Getting past this and moving forward was the best plan, especially since we have some PSOne RPGs coming to PSN before too long.

Quote from: vireland;56208236
Let's not get THOSE rumors started.  It is, alas, not the LUNARs, but these upcoming are not disappointing additions to PSN in the least.  Should go up around E3ish, if all goes well.

I spent like 4 hours getting a PSX emulator running on Saturday. I am a bit anal about settings but I eventually got it super-perfect.

am now playing Japanese Symphony of the Night (for the first time!) may try Japanese Alundra next. no Working Designs balancing~

I played some bushido blade with a friend this past weekend.  I'll pay a ridiculous amount for a XBLA/PSN/Steam version with online play--$20.  Don't upgrade the graphics or anything.

Normally I'd be all "Landstalker >>>>>>>>>>>>> Alundra," but I never did get to play the real game without the stink of Working Designs all over it.

Anyway, PS1 was awesome.  First system I owned where I was able to literally buy every single game I ever wanted for it.  I just need to get rid of some crap (Working Delays games and another RPG or too) and it will be perfect.

yeah, I was jonesing for a Metroidvania and realized it's been like 6+ years since I last played SotN. So why not the original! I have the Xbox 360 HORI pad which is pretty god-like for emu (best of 360 + decent D-pad)

Not my favorite system, but definitely the most interesting, so I'm collecting it.  PS1 occupies a pretty unique place in gaming history as a transitional system.   Even the kusoge is interesting.  I think the gap in graphical quality got smaller with PS2 + PS3, but PS1 games are all over the map since devs were experimenting.

It might become my fave though.  I've been playing games I didn't play as a kid and they're really good.  So many really weird games that are awesome, like Power Shovel.

The "sister" thread to this one on GAF is pretty fun to read through.  Brought lots of games I never knew about to my attention.

Imma post my collection when I get a chance.

The Playstation is what started me on import games, too- before I couldn't fathom paying the insane prices for Super Famicom games.  But finding out that Street Fighter Zero was coming out in December '95 got me to pay like $90 for it.  I even got two other imports (that Konami Live Power Pro baseball game and the Twinbee Collection, both used so they were like $40 each) before that came out.

I think the most I ever paid for a Playstation game was $120 (lol) for the Japanese version of Tekken 2.  It came out like 10 months earlier than the American version and a shortage drove the prices up.  I actually pre-paid $110 for it and was told they had to jack the price up another $10 when I picked it up.  I went back to the car and asked my dad for $10; he totally lost it and wanted to go scream at those guys for ripping off a teenager.  The funny thing is that months later, I ended up working at that game shop.   :lol

I built up my PS1 collection twice.  Had everything I wanted in 1998, but sold everything off to pay off a debt (TO the game store for buying too many games on layaway!  :lol :-[) of almost $1000, IIRC.  It took me pretty much a decade after that to get everything back again.  The only thing I was missing ended up being the Metal Gear Solid Japanese limited edition, but I didn't care about getting that back.

Landstalker's viewpoint makes it a pain to play.

Isometric  :heartbeat

I don't know about Alundra, but Silhouette Mirage is pretty fucked.  Japan version has unlimited ammo and lets you focus on actually playing the already weird and challenging game.   U.S. version limits the ammo and does other things to make it a giant pain in the ass to play.  WTF were they thinking making major balance changes to these games

Pepsiman is cool.  It's one of the few imports I have for the PS1.  I liked it because it reminded me of 3d world runner on the nes.

My collection is wimpy since this is back when I had to sell game to buy games.  Worst part of it is that I have the case for megaman x4, but have no clue where the CD is. Or that I sold some good games, and ended up with that crappy Ninja game as part of my collection.

Classic Working Designs "rebalancing."

Years back I imported Silpheed The Lost Planet for the PS2.  It was made by GameArts and published by Capcom.  It was a huge turd and I posted about how shitty it was on Usenet.  Since WD was localizing it (Capcom USA knew better!), Victor Ireland had to chime in how they were going to make it better by essentially gimping the options and making shit take more hits, IIRC.   :lol

Raban - Tobal 2

Don - SM WD version is ridiculous. Shame we never got the real version but I hear Saturn version is better anyways.

Frying - in terms of imports the ones I'm currently eyeing are Ore no Ryouri, Pepsiman, Sexy Parodius, Vib Ribbon, and Gunners Heaven.

WD was cool back in the 16-bit era, when they brought out stuff that otherwise had no chance in hell of making it outside of Japan.  Then RPGs got more popular and WD releasing a game meant it took 3-4 times as long for it to come out compared to another publisher releasing it.  They also had some questionable localization choices with pop culture references (I still remember Popful Mail's"Melrose is on at 9 and I need my weekly dose of Heather!"), but I can see how attempting to actually LOCALIZE a game could in their favor versus a straight-up translation.  But RPG players didn't want that shit.

I never did play Ore No Ryouri.  Need to try that sometime.

Ore no Ryouri had probably the coolest demo. I've always wanted the full game. The fact we never got a translation always devastated me. But I don't think you need to know Japanese to put it off. Still had one of the coolest and unique uses of the dual shock dual stick set up I've ever seen in a time when right sticks were used for more than just cameras.

Thinking of it, Ore no Ryouri would prolly work well on smartphones

Sounds better. I always hated how much health the enemies had. Just made the fights really drawn out. I just beat the dude who guards the water boots and it was a 20 minute fight.

At the time it was one if the cooler things to happen to MK since 3 ultimate and 4 weren't good. Not a bad game man.

What about Legend Of Legaia?

LoL (:lol) isn't a bad game just middling but that was enough for 13 year old me. I haven't played it since release though.

You don't need to know English, and a guy on gaf made a game inspired by ore no ryouri for PC and ipad called "cook, serve, delicious."  It's pretty good.

It needs to show up on PSN one of these days.  The PS1 imports up there now aren't worth a damn.  I'd rebuy it just to play on Vita.

To me it is funny how developers are trying to find alternative control methods to craft new game types then I remember games like Ape Escape and Ore no Ryouri. Games that had unique controls in a time when it was the wild west of just figuring out what the hell to do with that second stick. It is hilarious they're seeking out all these outlandish things to find new ways to control when they already have the means to achieve this with the dual stick set up.

Create levels from audio CDs
Still looks damned good today, especially on a PSP/Vita/PS3

Unfortunately - this is a capture of the first level which is a bit straight forward and doesn't show the full demo-scene style graphic crazy of the game.

Not a psx exclusive but I can't separate this and Jumping Flash from early psx.

I remember thinking the name was dumb and was mistrustful of it at first due to Jaguar and 3DO. Then I went to Circuit City one time in 96 or so and played some Ghost in the Shell, Jumping Flash and ESPN. Came away mighty impressed. When Tomb Raider and Crash came out I wanted one even more.

I'm still amazed at what Sony did with that system. I mean we had two companies synonymous with gaming, Sega and Nintendo. And Sony entered the fray and just ate them up - worldwide. N64 and Saturn weren't even bad systems. Psx was just getting.g the right stuff at the right time and any other variable could have made a.completely different outcome

Amazing generation in general.

The reason why it was so good is because the dev. costs were so cheap, so you got a lot of random JP companies releasing random shit on it, that had SOUL. Unlike most modern games. Check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBUTzCgh3CA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbuExbwu40Q

(I only realyl play JP games, last westenr game I played was 50 Cent: Bulletproof, which was a good game. What is your favorite western game, folks?)

If I could like posts twice, I would do it with this post. This system is going to get me back into game collecting. I didn't sell ANY of my psx games, and I'm sitting here with about 50 psone games, mostly all NTSC.

Those three videos are amazing. Lots of stuff I've never even seen nor witnessed nor touched and most of them can be played without knowing Japanese. Simply amazing. Whoever says playstation 1 hasn't aged well should be slapped in the face. Twice.

PSX APPRECIATION THREAD? I GOT YO' BACK, BRUDDAH. :DAP
(http://i.imgur.com/smg6c1s.jpg) (http://imgur.com/smg6c1s)

It was a seriously wonderful piece of hardware. I think you can trace Sony's "beginning of the end" back to the utter failure of marketing on this piece of hot hardware.

It was a digital video recorder with no internet requirement (G-Guide received data through standard analog TV signal); users could edit the recorded programs, delete ads, or write them to a lower recording quality to save HDD space; a DVD-R/RW writer which could author DVDs with menus based on super easy templates; and it had an ethernet port for connection to the internet; oh, and it had a PS2 in it, so you could play games, download PS2 network games, or PS1 games.

If the TV industry hadn't switched to digital-only broadcasts here, I'd still be using it.

Oh, wait. You mean the first PS. Yeah, it was pretty cool.

Popolocrois is one of those jrpgs I've wanted to play but couldn't due to language barrier.

there is a psp version that is translated

i think i played it exactly for 5 minutes before the encounter rate got me

:yuck Azure Dreams.

ehy azure dreams is a good game! but it's a roguelike with mon,not exactly what i would call a relaxing game, tail concerto too,it's more like a furry worse version of megaman legends

Yeah Azure is the wrong game I'm thinking of. One of those b tier rpgs. Thousand Arms! Right. It has been over ten years. Sorry.

Yeah, the PSP version of Popolocrois featured a heavily-modified version of the story of the first 2 games on PS1. It also suffered from framerate drops and high encounter rate IIRC. I have both the import original, and the PSP game, the latter sits unopened... still to this day.

Lovely boxart though:

thousand arms is boooooooooooooring, when you enter a battle only 1 of your party members can fight while the other all dick around and support your fighting one,it's not much of a dicking around game as it is just another jrpg

the only things that make the game somewhat amusing are it's 90 anime look and the fact that it can be perceived as a prototype of many :uguu rpg that came later on

have you ever played monster rancher? maybe you could dig that,i totaly loved the game as a kid,it's a monster raising simulation game but you create your monsters depending on your CD,some CD even net you special monsters (one of the monsters you can get is a demon girl and if you put dead or alive you get one that looks like kasumi for example, metal gear get you a bandana monster :lol)
Title: Re: Dat PSX Appreciation thread

I remember liking Thousand Arms when I did my psx rpg binge in 2001 along with suikoden 1/2, azure dreams, tales of destiny, tactics ogre;etc But that was over 12 years ago and I only played it once.

Never played Monster Rancher. I'm not really talking about rpgs.

Forgot about Boku no Natsuyasumi. Those three vids Tiesto posted had a few games like it. Definitely consider the train sims in the same category. Welp, time to learn Japanese.

curious if monster rancher will hold up without the novelty of finding monsters in CDs.  I barely remember the 'game' part of it.  this is all around the pokemon period and I ended up playing monster rancher and digimon world games more than I should have.  dark times.

Man...I don't give a shit about MML, MML2, or Tron Bonne at this point.  Have 'em all complete.  I never check these prices...it sounds like I could sell a few "rare" games and fund the next Xbox and Playstation.

EDIT: I see Tron Bonne completed auctions for $100-$170.  Where is $250 coming from?  New, factory-sealed copies go for more.

Nope.  PS1-only, Japanese only.  Pretty much all in English, so it's weird that it never got a western release.

Polygon Magic also released Shaolin, a four-player simultaneous fighter, but it also sucked like Vs. did.  Don't they just make CG movies for games now?

And weird, I see SHRB listed as a 2011 release for Playstation on Gamefaqs.  Did they re-release PS1 games that late or was it added to PSN?

Highly suggest going through Musashi for anyone who wants a Zelda like game for the psx that isn't Alundra. I replayed it last year and it is still a fantastic game. Straight up classic.

Threads of Fate

One of the better looking ps1 games for sure.

Like Musashiden, it is another game where you gain the abilities of monsters you kill. Except that in Threads of Fate, you actually change INTO the monster.

Another beautiful Squaresoft Ps1 project and it pulls off most of what it sets out to do extremely well. I find it to be on the more ignored side of Square's ps1 games compared to others like the Final Fantasy's, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve;etc.

I remember when Square took chances; Brave Fencer, Einhander, Tobal... what the hell happened?

HOly fuckin shit those games are awesome, whatever happened to Japan
Yeah, I moved here and started working in the Japanese game industry just in time for it to become a detriment, rather than a benefit to my résumé.

FFTSW and almost dying is what happened. Then they got Yoichi Wads, a conservative businessman as president whose main priority is always in profit. Of course now SE is as the point where if they don't release FF regularly they'll die.

Then again that is half their fault for failing to continuing to craft successful new ip's, so fell into a loop they themselves created by playing it safe. We can only hope the new SE president brings us back to a time when SE were experimental but I fear they've ran off almost half their talented staff.

Yes, and they're also crazy bloated and prone to bad management practices, like many Japanese companies. The boat is sinking, and the only advice you'll hear is "Don't make waves!"

I think to this day the original PlayStation is the classiest looking console.

Imagine this with a more modern paint finish with no controller ports, eject, reset, and power made small LED buttons along the front panel and a wii esque disc tray that glows blue.

I want to make a mock up of that when I get home. :gladbron

It looks like a toy to me. When I think of classy I don't think of toys. Don't be too mad. I feel the same way about the PS one design, ps2, slim, 3, 3 slim, AND 3 ghetto slim.

Ps1 og looks like a stereo player from the late 90's ignoring the controller ports. I like how that blends with the rest of the entertainment cab so for that reason I think the original wii, wii u, xbox 360 slim, ps1 are the best designed consoles in terms of looks. I don't like it when consoles look like toys (snes, PS one, gc) unless it is a handheld.

Is it random? I recall it was the same as backdash stumble settings per character. Then you can unlock characters in the dungeon such as Sylph (or was it Dryad?) which was the same as Gren, but with no backdash stumble.

seemed random, unless it's like a running tally that stumbles you each time you backdash a certain amount of times.

in that case, I want that char because I use Gren!

I've used something like this AGES AGO, under Win2K. Mine had drivers, so I'm not trusting that the "plug n play" aspect of your featured item is legit, but then again I know dick-all about PnP under Win, so...

I have two PS1/2 adapters and neither of them requires drivers. I think in most cases you only need drivers to make the rumble work, the other functions work just fine with whatever generic drivers Windows has.

Damn nice collection. Jelly. How are the Lupin and Macross games? I played the demo to an import Macross game and loved it. Iirc it was a rail shooter? Or an Ace Combat clone? Either way, was great. Is that it? What kind of game is the Lupin game?

any here play X-files on PS1?

It's the only game I don't recognize.  I've been curious about it for years.

I've played it. I borrowed it from the German foreign exchange student in high school. :lol

It's okay, it's basically your standard FMV adventure game. Mostly cutscenes, light on gameplay. You go from scene to scene, pick up stuff and talk to people. I think it's about 3 hours long and it comes on 4 discs.

BTW, awesome collection, bork.

Nah, sorry, I want to hold onto it.

hell yeah!  That's a great collection.

It's been a long, long time since I last played it, but I remember it being pretty good.  This was back in the days when "Bandai" usually meant "total shit, too.

The Lupin game is a simplistic music game.  Just time the button presses to various Lupin-related music videos.  It has the Pizzicato Five Lupin theme, so I bought it.   :P

Macross was originally released on the Saturn and ported to the PS1.  It's a 2D side-scrolling shooter based on the original movie and has original animation plus clips from the movie, plus the soundtrack is from the movie too IIRC.  It's a pretty easy game but they did such a good job of making a good movie-based game out of it...

...Whereas that Cowboy Bebop game is total CRAP why do I still have that?   :lol :yuck

HAHAHAHA

Who would think that when looking at the cover?

Thanks, but there some guys here (DCharlie) that I'm sure totally put me to complete and utter shame.   :lol  My collection is more of stuff I just wanted rather than trying to complete anything, though.  There are some games in there that I did buy, at the time, to keep and try to resell for a profit later on as well.

you ever played it? it's a decent puzzle game where you have to build a condominium, each room you build has a resident on it which annoys people in certain direction (for example one guy has a bamboo stalk growing out of his head so he annoys people above him) and you have to place them so that nobody gets too annoyed, sometimes bad resident enter your palace and you have to instead annoy the shit out of them

Used to have it; sold it off.  I got rid of almost all the JRPGs I had- bought them for collecting purposes and then decided I didn't care.

yay, glad to see it got there safely!  Let me know how it is, I haven't bothered to set up epsxe for it yet.

That's the japanese catalog the guy sent it in, which makes me wanna order more stuff from japan.  So many foreigner models, thought that was kinda funny.

Yeah, the poses and stuff they make Caucasian models take in Japan should be criminal.

As should much of their in-print advertising.

that's not a churro.  in that screen, you're slicing chikuwa (a tube shaped fish paste) to add to ramen.

you can get churros in japan, but they're pretty much ordinary, basic ones.  nothing exciting or wacky.

yes, twas a joke.  is chikuwa the thing with the swirl in it that's star shaped?

Unless they're at Mister Donut, in which case they're a weird, hard, cold, overly sweet monstrosity.
