Hype imo is basically people desperately trying to validate their poor investment in a particular thing. Waste years of your life following some silly sport? Serious answer: distinguished mentally-challenged fellow(ed)

It's an archaic word to mean mental disabilities and it's used as a sweeping term for anything stupid, careless, or incompetent. Having a nephew with cerebral palsy has made me very conscious to how poorly used the word is. I won't go on a crusade to end it, and certain comedic context is fine by me, but I cringe every time I hear it now. Just makes me uncomfortable.

Same. Worked with people with disabilities and have a cousin with down syndrome. It works well in some comedic contexts but most of the time when I hear it I think 'well that person is a shit head'.
