Title: If yer goin' to San Francisco...
Post by: Robo on March 13, 2014, 11:59:09 AM
Visiting Frisco (don't call it that) with the lady for the first time in a couple weeks.  The plan is to stay in SF a couple days and spend the next few with a friend in Napa Valley.

What sort of stuff should we make sure we do while we're there?  Which sights to see?  Let's say I have some time alone and I come across a handful of poppers and I'm feeling backed-up, which one of you can I count on to accommodate my needs?

Go to the wharf.

Then go to wine country and pick up wine.

Then take a BART bus to Oakland instead.

The wharf is still fun. If you're going to be a tourist might as well pick up some San Francisco sourdough bread.

And Oakland rocks.

SAN FRACISCO SOURDOUGH BREAD.

GET SOME FRESH AND HOT FROM THE PIER 39 BOUDIN BAKERY AT THE WHARF. You can get Boudin Bakery a lot of places in SF, but the wharf has the chillest atmosphere and you get see tons of people go by their day. Highly suggested.

I AM SERIOUS. IF YOU DO NOT THIS WE ARE NO LONGER FRIENDS.

Go to Russian River Brewing out in Santa Rosa (Sonoma).

Or if you're going as far as Sonoma, visit Lagunitas' Sanctuary in Petaluma. Mmmmm. Lagunitas.

Dr. Comics and Mr. Games is a wonderful store. I spend at least a hundred bucks every time I walk in there.  :'(

You must seek out Super Duper burger it is awesome. Also hit up CASK and Hard Water if you are remotely interested in Whiskey/Scotch/Rye/Bourbon. If you like Gin head across the bridge to Alameda and check out St. George Spirits which is housed in a WWII hanger and is located on the airfield. Once you're done there I'd suggest going to the Pacific Pinball Museum that is there in Alameda. After that check out what Berkley has to offer, my favorite joint over there is Jupiters they make amazing pizza and have a large selection of Sours.

But more on point there is lots to see in SF area. If you've never ridden the trolley you should do that it's well worth it for the experience. I'd suggest ridding it from Union Square to the Wharf. That way you can experience the amazing vista looking over both Alcatraz and GoldenGate. Once there I'd  suggest a small food truck located near the wharf called Codmothers it has the most authentic british fish and chips I've ever had. After you've eaten I'd suggest the self guided tour of the USS PAMPANITO one of only a few subs left from WWII. Do not bother with Alcatraz you can learn more than you experience by just watching youtube. I'd also suggest climbing up to Coit Tower, be warned that some of the streets here are the steepest in the world. There's also the California Science Academy which is awesome to check out, and the old SF mint which offers a self guided tour. Don't miss out on going to the ferry building there you can take a little stroll up to Tcho chocolates which makes some awesome chocolate, better than the other SF chocolate factory. Also something of interest is inside the Union Square mall, the main rotunda is original and was lifted 6 stories to its present location. Its one of the most awesomist rotundas I've seen and there are tours of it.

I could go on and on theres a lot of cool places, hell if you want a guide with a car let me know and I'll take you around. I have a lot of fun going to all of these places.

This was literally 500 metres from my hotel while I was in SF and I didn't go there as we'd had burgers every second day of our three week trip. I am so sad about it :(

There was something like this on Fishermans Wharf I checked out, it had some awesome old arcade machines from the turn of the century.

Such a shame, you really should have gone there  :'(

Musée Mécanique is awesome, one of the few places I wouldn't mind paying full price for a game. It is a not for profit business which is awesome. Next time you need to go to the Pinball Museum though, it's all on free play and each zone has its own soundtrack from the period.

is that old arcade still there on the wharf? Even though I've lived near SF, I haven't really been to the wharf since I was a kid.

There used to be this place called Sam's Town just outside of Sacramento that had a large arcade with a historical arcade section. It had everything from early light gun games, arcade games, pinball machines and the penny picture viewers with photos of girls.  It shut down and I haven't found a historical/classic arcade collection like it since.

Sounds like Musée Mécanique is the place for you then. It's got all of that and then a few newer games for the tourists. It's great for the penny viewers, there are even a few extras you can view if you ask the folks working there. There is a penny film of the old ferry station operating that is right next to the building.

The penny viewers were awesome, and there's some old mechanical hockey and boxing games. There's also a mexican arm wrestling machine that totally kicked my ass :(

I appreciate the attempt at stating a case, anyway, rather than "derp oakland is just so kewl and betterrr, go there instead", but I have a time constraint and won't be going to Oakland or Berkeley.

On second thought, we may have some time to fill before heading to Napa.

If you're really into pizza hit up Cheeseboard in Berkeley.

I second going to Berkeley. There's a shop called C.R.E.A.M (Cookies Rule Everything Around Me) where you basically customize your own ice cream sandwich :drool
