Title: Final Fantasy V 4 Job Fiesta - Restricted FFV playthrough for charity
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on June 17, 2013, 05:43:40 PM
http://www.letsplaying.com/FF5FF/

Basically, a TwitterBot gives you four random jobs. THOSE ARE YOUR JOBS. You cannot use any other jobs in the game. Good luck.

There are a few other restrictions, but those are the most salient for your first playthrough. Proceeds go to Child's Play.

I signed up ... anyone else interested?

I've been doing it the past 48 hours. Did it last year.

Doing a regular run, I dont find the "special rules" that interesting.

My first job was ... Thief (http://www.letsplaying.com/FF5FF/players.php?player=avestal). :stahp

My pledge is:  $10 now, $10 when I finish, $20 if I don't, and $1 each time the game plays ~Battle on the Big Bridge~

I beat it with Thief, Geomancer, Berzerker, and Chemist

It's doable!

I may sideload FFV onto my Nexus 4 and emulate my way through it ?! It's not the best way to play, but it's most likely way I'll get enough playtime in...

Once I unlock Thief, do I have to change everyone to Thief? Or can I keep them Freelancer until my 2nd, 3rd, 4th jobs are unlocked?

Yes, everyone goes Thiaf.

When you get Water crystal, you can have a mixture of the two. You can also mix abilities if you want.

The main rule is - only those four jobs -

How do these rules work.  Do you play jobless until you can do the jobs?

It works like this (assuming no special rules)

- Freelancer
- Unlock Wind Crystal
- Twitter Bot assignes a job
- You turn all 4 characters into that job, that is your ONLY job
-- NO MORE FREELANCER BEYOND THIS POINT --
- Unlock Water Crystal
- Twitter bot assigns another job
- You can now use only those TWO jobs. You can mix and match.
- Unlock Fire Crystal
- Twitter bot assigns another job
- You can now use THREE jobs. Mix and match.
- Unlock Earth
- Twitter bot assigns final job
- You can only use FOUR jobs. Mix and Match.
- Beat game

Okay. When you first start it up you dibt have a class. When you get to the wind  crystal you go and tweet #water to gilgabot and he assigns you a job. You have to have all party members as that job. Get to next crystal and you get your second job. You have to use your old job on top of the new job in your party. This can be 3-1 or 2-2. Just make sure all jobs are represented. You keep doing this until you beat the game.

Beaten by Demi.

You can switch around jobs as you see fit, if you are in a story situation that requires a mixup.

No, you can only have ONE Mystic Knight. However, you can have the other persons have Spellblade if you want.

Okay, so as long as I have 1 of each I can mix and match and subclass (unless you're going #natural which I assuredly am not)

This explains the rules as well.

http://www.letsplaying.com/FF5FF/help.php?s=e

Quote
Wind crystal jobs available:
Everyone must be Monk.
Water crystal jobs available:
You must have one Monk and one Berserker. The either two characters may be either Monk or Berserker.
Fire crystal jobs available:
You must have one Monk, one Berserker and one Beastmaster. The last character can be Monk, Berserker or Beastmaster.
Earth crystal jobs available:
For the rest of the game you must always have one Monk, one Berserker, one Beastmaster, and one Dancer in your party.

A character need not remain one class exclusively. For example, if Bartz is the Berserker and Krile the Beastmaster, you can swap Bartz to the Beastmaster and Krile to the Berserker at any time. Unlocked sub-skills can be used with any other job.

Yup. This isn't the case if you have their berserker chance though. With that one you have the chance of all four getting berserker. I think that happened to rk once.

The only problem I have with this is that all the "exploits" and easy methods are written out, making replays kind of mundane. I guess theres no getting around that, but I also dont do many replays of games unless I'm really jonesing.

Thankfully I've received jobs I didnt get last year, so it's neat to see how they work this time around.

I think this is a neat rule, only because that's the "element" the characters are assigned at the Wind Shrine.

I'm probably thinking that's a #natural run. IIRC Naturals also doesn't allow you to mix those four chosen jobs together. What you get is the one job for that one person for the entire game with only that jobs skills to use. Makes it a little "harder."

You dont have to pledge to play.

Some people pledge based on completed games and whatnot.

Here is the gist:

- Pledge or don't
- Sign up through twitter (@ff5forfutures #reg)
- At each crysta, tweet (@ff5forfutures #water / #fire / #earth)
- You will see your next job
- When you beat the game, or beat the special bosses, tweet -- include photo proof of your victory screen (like the one I posted earlier)

RK's an honest guy.  He expects y'all to be honest too.

and if you cheat and use another job on a restricted playthrough then all you are doing is playing Final Fantasy V and God knows we've all done THAT before

Yeah that is an honor system. He has a "job fair" where you can actually pay to get a new job from that crystal, however. Say you get Thief and you want dope ass Black Mage... you have to PAY for that.

Basically in the first year it was done for charity, lots of people played and had fun, but donations were pretty much driven by about five or six big spenders.  So RK asked his friends for ideas and came up with some ideas himself to get a little more money flowing in from players.  The paying to change your job thing was my idea, and I admit it really relies heavily on the honour system, but I figured, and RK agreed, if you cheat, you're pretty much cheating yourself and sick kids.

I like the way RK let people pay to "sway" his jobs. I think it would be interesting if the original player could pay to "weight" certain jobs, but fans/friends could pay to counter-balance/berserker rush... I dunno. I am SUPER keen on the idea but think the way it's monetized could be significantly improved.

You use Paypal and message RK on GAF or Twitter or wherever and let him know your donation amount and stuff so he can confirm it. Again: Honor system in play.

No rules
Title: Re: Final Fantasy V 4 Job Fiesta - Restricted FFV playthrough for charity
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on June 17, 2013, 08:12:27 PM
No rules against using emulators.  Lots of people do so they can take screenshots.

Howard, I definitely agree it could be monetized better and if you have some ideas, I'm more than happy to pass them along to RK.  I'll at least let him know the stuff you mentioned already.

I think the biggest problem right now is that the person playing and the person donating are the same. One of the best things about these runs are watching other people squirm as they play through the game in sub-optimal circumstances. So I think any improvement needs to focus on letting Person(s) B donate cash to influence the party makeup of Person A.

I'd add financial tiers with both "whitelist" and "blacklist" potential. "Whitelist" = "If I get $20, my Wind Crystal class will definitely be Monk." "Blacklist" = "If I get $20, I will be unable to roll a White or Black Mage."

Blacklist in particular would be interesting. Imagine a UI that lets you set up $20, $50 and $100 tiers with 3-5 classes per tier. As other people donate and your "sponsorship" passes each tier, the classes at that tier become "locked" and there's no way you can roll them. Stacking the donation tiers for maximum drama could almost be a game in and of itself.

On the other hand, part of what makes this so interesting is the random nature of the playthroughs, so I wouldn't want to add TOO much rigidity and ability to influence the outcome ... it's a careful balancing act.

Yeah, and that's cool for him - but I think that should be expanded to anyone playing.

I'm really jazzed about this because FFV is best FF and I like breaking games + speed runs.

lol. I think thats a bit overkill, myself. You dont even have Fire or Earth yet to determine your strengths and weaknesses.

oops, I meant Earth. I have Fire (Ninja). I guess I'll get Earth before I go Super Grindan but I have a feeling I'm gonna need to rod break / scroll throw my way through most of World 2

THEORYCRAFTING: I am Thief/Time Mage/Ninja. What would be my "best" fourth class? Samurai/Dragoon/Dancer/Chemist

I'm hoping for Chemist because I have no healer and he'd have great item synergies. Samurai could be a better tank, but would mean a lotta gil grinding to get past bosses. Dancer would be hilarious to mix with Thief/Ninja but I don't know what I'd get except Ribbons.

Chemist, since it can heal and do other stuff like Haste, Reflect, Double HP... etc

Yeah... what's my second best choice? And is it considered poor sportsmanship to pay to change it to Chemist? ;) I know I "could" finish with just about any party, but I think a Chemist would be the most interesting.

I dont think it would be poor sportsmanship, but it means you're bitchmade ;)

I beat it with a pretty shitty team (Thief/Berzerk/Geomancer/Chemist), you already have the advantage of Ninja and Time Mage (Quick = 2 turns; Meteo/Comet; Hastega...).

Dont forget you can do subclassing. Your Thief can do some Dancing, or Mixing, or Casting spells as support.

Good luck. I'm at the ship graveyard. I'm nothing but knight. No heals so it is tricky but knight has good defense, crit, guard, AND cover so I got my bases covered. Trying not to waste tonics (yes I'm playing Anthology version). Plan on getting to fire today. Shouldn't be that long now.

Man, I have new respect for FFV which I didn't think possible given Ilove the game highly. But my knight run of the fiesta is actually challenging. I am running away from half of the battles in this dungeon because I skipped out on armor at the last town. I can do damage but my defense is weakkkk. Can't wait to fight the boss. :p

its the Sfam version tougher the advance version? Because lol. Haven't played sfam since 2000.

Just finished Fork Tower with my Thief/Time Mage/Ninja/Dancer party.

Trying to figure out the best policy against Exdeath:
- Everyone gets two weapons!
- Everyone can cast Meteor!
- Everyone can equip a Ribbon!

Is there any sort of a "Panacea" item? Without White Magic to bulk-remove debuffs, Grand Cross could take me, like, 14 turns to remove. Ribbons it may be.

Get the Magic Lamp. It's a quick kill against one part of Neo, and Shoat is a possible second kill.

Meteor spam would be a good choice.

Get the Chicken Knife and max it out.

Already did. WTF would anyone take the Brave Blade. That's a sucker's game.

EDIT: It looks like Magic Lamp lets non-Summoners call Summons? *sigh* I have been avoiding Summons 'cause I didn't think they had any purpose for me.  :'(

Well, you mostly want it for the Baha(mut) Blast, so not too terrible.

EDIT2: Do you even need to have "gotten" the summon for Magic Lamp to call it?

EDIT3: Probably not a bad idea to charge Wonder Wand up to the -Ga spells and unload in the last battle, too.

You want Magic Lamp for Odin, and Shoat. Also for some bosses in the Void that it can help out on.

No, all summons are available. It runs in a set order. Look up the order and you can set the Lamp to be ready for a specific summon.

You can then recharge the lamp by going back to the place you got it.

I ground a couple more levels and beat them easy as shit.  I hate having to do micro management of turns in these games, because I suck at it.  So, my options are either a) get really good at it or b) grind until the content isn't as tough anymore.  I'ma grind.

Thief gets much better later on.

No Back Attacks, can see hidden passages and potholes (not necessary if using a guide, but still useful), can steal shit from enemies (especially Genji from Gilgamesh, assuming you get characters who can equip the shit).

Flee is great to just GTFO out of fights cause they are annoying

Otherwise just stick a sub-class on them (Summon is a good choice already) to help out.

2500 XP per person.

I really won't have to grind because just going through the desert and then through the forests and mountains and then taking the meteor portal takes a huge a effort every time I play. #VICTOLY

My heaviest hitter BY FAR was Bartz. He was a Dancer with Ninja dual-wielding subclass. He carried the Chicken Knife, and Dance doesn't trigger the 25% run penalty. He would hit for about 15k per turn, and thanks to Lamia Crown/Rainbow Dress/Red Slippers, would trigger Sword Dance about 2/3 of the time. BOOM. Meteor spam also helped.

My biggest problem was when Neo Exdeath used Almagest. I have no high HP skills so only my Ninja would survive with 200 HP. Keep your HP up!!

I think he should try to get some sort of well known people to do streams, like five or so.  And then figure out a way to weigh contributions so that they increase the person's chances of getting a particular job- $1 puts 1 thief chance into the drawing for wind crystal, etc etc.

I'd like it if there were other games you could do this similar style of gameplay with.

FFV seems really, really balanced in regards to this, so I'm not sure any other job based games have this flexibility.
Title: Re: Final Fantasy V 4 Job Fiesta - Restricted FFV playthrough for charity
Post by: Himu on July 01, 2013, 01:49:44 PM
I was thinking X-2, but the reason FFV's 4 job fiesta is so fun is because you each successive job in gulps. In FFX-2 you get a whole bunch throughout the game.

And games like FFX: International, FFXII: International, don't let you change jobs once you've chosen at the beginning of the game.

Seems FFV is tailor made for this kinda thing.
