I was riding my bike this Friday and suddenly blacked the fuck out when I woke up to EMT's hands on my body and a lady firefighter telling me that I'm gonna be okay, and that I was in an accident.
I apparently got rear-ended, flipped over the car, and the driver just bailed. I recieved pretty superficial scrapes and bruises on my left side, I "degloved" a portion of my scalp about the size of a milky way bar, and fractured a vertebrae, but the doctors assure me it's stable.

Thanks to some eyewitnesses they caught the guy that did it, but a friend of mine assures me that if this isn't a repeat offender, a trial is probably a ways off. What's more disappointing is that the first person I asked the doctors to call was my dad, and his reaction was to send my brother, who in turn told me that my dad said things like "I deserve it" or "this is God's punishment".

Basically, he's gone off the fucking deep end.

Right now I'm looking amongst my irl friends for a place to say, as no one stays in my house long enough to take care of me for the one-month-minimum of recuperation needed in the brace. Since I don't have insurance (application is in for Obamacare tho), no job, and no money, it feels like they're scooting me out of here asap. Apparently I'll be home by Monday, so I'm frantically working to set something up before they send me packing.

I just wanted to make this thread for emotional support, and I'll keep y'all updated about my condition. I still can't believe I'm alive. Wasn't even wearing a helmet $:-\$

ugh dealing with the american health care system when you don't have insurance is the worst in situations like this. even worse when you're not driving a car and therefore are not covered by your car insurance. they'll definitely kick you out well before you should be out. i hope you find a good lawyer to go hard at the culprit's insurance company to get lots and lots of money.

And sue the shit out of that asshole of a driver if possible, I guess accidents can happen but just then just driving away is a crime.

Damn that's tough having to figure out a place to stay so fast, and the recovery sounds pretty bad too but they usually overestimate how long it takes you to heal.

I wouldn't worry about the money situation too much, hospitals will write off most of the bill if they have to in cases where the patient isn't going to be able to afford it and with the guy running from the scene, I'm sure his insurance company is probably going to want to settle quickly. Just call a few injury lawyers and see what you have to do and what you can expect to get.

And I don't envy how itchy your head must feel right now.

You need to ask for a social worker asap. Have them try and see if they can find you a rehabilitation center where you can stay. Have you talked to the hospitals financial advisors? If not you should explain your situation to them they might be able to pull some strings as well.

Jesus I'm so sorry things have been so screwed up for you. I would have thought your dad would have been better after he took that vacation and had sometime to digest things.

I'd offer up my place, but my situation Is complicated right now. I'll try and reach out to my aunt over there and see if her church might be able to help. They are Unitarians so they accept all people, if you're concerned with that stuff.

Yeah I just got done speaking with a social worker who's gonna helo me get in touch with a local therapist who can help with my situation.

Living arrangements are still up in the air tho

after my car accident, i did what many advised in the past and hired a lawyer immediately. i didn't accept any payment from the drivers insurance company since that could've jeopardized the case and i had all my medical bills fronted by the lawfirm. all my medical bills were payed for and i ended up with a nice chunk of change in my pocket.

so my advice? if the douche has insurance, get a lawyer, ASAP

A friend of mine was hit by a car (a Buick Regal) awhile back. He was on foot, carrying his 7-year-old daughter in his arms. He is a 6'5" 440 pounds former NCAA Division 1 Defensive Tackle. He ended up losing more blood than I have in my body. The daughter was fine, barring a few scrapes. The man himself broke 13 bones and tore a buncha cartilage in his knee.

His first words to me afterwards were "If the sonofabitch had sprung for a Cadillac, I'da died!"

I also gave him the nickname "Mr. Newton's Second Law". He thought it was hilarious.

He has made a pretty full recovery. I still play Magic: The Gathering with him every Tuesday.

3 hours out.

Thankfully, I've finally found a place to stay while I recover. Staying with my friend's family in the same town. NOW I can rest easy knowing I won't have to see my father's stupid fucking face when I get out. Hallelujah.

If I can get a settlement out of the dude that hit me, the first thing I'm buying is plane tickets for The Biz and Mups to my place so they can do all manner of unspeakable things to my body
