It's a massive country, that's a tough one.
I'll be West coast-centric, though. Take a drive up highway 101 through California, Oregon and Washington. Hit the redwoods, San Francisco, the awesome breweries along the Oregon coast, drive over to Portland, then up I-5 to Seattle. Take a day trip to Mt. Rainier.
Southern Utah, specifically the Moab areaMoab is great. We scattered my wife's grandmother's ashes under one of the arches.

California is pretty cool I guess.
Fuck all this backcountry shit. Find the best 5 star resort in La Jolla, California and call it a day.
Bozeman, Montana
St. Louis, Missouri
Houston, Texas
Think I should ad this will take place in summer.
Detroit

A 101 trip is pretty great. I want to take a train ride up the Pacific Coast sometime.
Don't ever call it San Fran though. Or Frisco.
It's a bit out of the way, but:Hell yeah. 2nd this. Beautiful place to visit.

Carlsbad Caverns is really amazing. Descending deep into the earth, getting to see some of the most incredible underground rock formations in the entire country, feeling the weight of billions of tons of rock above your head, it's great.
An officer held up the coat and barked: ‘Who takes a coat to the US in the summer?!’ I answered it would keep me dry, in case the New Orleans levees would break again. The officer remained silent. He dropped my coat like a dishcloth.
