Title: Screw the Nintendo Switch, buy the PS4 pro and return to JRPG godness
Post by: SantaC on November 07, 2016, 02:23:12 PM
damn, when was the last time we had these strong jrpgs coming out within the next 4 months? probably not in 10 years atleast. These three games will last me to summer 2017. Time to pick up a pro this friday  :rejoice

I'll just wait until those get a Steam release later in the year.

You've also got Nier, World of FF, Exist Archive, Odin Sphere HD, Grand Kingdom,  and Digimon Cyberslueth. So there's plenty of solid JRPGS on the system.

Actually pretty curious if P5 will get a patch since it came out before the deadline in Japan.  Could definitely use the supersampling to get rid of jaggies.

Cant wait for the inevitable posts by SantaC:

"FFXV is overrated - why does GAF love this game?"

"When will the Tales series be good? Berseria is crap"

"Could Persona be any more outdated and overrated? Ugh"

I guess all of them will come to PC one day (Berseria is day one on steam), but I rather not wait a year or two for FFXV and Persona 5.

What does the PS4 PRO do for JRPGs when it comes to visuals and performance that the PS4 can't do? :lol

Why the nintendo jab? You still not over them doing whatever they did to break your heart :heh

Only game that looks good there is Persona 5, btw. Not like anybody buys consoles for JRPGs anymore anyway.

wii u was my last nintendo console. I am incredibly burned by it.

Ironically only one game mentioned there has any Pro Enhancements.  Yet, 15 may have some actual good enhancements at that.

Oh boy, I get a whole five seconds off a 2 minute load-time! Time to repay $500 for a Pro!  ::) ::) ::) ::) *jackoff emote*

It's like buying more RAM than you need for games: It gives a small marginal benefit that isn't worth the investment. You'd be better off complaining to Sony to actually have Solid State Drives (that do impact loading more) do something on the PS4 instead of hindering.

Won't these all end up on either PS3, Vita, Xbox One, or PC at some point also? I'll stick to my rule of getting Sony consoles late in their life.

That only really worked out for the PS3 though. Which started off garbage till later on when it had decent exclusives. So far I only like two exclusives on the PS4, but really in this era getting a console is only if you don't really want a PC anyway.
I got the PS2 last also cause I was still a ninthing. :'(

All my friends had PS2s anyway, so I never felt like I missed much that gen.

You act like SATA3 is the only thing they added. Lets see:

-faster cpu
-better gpu
-more RAM
-better wifi (the current one is garbage)
-sata3 to use SSD disks

I am sure I forgot something, but the Pro is a nice machine indeed.

I doubt you're gonna see many Japanese devs take advantage of the PS4 Pro, hell Berseria and Persona 5 still have PS3 versions :P PS4 regular is still the way to go for RPG fans though who wanna game on the big screen, for now...

Switch may be good if the 3DS RPGs migrate to it as well as possibly some Vita niche devs (though these will probably go PS4 once the Vita kicks the bucket). And will get the next Monolith game and DQ11 (cross platform).

I wouldn't count on faster load times with a SATA3 SSD. If they've maxed out SATA2, then maybe, but the CPU still has to do all the work decompressing the data it shovels into memory. If the clock bump is not significant enough it might only shave off a couple of seconds. :doge

Just looked at the specs again: the GPU is the biggest upgrade, basically doubled its raw power. The 400MHz clock bump on the CPU is also nice. I forgot that the original was at 1,6GHz. :lol

You think Sony will allow it to be required (DK64, Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask)?

The fact that Conker didn't even use it was the second most impressive thing Rare did after Blast Corps.

The fans are also much larger, so they don't have to spin as fast as the blower in the PS4.

Surprisingly quiet.  It sits on my desk very close to my monitor, too.  Am really impressed with how they managed to cram so much into such a small form factor and have it run so well.  Literally half the inside of the PC is just the GTX 1070 alone.  :lol

My Ps4 Pro after getting lost at UPS showed up today.  Doing the 90 minute system transfer.

To be honest, I'm pretty fucking pissed at Sony for this system.  Like I already have a top of the line 60fps ultra settings gaming PC, so I'm buying this entirely for 1st party and Japanese not-yet-on-PC developers.  Also, perfectly know that it's only a bit more powerful than PS4, so not expecting a lot. That's fine, got no problem with it or spending $400 for a little stronger PS4.

BUT, I bought the thing on the idea I could swap it out for my PS4 and it would have 100% perfect compatibility and basically be a PS4 + better framerate/AA on games from this point on.  But now, not only are about 30% of released games running WORSE on Pro (fuck you devs, lower your goddamn resolution a touch and lock the framerate at 30fps), or they have an option to play at regular PS4 graphics with unlocked framerates fluctuating between 30-60fps which again is running WORSE on Pro than a locked 30fps game on regular PS4 imo, but on top of that World of FF is broken and looks like shit so there goes 100% compatibility.  It pisses me off because World of FF is actually a game I want to play in a couple months when I have some time for it, but now I'm literally going to plug in my old PS4 (which otherwise I'd give to a friend who doesn't have a PS4) and swap activations back and play World of FF on my old PS4 and maybe I'll do that for other games too if they're gonna run noticeably worse on Pro or unlocked vs a smooth locked 30fps on regular PS4.

Now there are some games that really benefit like Battlefield 1, and more games benefit so far than run worse (way too many running worse though), but all that stuff I can play on my PC so far.  Infamous SS is the only game that runs better that's exclusive I think and the game was boring the first time, why would I replay it.

Still, Pro has a chance to redeem itself for me and my personal situation.  My regular PS4's remote play/wifi fucking SUCKS and I can't remote play games from like 30 feet away going from one bedroom to another.  This made me so frustrated since a lot of these rpgs I want to play in bed sometimes.  Supposedly Pro has better wifi and remote play.  I am hoping fingers crossed it boosts the signal enough that I can play in the next bedroom and enjoy Persona 5, FFXV and such in bed.  If it does this I will forgive everything else about it.  I will know in about an hour.

*edit* damnit, didn't fix remote play.  Looks like it's not the PS4, but my launch Vita has the worst wifi receiver ever and can't make it past 5-10 feet without skipping or dropping signal :(  Could probably fix it with one of those newer Vita 2.0s, but not worth buying a Vita entirely just for remote play :|

Also next "Pro" games I play are gonna be FFXV and Last Guardian.  Neither better run worse than normal PS4 or fuck Sony >:(

/kind of in an angry mood since the election if that sounds bitchy.

Tried out the FFXV demo.  Game looks quite nice on Pro HQ mode, but the frame pacing is insanely bad.  Feels like a 20fps Ubisoft game like AC Unity even though technically it's 30fps.  LQ mode feels mostly fine and normal locked 30fps, but since it's the same as normal PS4 there's zero benefit to PS4 Pro right now.  If they can fix the frame pacing on the HQ mode and unlock the framerate to get 60fps most of the time on LQ mode the Pro upgrade will be substantial.  Right now it's near worthless :|

You can do remote play on PCs and (rooted?) Android devices, too.  Don't have anything else you can use?

An update adding 4K and HDR support will be released alongside the game on November 29, but they want to release an update that has been optimized a bit more at a later date. They want to release another PlayStation 4 Pro update in December as well, which aims to implement support for 1080p at 60 frames per second on HDTVs. They’re currently at the tuning stage, but have it running roughly between 40 and 50 frames per second.

I would definitely wait until December to play it if I cared about this game and wanted a Pro.

So just wait.  Finish those other RPGs you're working on.

Chill beps its square enix they make one game every 10 years and you expect them to do good support? They dont know what they are doing

Western devs got this shit on lockdown, TR, BF, Titanfall, all mint on the Pro

But Western devs are on PC so it's meaningless if you have a gaming PC.

Ok, tried out the rest of the games I own that are Pro compatible:

Last of Us - Looks fantastic.  At 4k/30fps the visuals are insane and only barely can you still see the last generation roots (mostly character models), at 1800p/60fps feels great and still looks great.  Nice upgrade.
Uncharted 4 - Very nice upgrade on an already gorgeous game at 1440p/30fps and real 1080p/60fps for MP (this feels big compared to how blurry/soft I remember 900p MP being).  If they can get more mileage out of the Pro by the time the SP DLC campaign comes out, it'll be amazing
Infamous SS - Pretty good, wish 60fps mode could maintain because when it's 60fps it's great but too unstable and can't quite pull it off.  4k/30fps mode sure looks nice though.  I think I find unlocked unstable 60fps worse than 30fps even though that 60fps goodness is nice when you get it.
Knack - This sucks and I like the game.  The high frame rate mode is nowhere near 60fps on some of the stage I tried and feels really bad, the high definition mode looks nice but either this has frame pacing issues or is under 30fps because it feels like 25 fps.

Tried a bunch of non-patched PS4 games and they all seem to run fine, which is good.  Also loading is improved on all games because the hard drive is faster than the OG.  I read somewhere Bloodborne went from 31 seconds load in Central Yarhnam (was like 48 before the old patch to speed up loads) to 18 seconds with stock on both OG PS4 and PS4 Pro.  SSD doesn't add much and only brings that 18 seconds down to something like 15 seconds.

Have Ratchet lent out to a friend so will try that when I get it back.  It's suppose to look amazing.  Overall after trying more stuff, I'm moderately impressed and if they can just patch World of FF to fix the broken visuals I'll be satisfied.  Some games look a lot nicer, some games a little nicer, and some games you can tell the patch was just thrown together quickly.  I'm hoping once we get past winter and devs can plan for Pro version while in development we'll start seeing more polished nice looking, nice running Pro upgraded versions.

Also my plasma is older and doesn't support HDR.  People are raving HARD right now about HDR greatly visually improving all these games.  Tempting me to get a set that supports HDR at some point, but afaik there still isn't a really great replacement for the top quality plasmas in terms of image quality and black level.

One thing I'm really happy with the Pro that not a lot of people are talking about is the new Dual Shock 4 controller.  Seems like they fixed the 2 manufacturing issues with DS4, 1) The analog stick rubber wearing down and tearing off & 2) The L1 bumper sticking after a while, and on top of that it looks like they've doubled the battery life which is huge for me because I play a lot of rpgs and my DS4 would often not make it through a day of gaming (probably 5 hours) so I'd have to change to another controller.  I put about 10 hours+ into the Pro with the new DS4 before it gave me a low battery warning, so I think it's at least 10+

Anyhow, Ubisoft patched Watchdogs 2 so it runs the same on Pro at 4k.  I've been pretty happy with my Pro this week. all the non-Pro games seem to run fine, and the Pro games are look better and run just as good or better.  The only real issue right now for me is the fucked up broken World of FF that's unplayable on Pro.  SE better fix that shit.  Looks like it'd take 30 mins to patch a fix.  I hear Deus EX MD also runs like shit on Pro but also ran like shit on PS4 so who knows if they'll bother patching it.

What Sony really ought to do going forward is to have a STABILITY UPDATE firmware that adds a "run games in compatibility mode" option in the system options which would make even Pro-enabled PS4 games think you're on a normal PS4 and play that way.  This would fuckup-proof the Pro so all PS4 games will work on Pro no problem even if developers pull a World of FF and break the Pro version since you could just play the normal PS4 version on your Pro.

seems to me that Switch is becoming a Wii U port machine. What a shame.

Well, wrong thread (this thread is Ps4 Pro official thread), but even if Switch gets ports of every Wii U game ever, I've got no beef with that since nobody bought a Wii U and people might want to play some of the Wii U games.

in this case it makes sense cuz wii u sold so poorly not many people have one

if switch sells much more, it means people will be able to play games from a system they never owned

No it is a cheap way of filling up the library. Hey look we have no new gamez ready, buy our wii u shit again.

I don't have a Wii u and I want one for some of the games I missed. If I can play them without a Wii u I'd be happy. What's wrong with this?

I bought a PS4 Pro and a JRPG today.

Only thing to note is that if you're planning on playing World of FF on it, you need to delete the game and pause the update so it doesn't install the Pro patch because that screws up the game and SE hasn't fixed it (yet).
