I was riding my bike this Friday and suddenly blacked the fuck out when I woke up to EMT's hands on my body and a lady firefighter telling me that I'm gonna be okay, and that I was in an accident.
I apparently got rear-ended, flipped over the car, and the driver just bailed. I recieved pretty superficial scrapes and bruises on my left side, I "degloved" a portion of my scalp about the size of a milky way bar, and fractured a vertebrae, but the doctors assure me it's stable.

Thanks to some eyewitnesses they caught the guy that did it, but a friend of mine assures me that if this isn't a repeat offender, a trial is probably a ways off. What's more disappointing is that the first person I asked the doctors to call was my dad, and his reaction was to send my brother, who in turn told me that my dad said things like "I deserve it" or "this is God's punishment".

Basically, he's gone off the fucking deep end.

Right now I'm looking amongst my irl friends for a place to say, as no one stays in my house long enough to take care of me for the one-month-minimum of recuperation needed in the brace. Since I don't have insurance (application is in for Obamacare tho), no job, and no money, it feels like they're scooting me out of here asap. Apparently I'll be home by Monday, so I'm frantically working to set something up before they send me packing.

I just wanted to make this thread for emotional support, and I'll keep y'all updated about my condition. I still can't believe I'm alive. Wasn't even wearing a helmet :-\

I wouldn't worry about the money situation too much, hospitals will write off most of the bill if they have to in cases where the patient isn't going to be able to afford it and with the guy running from the scene, I'm sure his insurance company is probably going to want to settle quickly. Just call a few injury lawyers and see what you have to do and what you can expect to get.

And I don't envy how itchy your head must feel right now.

Have you talked to the hospitals financial advisors? If not you should explain your situation to them they might be able to pull some strings as well.

Jesus I'm so sorry things have been so screwed up for you. I would have thought your dad would have been better after he took that vacation and had sometime to digest things.

I'd offer up my place, but my situation Is complicated right now. I'll try and reach out to my aunt over there and see if her church might be able to help. They are Unitarians so they accept all people, if you're concerned with that stuff.

so my advice? if the douche has insurance, get a lawyer, ASAP

He is a 6'5" 440 pounds former NCAA Division 1 Defensive Tackle. He ended up losing more blood than I have in my body. The daughter was fine, barring a few scrapes. The man himself broke 13 bones and tore a buncha cartilage in his knee.

His first words to me afterwards were "If the sonofabitch had sprung for a Cadillac, I'da died!"

I also gave him the nickname "Mr. Newton's Second Law". He thought it was hilarious.

He has made a pretty full recovery. I still play Magic: The Gathering with him every Tuesday.

Thankfully, I've finally found a place to stay while I recover. Staying with my friend's family in the same town. NOW I can rest easy knowing I won't have to see my father's stupid fucking face when I get out. Hallelujah.

If I can get a settlement out of the dude that hit me, the first thing I'm buying is plane tickets for The Biz and Mups to my place so they can do all manner of unspeakable things to my body :phil

As others have mentioned, get a lawyer immediately. They will work for their share of the awards, and don't require any money up front. Get advice from them on what to do about the hospital bill, as the award is usually a linear function of how much the hospital charges. When I was in a car accident ages ago, it was triple the doctor bills, so 1/3 to the hospital, 1/3 to the lawyer, and 1/3 to me. That's just for reference. So it's possible that the more you rack up in bills, the more the asshole's insurance company will have to pay. Note: IANAL, so this may be different now.

Anyway, I'm glad you're not dead, and likely to make a full recovery.

PS: Your dad's an asshole, too.

Before any of this happened, I was already planning to move in with them. I can't stay there rent-free forever so hopefully I can sort out an income once I've recovered. One step at a time ;)

I'm calmed down now, at my friends' house all tucked in and getting my perscriptions filled. Thanks for the support as always, guys. I just still can't believe this really happened to me. It's wave after wave of shock, and I'm quite ready for the day to be over.

Hair grafts onto scarred or burned skin are also covered by insurance.

Don't worry too much about the hair. It sucks now but they can do a lot if it doesn't come back right. When I was little, my sis had a car crash and head injury, so she didn't have much hair for awhile, but it all came back. It was scary at the time because I was 6 and hair was really really important, and hers was so fabulous, but looking back, it was the early 90s and that big hair needed to go anyway.

He pretended to be a witness when the police arrived, left, and was caught again when his car ran out of gas on the side of the road where he finally fessed up after the officer noticed damage to the car.

I also got to see the plastic surgeon today and removed some of the sutures. I can finally wash my head, too :D
