I'm looking forward to eating dirty rice if it's there. But mostly stuffing, green beans and yams. I'm not looking forward to the turkey, as I don't want to be a willing participant in the death of 50 million birds, but considering that my family will have slaved over cooking it with sweat, love, and tears, and the fact that the bird will be dead anyways, it makes sense to not make it go to waste, unfortunately, and it would feel disrespectful to NOT eat it.

I can't wait to make the mashed potatoes for the family. I'm the only one entrusted with the recipe and my grandma is cognitively  falling off so it's my contribution now :tocry

You got off easy. We had our thanksgiving early this year and it always goes the same fucking way.

"Baby I got the food, you get the table ready"

"Baby I need you to go to the store for cranberries"

"Baby, I forgot to get rolls"

"Babe can you put the turkey in the oven"

"Baby can you take the turkey out of the oven"

"Stop eating already, people ain't even here yet"

"You really think you need a gin already?"

"Can you help uncle Felton with his car, he parking stupid again"

etc.

Oh I gotta tell this shit since we already had our thanksgiving (I gotta work out of state weds-sunday)

We got two peeps in our family that love to beef with each other....Charles, my wife's mooch as brother (31) and Felton my mother in laws mooch ass brother (he's 61 I think)....it's like oil and water these two. So here is the scene

21 of us eating dinner between kids and adults, everybody having fun and laughing then this out of nowhere....

Charles "Let me get some more gravy"

Felton "Nicca ask nicely, this ain't prison"

Charles "I ain't never been to prison, stop bullshittin"

Felton "Well you should be due to all your con artist type schemes man"

Charles "Like you got shit to say, you wanna do this again this year, old man"

Felton "I'll knock you senseless young blood, you and them stupid clothes you wearing"

Charles "Man like that chuck woolery 1988 suit you rockin is clean"

Me "lols"

Mother in law "that's enough out of you two, enough"

Felton "Fine sis but you need to get that son of yours in check, he stupid"

Charles "That's it man, we doing this right now"  (walks outside)

Mother in law goes over and locks the door "Okay then, so honey how was your prom?"

Of course we have our own things, but the traditional things are all still there, albeit with a twist.

Might have to rub some garam masala on that turkey :hitler :noah

I saw a tandoori turkey recipe once that sounded delicious, no way I'd be able to convince my family to try that though. :(

Had to cancel my camping trip; got some nasty respiratory system bug that also clouds my judgment (Are you sure that's a symptom of this, or just your general state of being? -Ed.) and makes me dizzy as heck. Not really a good thing to take to a national forest that specifically warns you about it being mostly unmarked while it's cold. ON THE PLUS SIDE, I now know what I'm doing for Christmas. 8) Smell ya later, Chinese food alone. :-*

I doubt I'll even be well enough to scour the commune, which I presumably would have had the opportunity to do on Thanksgiving since I imagine hope pray my comrades have somewhere else to be besides here drinking ungodly amounts of cheap beer and making late night Del Taco runs while non compos mentis because 30 is the new 19 and I can remove this filth we live in without looking like a fucking square who gives a shit.

Speaking of Del Taco, I remember getting food from there once on a Thanksgiving so I think that's what I'll be eating this year for Turkey Day. :lol

This will be my last thanksgiving with extended family for a long time, probably ever. this is my family's first exposure to the real me. My boyfriend is working and frankly, I need him right now. Half of the people I've known since birth aren't talking to me or are uncomfortable talking to me. I think I may skip Christmas this year.

I know that I'm supposed to be feel thankful and shit, and being moody is making me into a grouch,  but I'm not feeling very thankful towards anything right now. Not only do I have to deal with being black in a world that hates me, now I have to deal with family that thinks I'm a dirty cheeseburger.

What

It's a stanza from a poem Brecht wrote when he left Germany after the Nazi seizure of power. He's describing how people tell him to eat and drink and to enjoy what he has but all he can do is think about the people who are hungry and thirsty (presumably back home) who aren't getting the food and drink in front of him.

The depressing part is that he eats and drinks what's in front of him despite being unafflicted by the narrow spectrum amnesia that characterizes your average denizen of core countries.

The closing stanzas of the poem were probably a more apropos rebuttal but this is a culinary holiday.

two hour phone conversation with my sister about how keeping secrets affected the generations that came before us and how we don't want to end up with lives similar to theirs. Couple glasses of jim beam to get through it.

Typical drama shit thats just more acceptable now but wasn't back in the day. Stuff like raising kids that aren't yours but letting them find out way later in worse ways or having kids really young and giving it up for adoption but still kinda being in their life so all sorts of resentment and shit. Just burying or not facing any of that shit for decades and they're only coming out now because everyone is old and cant keep the bullshit straight. That and kids/grandkids wanting some history or backstory but always being met with vague bullshit and connections that make no sense out of context.

No South Florida is also terrible. Unless you're rich and Cuban then it's probably alright.
