sandbox game like crackdown or prototype you already know what to expect as the control are pretty much identical, hidden around the city there are now bugs and powering your new superpower require you to spend them adding a collectable element

other than actual story mission there are now side mission which usualy involve doing and completing some side activities, doing them give you new weapon,so far i got a boring shotgun and...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
a gun which kidnaps people by beaming them up which sadly i still haven't tried
[close]

some side activities i have done include

- climbing towers using your new super jump power, pretty meh but at least as you climb you unlock checkpoint so if you fall down you don't have to climb the whole thing again
- races where you use your new super speed instead of driving around
- tank mayhem but you use a spiffy alien tank instead
- normal mayhem is still there too... one round of mayhem used a new weapon
spoiler (click to show/hide)
a black hole generator,pretty fun
[close]
- fraud insurance plays the same but since you can now run at super speed, you can smash really hard into cars without the need for adrenaline which overall make it's easier and less annoying

what else... there is very little reason to drive around a car since a lot of the bug are usualy hidden on top of building so you just go hopping around and picking them up... i guess they realized this too so they added the ability to listen to the radio even when you are on foot... you can also now summon and enter any vehicle you have used in a jiff... that also includes the tank from the tank mayhem activity which makes any normal encounter a joke

the only encounter that gives any sort of challenge are the big aliens, these can only be defeated by destroying their barrier with your magic power, will instantly destroy any vehicle your board and have the annoying ability of farting explosive bullet and jumping around

I forgot the password. I can't password restore account B. I can't change my Steam ID to be associated with account A (which I CAN recover and am now logged into)

at the very least I've lost the hour I put into creating my character in the Inauguration Station :( I'm just hoping this won't block me from fucking logging into the game tomorrow. if so I will be PISSED.

this must be how chronovore feels when he plays an iNis game

the good news is, since SR makes it easy to modify your character at any time, I can spend like 5 minutes tomorrow throwing to someone together vaguely correct with the right VO and polish them up later

I have to admit the superpowers seem more awesome in a city I've already "lived in" as a "normal." Especially instead of taking all the stupid winding roads I'm picking up speed and jumping over top of like three blocks.

The occasional little "simulation effect" on the textures of like buildings and stuff is a nice touch. Either that or a bug.  :lol

there is a platform on the bottom which is pretty easy to notice because it's inside a sort of crater, jump on it and press triangle/whatever button on the 360 controller... of course it doesn't work if you still haven't activated any checkpoint on the tower

I think I just figured out my problem- my 360 account was still linked and seemed to be conflicting with my Steam account.  Saintsrow.com was only displaying my old 360 characters from The Third.  It wouldn't let me unlink the 360 account until I deleted all the 360 characters first.  After I did that, I was able to unlock my 360 account...and my PC The Third characters and the character I uploaded with the Initiation Station just popped up on the website.

You have to log in to saintsrow.com, look up your character list, and then add those characters to your "queue." Only then will they be available in-game. Yeah, it's kinda nonsensical.

you need to upload your character at an Image By Design in SR3 then add it to a queue on saintsrow.com then you'll be able to download the character in SR4 (either at the start or later in the before mentioned store)

Character Gallery

upload option in there

then go to saintsrow.com and sign in with your account. go to My Steelport at the top
then Characters
then click the + under the "Queue+" column

then in SR4 there's an option to download characters at the beginning all the way to the right.
Or go the IBD store and do what i said earlier and download your character.

89% in 15 hours. Jesus Christ, I'm glad I decided to hold off. It's funny how their roles reversed. At the start of all of this Saints Row franchise had more content than GTA. Now, after 4 games, Saints Row has less content than its original game and sequel, Saints Row 2. Meanwhile, GTAV seems to have the content of pre-GTAIV GTA titles and even beyond that due to the inclusion of GTA Onlnie. Pretty cute and hilarious. Glad I didn't support now. Even at 35 dollars, you aren't getting your moneys worth. Going by FatalT's clock, the game is worth 20 dollars. By comparison, I've played well over 100 hours of Saints Row 2, and I still haven't gotten 100%.

Volition should have held off and waited to move the Saints to the next generation.

My suspicions were correct: Saints Row IV is a glorified expansion that deserves cash-in status.

yeah but you can't change stations or do anything with the music once you're on foot right? it just sort of carries on from when you were in a car for awhile...

Himu, it's silly to put the game down like that without playing it.  With all the superpower stuff, the game feels totally different than GTA would and now feels different to me than SR3 did too.  There's a lot more to the powers than it just being what was in the SR3 DLC.

I've played for almost eight hours now and am around 16%, I think. I've finished all of Keith and CID's side-missions and just rescued the first trapped Saint.  I'm not rushing through anything but am also not having that hard a time beating stuff, either.  So I have no idea how the hell FatalT got that much completion in that amount of time- unless suddenly everything is about to start going super-quick.

And who gives a shit, really?  This game is so much fucking fun.  You're crazy to not be playing it right now if you liked SR2 and SR3 so much.  Insane.

Complaints:

-WTF is up with the sound effects?  So much stuff is so low.  I tried disabling the mic, but it makes no difference.
-The game has fucked up on me several times.  Twice when falling, my character has gotten stuck in the falling animation and I can hover around endlessly, unable to do anything.  And once it crashed right when I completed a mission.  Had to replay the last segment, but luckily it was just a Professor Genki M.O.M. session, so it was easy to zip right through.

I blew through it and haven't done that to a game in ages. I'm not sure I'd pay $60 for it after doing basically everything in such a short amount of time but it's definitely worth buying.

Loving all the Saint's Row 2 and 3 stuff that has been popping up.   :D

Was also pretty impressed by the Saint's Of Rage minigame- it's actually three levels long, with two boss fights, and there's cool moves in there including multiple dragon punches!  Guessing that that's not really sprite art, since my character actually appeared wearing the same clothes/hair style in "sprite" form as the 3D model.   :o

There's only 1 gun worth using in the game and that's the DUBSTEP gun. After you've leveled it up a bit it becomes ridiculously overpowered.

I also like using shotguns at close range.  But then again, I do that in pretty much every game with guns.  BOOM.  You're dead.

I wasn't initially impressed with the Dubstep gun, but I'll try upgrading it.  I initially sunk all of my cache into upgrades that got me more cache or xp- gotta min-max effectively, brehs.

I wasn't joking when I said Papers, Please,  Gone Home and Saints Row IV in the same week should make everyone ecstatic about the possibilities of gaming. It's easy to blame indie or AAA when the simpler truth is I don't like shitty games!

Finished. Grand Finale, ending, credits, secret ending ... all superb.

I was 69% complete, 19 hours. Have no idea how FatalT ran through it like that. Seems 30-40 hours for 100% which is fine by me.

WHAT A SHITTY, RUSHED EXPANSION PACK

Also, in CRUNCHEONY discussion earlier tonight, I brought up the fact that even though most of the game is played in a reused environment, the way you play the game makes it feel like a completely different city.  I hardly notice it's Steelport as I'm jumping from rooftop to rooftop, or flying around and shit.

played a lot and have been content to just go from roof top to roof top collecting nodes or whatever instead of doing missions.  Really like the hacking.  some of the puzzles are quite devious.

What's really gonna be fun is when GTAV comes out and is shitty.  She'll probably try to keep up a front for a while, then maybe a month in admit that it's not as good as she'd hoped.  Then, eventually she'll get around to playing SRIV when she should have been all over it like, well, Himu on some HRT.  And that's when the fun will really start, and we can start giving her metric fucktons of shit.

I just don't know if I can ever go back to a straight-faced cops-and-robbers sandbox crime drama after the way SR3 and SR4 played out. The story's one thing, but with the sheer amount of FUN that SR4 lavishes you with just in running and flying around the world, it'll be hard to go back to the under-steering cars and characters with visible limps of the Grand Theft Auto universe.

To say nothing of the fact that (at least in GTAIV, and I doubt it will be better in V) the gameplay was shittier in comparison.

I like Himu, but lord does she need to buy a BS detector.

In GTAV, you can invite your distinguished effete homies over to play tennis and badminton and have wine tasting, and I dunno go fox hunting too probably.

yeah the gameplay gta is built on is so fucking outdated; what are they gonna do, bring back cops/ambulance/taxi jobs? the lock-and-shoot gameplay is old as fuck too, good luck having epic gunfights with that. the thing is that the wackiness in sr3 let them get away with all kinds of fun shit like airstrikes and fists that'd launch people into space and gta would never even try to pull this off even tho they have that juvenile humor mixed in with the serious cutscenes. and now with sr4 they took all the fun stuff with 3 and put in some crackdown/infamous gameplay on steroids and launched their series into the stratosphere where gta could never hope to touch it with continuing on what theyve built the series around.

saints row is next next level and gta is still stuck in early 2000s

Your powers are cool, but none of them really have the OOMPH of a fully upgraded Dubstep Gun or the Blackhole Gun for taking out a few scattered targets quickly. Having to rely on your powers alone makes you feel gimped.

this sounds like a good installment to jump into this series with.  as yakuza is on a skip year, i think i will make this my xmas present game.

I would at least play SR3 first.

It's not really necessary to have played SR3 before playing SRIV.  You'll have more familiarity with the supporting cast, but it's not the end of the world or anything.

Plus, you can always go back and play it later.

Is there much dlc planned?

There's only two pieces mentioned in the Season Pass. Enter the Dominatrix and a DLC to be named later.

crashed on final mission.  lost all progress

grrrr.

on the other hand i did every single activity and cleared every target, so by the end the secondary missions would consist of me initiating quests and then completing the quest chain by talking to the quest giver.  no need to do the activities as they were already cleared

I don't know why you'd bother, though.

Me? Why I'd bother? I won't.

I came back with so many games from the USA (including SR IV!) that I cannot, in good conscience, purchase GTA V at launch. When it comes out, I will eagerly follow that thread, and probably moan aloud when GTA:O launches, and then pick it up in January or February.

This will be my first not-launch-day since GTA III. I bought all the PS2 games as they came out, and again on x360 for IV and its DLC, even though I felt pretty burned by getting the Special Edition sent to Japan for me.

I had it crash on me in a couple of instances too- several different race activities, and another random time or two

The most annoying one was when I was getting that tank all the way across town to Kinzie's warehouse.  It was my 2nd time trying to finish that part of the mission (timed out when I foolishly tried to drive the fucker instead of tk and run with it) and I was juuuuuust about to drive onto the marker with about 10 seconds left when the game fucking froze up on me.

24 hours, 84%

I got all the collectables (no achievement though, I'm assuming more audio logs will appear when another character is introduced), did all the activites, got all the power ups and upgrades. Cheevos indicate there are three missions left. I just finished the Kinzie Gambit.

Just got this as I was out of town for awhile.

This game runs like shit on my ATI card and I have a system more than capable of running it.  :yuck

Okay it turns out this was my fault or my computer's fault more precisely. In an unrelated issue I had to reformat my computer and reinstall everything from scratch.

After doing that and adding a few pieces of motherboard and processor related software I didn't have on the last time, I'm getting easily double the frames I was getting if not a little more. So it's running properly now.

Slowly playing my way through. Enjoying it. And I generally don't like open world superhero style games like Crackdown, Infamous, etc. I think the characters and universe pull me along more than those other games.

I don't like the hispanic lady voice actor for the main character. I much preferred the latino one in Saints Row 3. You'd be surprised at how much something like that matters. Also the sound design in general is a bit underwhelming. I kept checking my audio settings because the super power sound effects are so underwhelming and understated.

I don't know how the fuck I'm going to play GTA5 after this

I just popped SRIV in today, and this has been running through my mind the whole time.

Yeah, I know it is a different game, it became even more separated from GTA with these last two versions, but still... Both are open world action games.

If anything, SRIV is closer to Crackdown and PROTOTYPE than GTA. I find myself jump-gliding to every feasible location. Even traversing water is not-sucky, as it uses Crackdown's dolphin jump, and launches your Agent -- I mean "Boss" -- into the air smoothly.

So much to do... I am loving this.

It really is something to contrast GTA V with SR IV. GTA V is good, it's really the pinnacle of the series, perhaps save San Andreas -- but Saints Row IV has managed to redefine itself in its swan song. I can't wait to see what's next from Volition.

I've enjoyed what I've played so far of GTAV [maybe about 8-10 hours?], but it really lacks the soaring highs of SRIV, those transcendent moments that are among the best this generation has offered. The one real edge I'd give GTAV is in its detailed, fleshed out game world, which GTA has always been really good at and which SR really hasn't.

I was hoping that in IV they'd boost Steelport like they had Stillwater in 2. But I guess most of their work went to the mission specific levels, which I can't complain about* because it helped with the missions which is Saints Row's key advantage, however it's still a little disappointing.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
*Except for Ben King's. We're supposed to be in Stillwater, why the fuck does it say Steelport Dry Cleaner on that fucking store and Steelport Video on another and every building is a clone of those all over Steelport? Should've imported part of the old map somehow.

Also, Volition has been pretty clear on how much of a change the SR3 engine was from the engine which SR1 and 2 shared. It is possible -- probable even -- that the pipeline for getting assets in the game is substantially different, and it wasn't worth flagging a few signs with Steelport/Stillwater settings to bother.

Plus, aliens.

Yeah, I assume they simply overlooked the signs or that nobody even thought about it. They did rebuild the church after all. I just got hyped up when I saw the mission name and put it off because I was so hoping. Especially with the work they had put into all the other non-Steelport parts.

THEN IMMERSION RUINED.

I'd been sort of playing and sort of not playing this because my gf loves SR so we started the game together and we're like "lets play this together when we hang at my place sometimes", but that's happened like twice because it logistically hasn't been working out.  So in the meantime I've been doing side activities, collecting clusters and just messing around while not advancing the story (still in TUTORIAL MISSIONS).  Well my gf was like "dude, just go ahead and play it" and so ok, I'm now good to play SRIV and I'm pretty stoked!  Now that I've gotten a few hundred clusters and upgraded my running/jumping a ton + weapons and other abilities, gameplay is pretty darn fun again like SR3 was after a while (I hate how weak your characters are at the start of these games).  The only thing so far I don't like is the side activities seem...worse than 3.  Like UFO mayhem is less fun than just running around with infinite rocket launcher mayhem and that assassination thing where you chase and kill the "?" icon which has grindy HP is kind of zzz.  But I like things like climbing the tower.

The game does give a pretty good crackdown vibe, but the jumping is really non-intuitive in this game.  Man, if someone mods the jumping to just work like a platformer where you simply hit the button and jump instantly, holding it down as you jump for bigger distances...controls would be perfect.  I like the glide though.  Reminds me of Super Mario World cape.

Not sure where I'm going here, just excited to finally start playing the game for reals because by the end of SR3 I loved the shit out of it.  Gonna play some tonight, hell yeah!

Played through 1/3rd of the game in one sitting lol

Definitely fun stuff.  When you have max speed/jumps you're just blowing through the city taking out activity after activity.  There's sooooooooooooooooooo many activities in this game jeez.  I've barely done any story.  Story missions are still like tutorials for the activities so far.  Seems kind of filler-ish game, but it's fun so can't complain.  Definitely has a COMPLETELY different feel from SR3.  I prefer SR3's more down-to-earth story with characters and plot and stuff; maybe IV will pick up in story/character development later on.

12 hours in and the game has become ridiculously addicting.  The progression is similar to Saints Row 3.  Didn't care for SR3 for the first 2-3 hours, and then couldn't put it down and by the end it was omg, so great!  SR4 was like that, the start is so unfun where your combat options are limited, your guns fire slow and every little grunt enemy takes hits to die and your screen is constantly flashing red telling you you're about to die and your scrambling for health.  Then 6 hours later you're diving into combat, blowing up 20 guys in one shot and you're basically invincible for the rest of the game and nothing can hurt you.  I understand they do that so that you can really feel the progression of becoming powerful, but it keeps making the game kind of sucky imo until you get strong because the core shoot shoot with a non-upgraded pistol/machine gun/ak combat is pretty weak.

Been blowing through all the side content.  There's sooooooooo many activities, jesus.  But I like how the game is basically a collection of 3-4 min mini-games made within the confines of SRIV's engine and abilities.  Most of them are fun enough for the couple of times you do them.  Plus I just love how quick the game is.  You dart around grabbing clusters and stopping and doing 2-3 min activity here, 2-3 min activity there.  Everything's at fast-forward speed and small-sized.  Perfect game for people with OCD or very little patience.  I'm like 95% world completion and about to hit 1100 clusters found and have most of the statutes destroyed and about half the text adventures...and I'm like 1/3rd into the story and level 40 :lol  probably 100% it in about 20 hours at this rate.   Don't really like going back and forth between story and side stuff so been running around getting all the side stuff done and then I'll speed run the rest of the story missions.  The game does a good job at making collecting stuff fun.  Definitely has a lot of crackdown flashback feels.

Played through the DLC.  I didn't time it but I'd say it took between 40 minutes to an hour to complete.  It was also insanely easy since my character's stats are almost maxed-out.

All five missions are pitched as "lost episodes."  The characters break the fourth wall and are telling a reporter about how things would have been, had ETD been released for Saint's Row 3.  So you get silly stuff like storyboards or even live video of a dude using props to fill in the missing cut scenes.  It also means that things go QUICK- you don't really need to travel anywhere...you just go in, shoot shit, rinse, repeat.  The game play is pretty ho-hum but the humor makes it worth it.  If you just judge the game play bits, it's pretty forgettable, actually.  They also remove some super powers or remove them entirely for these levels.

Regarding the story,
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I wish that the entire Enter The Dominatrix scenario had been finished and integrated into SR4.  It would have been awesome to take down all the aliens, only to return to the simulation and find that the Dominatrix has taken over and you're then reunited with more returning characters and are given new types of missions to complete.

And the ending is fucking crazy...even for Saint's Row.   :lol

It also seemed a bit choppier on Windows 8.1, but I guess I should have expected that.  Why did I upgrade?  I thought Steam was fucked until I realized that one of my USB ports now fucks up Steam when I start it with a 360 controller plugged in.  :'(

I really wish Volition would have offered some commentary throughout the dlc. Yes it was kind of funny how they broke the 4th wall. But If I'm not mistaken the way the devs made it seem was that this would breakdown on a deeper level. I guess it was too much to ask for a breakdown of the original dlc and have them do some commentary similar to Half Life 2.

Absolutely freaking loved the ending though.

Liked it a good deal.  Was kind of a nice swan song for the series and I imagine that if I'd played SR2 I would've gotten more out of it.  Seemed like a fanservice finale to SR2 & SR3.  The way it brought back all these SR2 characters and moments and did the same for SR3 (even revisiting the old Genki stage).  The super powers and combat were fun, the side activities were pretty enjoyable (although the really fun ones didn't have enough instances and the lame ones [most of the rifts] had too many instances), and the writing was generally pretty enjoyable throughout the main missions and loyalty missions.  All the nods to other games, movies, novels, pop culture were neat and Zinyak was a fun villain.

I kind of wish they kept the zany while still doing more genuine moments.  Like, probably my favorite part in the entire game, when you're on a mission where you actually have to DRIVE and your driving with Pierce (I think its his loyalty mission) and you're both singing in the car and talking about old times (and then later when Zinyak joins in the singing it's hilarous and funny and yet doesn't destroy the impact of the moment or quest), during that mission it felt like it mas more than just an arcade game where you blow stuff up with good controls in fun ways.  It felt like there was a world, with rich characters and story.

I think the downsides are that the main story is way too short (I finished main + all optional activities/loyalty quests + all 1250 clusters + 39 audio logs + 8 text adventures + like 40 challenges in 20 hours; I'm guessing the main story was like 5 hours long, maybe), there's not enough enemy variety so combat does get old even with all the powers, the city has zero personality and is just a map you fly over collecting things on and stopping at points, and there could've been some more character development.  Still, it's a very fun and solid game; left satisfied even if it wasn't an A+ epic and more like a B game of tasty popcorn.  It's like that fanservice sequel you never really needed in the first place, but why not, it's enjoyable.  Feels way more than any expansion has any right to be but feels short of a full price sequel.  It seems really somewhere halfway.  Hopefully SRV will be a reboot with a full dev cycle.

That said, I didn't try out any of the co-op stuff.  How are the co-op activities sprinkled around the map?

I think I'll wait until all the DLC packs are out and there's a sale and then do the expansions since they seem like they'll be similar to the SR3 expansions (60-90 mins, kind of eh).

Bebpo, should I play some SR3 before jumping into SR4 or it doesn't matter?

I bought all the content for SR3 but never got around to playing it.

It doesn't really matter, since only a few minor plot points and references carry over, but they're both incredibly fun games so there's no real reason not to just go ahead and play them both.

You should play SR3 because it's a great game.

And yeah, you'll get more out of the story if you've played SR3 and even more if you've played SR2 & SR3.

It's also interesting how from what I've heard SR2's boss and story while being silly was very fucked up R-rated adventure.  Then SR3's boss and story were pretty much a toned down PG-13 adventure.  And then SR4's boss and story is basically a family-friendly PG adventure (outside of a decap).  Gonna be weird when I finally get around to playing SR2 one of these days.

Also pretty amazing to see a story that went from SR1's GTA-wannabe to Mass Effect in the course of 4 games.  That's definitely impressive.

Wasn't SR2 kinda crap on PC?

I'll probably stick with 3.

Is SR3 main story about 20 hrs too?
Title: Re: Saints Row IV: Enter The Dominatrix

Probably less.  If you do everything (story + side activities), I think it was about 24 hours.  Maybe 12 hour story, 12 hour sidestuff breakdown.  SRIV has waaaaay more side activities and is probably like 5 hour story, 15 hour sidestuff.

And yeah, SR2 is crap on PC.  There's a huge overhaul mod that fixes a lot of the problems but performance is still pretty bad.  You can brute force it though with modern pcs.

Cool, I often become unmotivated to finish the main story of a sandbox game cuz it's too long and I completely forget about the story and characters

Yeah, as a fan of the series who even liked SR1, the transition from being a clear GTA-wannabe to having its own voice and style has been really inspiring.

I'd recommend at least playing SR3 before SR4; there are a number of good story beats which are kind of central to enjoying 4's story, such as it is. You'll end up asking yourself "why is this guy important?" and "is that funny for some reason?" and that would be SAD.

If you can get SR2 running, please do.

There are a number of ways SR2 was actually the pinnacle of the series, even if it isn't as seamless in its storytelling, gameplay, and UI. It is a much more content-rich game, with unique co-op gameplay and some Really Quite Difficult missions. I think I had 60-80 hours in SR2 single-player. Also some pretty good competitive multiplayer modes for its time, though those will probably be less impressive now, and entirely depopulated unless there is some Steam functionality for planning/arranging multiplayer sessions.

this game is amazing.  three specific things to call out (ending spoilers)

spoiler (click to show/hide)
1. Keith David works on like five or seven different levels.  His inclusion was already brilliant before the They Live bit with Roddy Piper.

2.  Ben King's Saints Row 1 nostalgia mission putting the camera behind your camera.

3.  Both endings are perfect for the sequel.  I'm partial towards Saints in Time.

wait, one more

4.  Saints of Rage is legit.

and

5.  The standing sized vents in Asha's mission.

6.  Matt Miller's romance option and Nyteblade fanfic loyalty mission.

I'm not sure; I'm going to get the season pass on Steam, hopefully it goes on sale this go-round.  Enter the Dominatrix is supposed to be "ok," but not sure if it's worth it if you're paying full price.

There's two and it sounds like they're meh just like the SR3 ones, as expected.  A few hours, a few missions, but I just don't think SR DLCs will ever be "great" because you're lacking the player progression upgrades and collectibles and stuff that fleshes out the game besides just the missions.  You're rolling around with a maxed characters and practically invincible if you're playing post-game and it's really just there to enjoy the story and the stories are short little side tales.

I'm still looking forward to playing both of them as I got them for like $3.75 total for the season pass last Steam sale.  Might play them this week over my xmas holiday.  But yeah, not expecting much.  I honestly don't expect much out of any DLC for any game that isn't set in a BRAND NEW LOCATION because otherwise DLCs tend to be just re-hashing assets/gameplay for an hour or two and never really get great.  Stuff like Minerva's Den where it's something completely new is the best DLC.

The first one is almost objectively average, the second one was a big improvement but never really appealed to me, haven't played enough of Third but when I tried it never grabbed my attention :yeshrug

Guess I like the Hulk: Ultimate Destruction like superpowers.
Yeah, OK, I could see that. If that's your thing, you should also give [PROTOTYPE] a go, as it's from Radical, the same dev as HULK: UD, and also of course you should also try Crackdown.

The first SR is visually unimpressive, sure. Gameplay-wise it basically doing its level-best to be GTA -- urban crime simulator with a lot of side-mission content. Then GTA IV came out and failed to include anything other than the main story to do. All the R3 Mission stuff, anything which didn't serve Niko's narrative as "foreigner with a dark past escaping to a new world in America!" was set aside. So SR2 took all that and did it even crazier, and put it in cooperative play.

SR3 really embraces its own strangeness, and there are superhero/virtual reality levels within it. But it is by-and-large a less robust version of SR2's co-op Activities, all put together as missions. Actually, it felt to me like most of the missions were story bookends slapped on to an unmodified Activity or playlist of Activities. At GDC, Volition devs stated that the transition to a new engine was significantly more work than they expected, so there ended up being quite a bit of corner-cutting, hence that style of gameplay, limited cutscenes and attendant lip-sync of user-editable characters, which is a nightmare in and of itself.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I tried to connect a few times as THQ died, and again after the launch of SR IV under Deep Silver, but was unable to connect with old files. I got close enough to my old look, but it's not the same.

Eh. You can always get a facelift later. The actual gameplay is fuck hot, which is all that matters. Unless of course you're himumu, and the whole point of a game is how much it can bore a sane person, then I guess in that universe this game sucks and GTAV is the tits or whatever.

It's not that I wanted to import my character over. It's that I wanted to pick a cool character somebody else had already gone to the trouble of creating on the website. That's what I did in Saint's Row 3.
