“Please meet the President of the United States of America.”
Ahh, that’s more like it.
It was a ruse, to make the incredible wackiness that was about to unfold seem all the more silly. You, as the President, have been kidnapped by aliens and trapped in a Matrix-like recreation of the city of Steelport.
It’s silly, naturally, and little more than an excuse for the most insane leap into crazy the series has yet to make. Saints Row 2 was a little madder than the first, The Third was quite a hike after that, this… this is just ridiculous.
In our interview with Volition Inc’s Jim Boone, he said, rather bluntly, that this would be “the end” of Saints Row as we know it. As you might expect of a saga-ender the stakes have never been higher with an alien force running rampant and a plot-point that makes anything possible.
As well as being able to run faster, jump higher and punch harder, the player will also have other powers. Blast allows you to freeze enemies which can then be shattered, and telekinesis allows you to manipulate objects in the environment. Players will be encouraged to mix and match the powers also, for example, turning a car into a block of ice then throwing it at oncoming nuisances.
Fret not, guns are still very much a part of Saints Row IV, and we saw two new additions to the arsenal. First up was the inflate-o-ray, which could be seen in last week’s reveal trailer. This simply inflates enemies until they explode, no fuss but plenty of mess. The second new weapon is something I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to stop using…The dubstep gun. Fire it and a familiar wub wub will ring out, forcing the surrounding inhabitants of Steelport to dance whether they’re friend or foe. Cars too will begin bouncing to the music. The gun presumably does damage at some point, but I’ll put my hands up and admit that I didn’t notice due to laughing so much.
Players will now also be able to customise the look of all but their most exotic weapons. Special paint jobs or designs will be available through shops, the example of which we saw being a guitar case rocket launcher.

Hmmm...it actually "only" costs $99. I was expecting at least $150 when I saw that. Kinda want....but I guess there's no PC version.
Why would anyone buy that? Just lots of plastic junk that clogs up the apartment...

Is that one of those trailers where it spoils the entire plot?
Super excited for possible Requiem for a Dream ass-to-ass tribute scene.
Does it feel a lot different than SR3 even though it's the same city?
How different is steel port. Is it like stilwater sr1 -> sr2
Seems like it. One of the mini games I played involved using your force powers to grab cars/people/Genki heads and throw them through special markers about 20 feet off the ground. You had to complete all of them in the allotted time to get gold.

This isn't really a part of the Steam sale, but if you preorder SRIV on Steam and you already have SR3, you get an extra $5 off. So, just to recap: Not only will you get the superior PC Master Race version, you'll get it for FIFTEEN DOLLARS LESS than the dirtperson console version. Man. It really is like you pay an idiot tax to be console only!

I dunno, I've been a fan of Saints Row since 1 and I'm not feeling this game demo. It really does look like an expansion to 3, and as much as I like 3, this looks way too similar. It doesn't really look like it deserves the name of IV and watching footage I ask myself what the point of the game is because it looks the same exact thing as 3 but with new abilities. It could also be argued this is too over the top and Volition and are getting stupid with how the series is going but the fact the game takes place in an VR environment makes things better. I dunno, I just see a desperate attempt to be wacky and very samey game play of 3. It reeks of cash grab.
Doesn't stop me from getting it but at this point in time SRIV looks like child's play compared to GTAV to me and this seals SR4 as the game I get on launch and not open until Christmas.

Footage of gameplay of the game makes it look unnecessary as a product. It's like, I could just boot up The Third and install this.

So Himu's being sperging out about Saints Row 4 for two months up until about a week ago, and now we're supposed to believe he suddenly doesn't really care anymore? Nope, not buying it.

I didn't mind it a few months ago, true. But that was months ago when it was revealed. I kind of expect a better sense of marketing a mere month away from launch. It makes no sense they have done an absolutely terrible job to accentuate the differences between this and The Third, the ability to fly and use super powers aside.

They show off almost nothing new. 90% of the stuff in that video was in Saints Row 3. We're trying really hard to convince people that SR4 is more than just glorified DLC, and videos like this aren't helping.

Well, he's not wrong, it was an expansion at one point. I do worry it's gonna be padded with a lot of filler to justify that full retail price. However, those Battlestar Galactica circa 1980 hoverbikes look awesome!
To be fair, that's only happened with IV. IV is unique in that it's the only GTA to ever disappoint me. I have zero reason to be cautious with GTAV after Chinatown and RDR.Except that GTA:Chinatown Wars was made by Rockstar Leeds, and RDR was San Diego.
No PC tho :stahp

Listen, I'm going to butt up against an embargo a bit and tell you that, based on what I've played so far, Saints Row IV is a much better game than Saints Row III. I don't say that lightly, as Saints Row III is one of my favorite games basically ever.
A$AP Rocky - "Goldie"
With The Mix on Saints Row: The Third, it was a great station, but there were a few tracks here and there where it's just like, 'I kinda remember that song, but not really.' We didn't want that. We wanted every time a song came on The Mix for the player to be like, 'No shit! No way! Yeah, that's my jam!'
You're the one who is all "I'ma play GTA5 first cause they're making a bunch of unrealistic gameplay promises and not going into the fact that they're going to force feed a dumb story, and let SRIV sit on the backburner"

So, for the past week or so, I've been idling all my games to see see whether I can buy SRIV entirely with money generated from Steam trading cards. The results thus far:

Selling a lot of $0.20 cards, and getting lucky on a few foils.
Once you've got the max # of card drops for a game, there's no point in leaving it idling, right? Or can it still benefit you somehow?

Fuck, this is a great idea; I leave Steam on anyway at work to chat with people. What games are really good for this? Haven't paid attention to see what games give out the trading cards.
There's no way I'm going to get to 45 dollars.
But I'm sure I can get to at least 10-15 and that's totally fine because I'm doing fuck all except leaving my games idle and walking away and taking care of business or browsing the web while it's in the background. So far I'm at 5 dollars. :rock
Valve are geniuses.
I don't think this is something that will "go away". It sure is nice this one time, but after you get all your drops, that's it. Your library has a finite value with dropped cards, and if you compare that to the money you've spent to get those games in the first place, well... you can see how Valve is still winning here. There's no way I'm going to get to 45 dollars.

This is probably not something they intended, and will be fixed in the future. The general rule is, "If it's too good to be true, it won't be for long." So, enjoy it while you can!
Not to mention the fact that they get a percentage of every transaction in the market.
Does anyone know how long the pre-order bonus bullshit will be available on Steam? Like, how long do I have to maximize my card drop value, basically?

Ten hours in and I barely needed to touch the ground. My favourite way to get to a story mission-marker was to sprint to Steelport’s central island, bound up the tallest skyscraper while charging an upgraded tier three superjump, then leap off and glide toward my objective. Fifty storeys above it, I’d turn myself into a human missile through an upgradeable ability and slam to the ground with a powerful shockwave. Pedestrians and cars would careen away from my impact point, and I’d saunter the few feet to my destination in luminous pink high heels. It felt fucking glorious.
It’s fun. It’s sheer, unbridled, unrestricted fun. It’s a game that boldly lets you do everything you could ever want to, and can survive such freedoms. It’s a game that realises its own potential – that this is a form in which no limitations are necessary, in which conforming to expectations is pointless. Games have the ability to let us live out such mad, explosive, eccentric nonsense, and yet they almost never do. Saints Row IV does, and that makes it incredibly special. That it does it with such panache, such ease, and such ceaselessly entertaining humour, makes it simply one of the most fun games I’ve ever played.
Surprisingly, CheapyD was a little down on it in this week's CAGcast. He said the longer he played it the less he liked it, missions got too repetitive.

Three Way is horse shit, Pierce constantly falls down even with his health boosted and the checkpoints are few and far between.
The zombie mission before this sucked shit too.
I'm just gonna flush this one and wait for SR4 to be delivered.

Like other people, I couldn't import my IS character even though I signed into my SR account. So, fuck it. I just went with a basic male boss with a very few alterations, one of which was using the British accent, because I find it funny to make the idea of a gangster President even more outlandish by making him clearly British. I made a couple of characters with the IS, uploaded them to my SR account or whatever, and when I logged into SR4 last night and tried to download a character it told me I didn't have any after signing into my SR account. Not a huge issue but kind of annoying.

yeah but you can't change stations or do anything with the music once you're on foot right? it just sort of carries on from when you were in a car for awhile...
89% in 15 hours. Jesus Christ, I'm glad I decided to hold off. It's funny how their roles reversed. At the start of all of this Saints Row franchise had more content than GTA. Now, after 4 games, Saints Row has less content than its original game and sequel, Saints Row 2. Meanwhile, GTAV seems to have the content of pre-GTAIV GTA titles and even beyond that due to the inclusion of GTA Onlnie. Pretty cute and hilarious. Glad I didn't support now. Even at 35 dollars, you aren't getting your moneys worth. Going by FatalT's clock, the game is worth 20 dollars. By comparison, I've played well over 100 hours of Saints Row 2, and I still haven't gotten 100%.
Volition should have held off and waited to move the Saints to the next generation.

Just finished it at 11.5h (I rush storyline on my first playthroughs... I'm just so goddamn excited to see what happens!). I fucking LOVED this game. I look forward to going back and doing the side quests and extra stuff, but at my own leisure.

I'm having an issue in that while a lot of the new guns are really cool (thinking of ricochet and black hole guns in particular here) I just tend to like running around like a lunatic when I'm surrounded by a bunch of Zin and using the dash attacks, because they're COOLER.
The big upgrade makes the wubs EXPLODE.

If you didn't do the loyalty missions, you didn't get the real ending. :leon
I discovered an awesome way to break TK Mayhem. Instead of throwing the balls, just grab one and then sprint down the road with it held out in front of you. :lol
game crashed during the final mission so i have to redo it all :\
Finished. Grand Finale, ending, credits, secret ending ... all superb.
I was 69% complete, 19 hours. Have no idea how FatalT ran through it like that. Seems 30-40 hours for 100% which is fine by me.
played a lot and have been content to just go from roof top to roof top collecting nodes or whatever instead of doing missions. Really like the hacking. some of the puzzles are quite devious.
Yeah. It's weird because there's no joke to it. It's played completely straight.
Is it too early to nominate Himu bailing on the The Saints for Self-Annihilation of the Year?
Got gold medal on all the activities. As far as I can see, I've got all the super power upgrades but I didn't get the achievement. Unless there's secret ones for challenges.
For some fucking reason, The Mix is now gone, which sucks because that's my favorite radio station :fbm

if you beeline it on only story missions, probably:spoiler (click to show/hide)3 hours or so? that's at least the 2/3 point storywise[close]
that's skipping any unfinished loyalty, of course

you can remove stations from your lineup from the Music tab on your phone - look there and see if it needs to be re-enabled

Apparently I somehow did that, although I certainly don't remember doing so. :derp
I just wanna be a superhero to the tune of "Just a Friend" and "Unbelievable." I don't ask for much.
My writeup (http://www.thegia.com/2013/08/28/saints-row-iv-everything-is-permitted/) is up! Nominally about Saints Row IV, but mostly about designer intent vs. player freedom, genre canon wars and balancing ambition vs. execution.

That kinda reads like a 9.7 review.
@jimreilly: Deep Silver says Saints Row IV has sold through 1 million units in the first week.

Just got this as I was out of town for awhile.
This game runs like shit on my ATI card and I have a system more than capable of running it. :yuck

Man. I have to go to bed (work at 6 am) and I had to talk myself out of playing the game some more. Rescued all of my homies except one...
This game is so f'n awesome. Just a shit ton of fun to play, and also a big wet, sloppy kiss to the series and games in general. Too bad Himuro is a dumb fucker and is being all "I'm not going to play this for no discernible reason because I want to spend the 2 weeks before GTAV specifically not having fun with a better game"
Surprisingly, I did not enjoy super-powered fight club as much as I thought I would.
I don't know how the fuck I'm going to play GTA5 after this
You nailed it earlier in the thread.
Himumu just wants to give GTA V a fair shake on its own merits, and there's no way to do that in a post-Saints world.
this sounds like a good installment to jump into this series with. as yakuza is on a skip year, i think i will make this my xmas present game.
Is there much dlc planned?

There's only two pieces mentioned in the Season Pass. Enter the Dominatrix and a DLC to be named later.

It's not really necessary to have played SR3 before playing SRIV. You'll have more familiarity with the supporting cast, but it's not the end of the world or anything.
Plus, you can always go back and play it later.
I don't know why you'd bother, though.
when I foolishly tried to drive the fucker instead of tk and run with it
:fbm
That's how I did all of the TK mayhem challenges- just grabbed a ball, then ran around running over people and shit.
:rejoice this game

grrr:piss PC Dirt people :piss2
final mission keeps crashing out on me in various places
very frustrating

The only thing I don't like about SR4 is that most of the sidequests are "do these activities you were going to do anyway". There are a few great sidequests like thebut otherwise they're pretty meh.spoiler (click to show/hide)young and old Shaundi[close]
I fucking love having superpowers and flying around the city though.
Are powers unlocked just going through the story or by absorbing wardens that spawn?
I got 100% over the weekend, all activities, full map clear, and all collectibles including EVERY. SINGLE. CLUSTER.
When's the DLC??

Did you do all the challenges?
Then you didn't 100% the game :)
(neither did I)
Well that's a bummer. I mean, it sounds neat but the stripped down, cutting-room-floor content isn't appealing in the least.
Bebpo, should I play some SR3 before jumping into SR4 or it doesn't matter?
I bought all the content for SR3 but never got around to playing it.

As a thank you for your support of Saints Row IV, checkout this free outfit pack which should be construed in no way as an attempt to get back into your good graces following a prematurely-released game patch.
Wasn't SR2 kinda crap on PC?
I'll probably stick with 3.
Is SR3 main story about 20 hrs too?
this game is amazing. three specific things to call out (ending spoilers)spoiler (click to show/hide)4. Saints of Rage is legit.[close]

If you already own the Season Pass DO NOT purchase this content here as you will be charged again.
How the Saints Save Christmas (1953) - Santa is trapped inside the Simulation but the Scrooge-like Boss of the Third Street Saints can't muster enough Christmas spirit to save him. Can the Saints help the Boss discover the true meaning of the season in time? A holiday classic for the whole family.
What dlc expansions are out and are any worth getting? SR2 and 3 had weak dlc xpacks. So I'm leaning on 'skip' but I haven't seen them because SPOILERS.
I didn't even like the first 3
The first one is almost objectively average, the second one was a big improvement but never really appealed to me, haven't played enough of Third but when I tried it never grabbed my attention :yeshrugYeah, OK, I could see that. If that's your thing, you should also give [PROTOTYPE] a go, as it's from Radical, the same dev as HULK: UD, and also of course you should also try Crackdown.
Guess I like the Hulk: Ultimate Destruction like superpowers.
I found a good deal on the PC version but the official import site doesn't work anymore so I can't bring over characters from the website.
