antediluvian - an overly specific word in a language with a lexicon that's already too big that erudite people made into a generic adjective

crenelated - almost never used to describe fortifications

happiness - an illusory state of being used to justify being a shithead

splendiferous - has no business being uttered outside a Mary Poppins revival

I think "holistic" has taken the place of "synergy" in terms of meaningless corporate speak, which I think is an even more useless term than synergy.

Basically any corporate speak and any word derived from the internet in the past 15 years are words that I hate.

I only have two words I hate.

"Solutions" in marketing/sales/engineering. I fucking hope you have "solutions", otherwise you wouldn't have a business. Now tell me what the fuck it is you actually do.

The German word "pieseln", which simply means pissing, but seems to be so much closer to what the act sounds like. Can't stand it.

As far as words that annoyed me, "wheelhouse" really pisses me off for some reason. I hate it. As far as phrases go, "Very unique" is super annoying to me. Unique has a meaning superseding such adverbs.

ludonarrative dissonance  :holeup
I understand what you mean here, but at the same time,  can you think of any other two words which neatly encompass that? I mean, other than "bullshit story"?

dour - it doesn't rhyme with hour you illiterate fool (I like the word in a vacuum but in practice it's a disaster)

au fait - perhaps the most baffling adjective in English; at least a la carte has an adverb usage to help you understand it

excoriate - technical term blithely rendered into a synonym for chastise by people who should have had their creative licenses suspended
Title: Re: Words that you hate

Awkward - 9/10 times the situation wouldn't have been awkward if you hadn't said so.

Overrated/Underrated - reeks of "My opinion is the only correct one" self-centered nonsense.  There are lots of classic albums/movies/games/whatever that didn't really blow me away, but I can still recognize that they're well put together.  On the flipside  sometimes I get tons of enjoyment out of works that are mediocre or have glaring flaws.  I kind of like when my opinion clashes with the majority because it teaches me a lot about my own tastes.

hype.

Yes. Fuck hype.

Hype imo is basically people desperately trying to validate their poor investment in a particular thing. Waste years of your life following some silly sport? Well, drooling on yourself to a broadcast of Sportcenter's 24/7 dicksucking of Next Big Thing / Ultimate Disappointment will surely ease the pain. Poured thousands of dollars that you've earned through back breaking and/or soul sucking labor into videogames aka dumb toys for babies? Well, surely the upcoming, extra shiny game will be the one to finally fill the void inside. But only if you truly feel the hype for it.

But hey, I guess that's just life...trying to give meaning to the meaningless...  :larry

Serious answer:  distinguished mentally-challenged fellow(ed)

It's an archaic word to mean mental disabilities and it's used as a sweeping term for anything stupid, careless, or incompetent.  Having a nephew with cerebral palsy has made me very conscious to how poorly used the word is.  I won't go on a crusade to end it, and certain comedic context is fine by me, but I cringe every time I hear it now.  Just makes me uncomfortable.

Same.  Worked with people with disabilities and have a cousin with down syndrome.   It works well in some comedic contexts but most of the time when I hear it I think 'well that person is a shit head'.
