Title: Things you never "got"
Post by: Stoney Mason on April 03, 2018, 01:21:56 AM
What were the little cultural phenomenons that passed you by?

This one is an oldie. I never got MTV's Pauley Shore's,  "the weasel" character. Like for about a year in popular culture everyone of a certain young age demographic thought this character was hilarious and then a year later everybody was over it but I never understand the initial appeal. It was a parody right? I mean he was doing like a surfer dude and was it funny because it was a parody or was it funny because the actual character was funny or how well people perceived he was the character?

Full confession never saw encino man or biodome. Some people seem to like those.... Was he still doing the character by then in those movies?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NTXx6Lo-qo

And since I did one MTV thing might as well do another.

Jackass.

This one seemed way more popular for much longer among a hipper crowd but once again never got it. I mean I like the three stooges and looney tunes cartoons but the violence in those are both fake and part of a structured piece of comedy with a setup, payoff, etc.

Jackass seemed like trashy people doing dangerous things to get hurt. I don't really like seeing real people getting hurt. And these people seemed like meth addicts to me. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they are all cool, terrific dudes but didn't they make like 5 movies or something out of this stuff? How is that possible?

Star Wars.

I mean, shit, yeah it's a good action adventure series (at least the OG series, never watched the new ones except Rogue One) but I never got why people lose their fucking minds over it.

Mel Brooks.  All of his films are horrendous and he has to be the most unfunny man who tricked people into thinking he's hilarious.   Space Balls is fucking torture to sit through, especially.

I get the enjoyment of them as entertainment since I'm a Star Wars fan but I don't get the over-analysis that goes into them like they are onions with extra hidden depth. They are nice popcorn entertainment. Interesting in how influential they were for movies and how to do world-building for franchises.

But analyzing them as the keys to the human soul has always been really weird to me. The Last Jedi might be the most over-analyzed piece of pop-culture of my life-time.

Anime

What don't you like about it? Serious question

I mean I get why people wouldn't like it, especially if they don't like animation in general but what aspect is a turnoff for you?

As far as Wrestling, I think its one of those things you had to have liked as a kid. You may still outgrow it and fall away from it, but if you never enjoyed the escapism aspect of it as a kid, you definitely won't get it as an adult. I don't think many 20 year old's who have never liked wrestling suddenly turn into wrestling fans. For those people, I understand that it probably looks like complete nonsensical garbage.  Even actual wrestling fans understand that most of it is garbage.

Not the same poster but i do have a dislike towards Anime.

The reasons for that are mostly that after i left high-school, Anime continued to stay there. Then there's also this moe pedo crap and fan service popping up in mature themes or settings. Even something praised as good usually has one of these at least.

Yeah I mean I hear ya. The popular stuff is always going to be aimed at a target audience that is way beneath my age but the good stuff still does tickle that part of my brain that is young at heart.

I mean the same could be said for hip-hop for instance. I mean I loved it when I was younger but the popular stuff isn't aimed at me so you outgrow the thing if you feel like not enough of it is aimed at the things that matter to you as an adult.

That being said, I think anime often isn't anymore childish than the marvel movies which people of all ages seem to devour.

I don't like animation that is trying to be cool or badass. I'll watch animation that is light and goofy.

Plus, my earliest introductions to anime were things like Dragonball Z, Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh.  Just dreadful shit that I then associated with all of it. That's unfair to anime, but that's just how it happened for me. Then in the early-00's more and more JRPGs became infected with it and turned me off more. So many garbage cutscenes.

I am ok with people liking gaming OST but it's the ones where that is all they listen to that weird me out.  :confused

On topic currently craft beer and Cardi B I guess. Maybe cilantro in general but that may be biological disposition.

There is a ton of stuff I don't get about pop culture in general. I have found on the other side of that, if EVERYONE thinks something is good, there is at least something in there where you can at least see where the value is, even if you don't like it. I tend to give most things a fair chance I think.

Being white (or any other ethnicity besides black I guess) and listening to most rap. Like, the lyrics don't apply to you. How are you not deeply uncomfortable or whatever singing along to or even enjoying a song that you almost certainly can't identify with? Or am I just a weirdo for feeling the need to be able to connect with the lyrics of a song on some level?

There are levels, but having to relate to something is kind of a you thing. Who cares if a song slaps? Do vocalists of other genders bug you if you can't 100% relate?

the majority of black people have the same relationship to the imagined daily regimes of south central Gs as white people do to power metal songs about slaying orcs.

music is about eliciting emotion and there's more ways to skin a cat than in a chinese liveleak video.

I would say the vast majority of popular hip hop anymore doesn’t really have much in it that is culturally specific. Like amigos is just party music with as much lyrical depth as a Britney Spears song.

But,  I also don’t understand why Migos are so popular. I just think they are not very talented or interesting in any way. Their beats are ok, I guess?

I think Cardi is also not amazing, but I actually think her lyrics and delivery are, on average, better than Migos. And at least I understand that she is basically the new Nicki Minaj.

Migos are a bit eh (and terrible live) but they get a pass on Stir Fry, that's a great tune. I think they got popular as their flow was "interesting." At least kinda catchy.

Cardi I just don't like much, can't put my finger on it. I wouldn't put her on Nicki's level whatsoever, more like a Lil Kim or even Bhad Bhabie.  :lol

I didn't say 100% relate though. Just that on SOME level, I feel the need to relate to the words being said. I can relate  to, say, a song about hob-knobbing with a bunch of stuck up people (http://"https://genius.com/The-divine-comedy-down-in-the-street-below-lyrics") while feeling out of place even though I've never been to a party like that in my life. I can at least see some version of myself in such an situation. By contrast, there is no part of me that I feel can relate to something like Nicki Minaj's Only (http://"https://genius.com/Nicki-minaj-only-lyrics") or Fuckin' Problems by Drake or something.

I don't know, it's just not how I talk, it's not how I act, it's not how I think. As a result, I don't ever connect with it and it feels foreign to me.

Cardi is vain as fuck, I haven't listened to her songs outside of her hits on the radio, but her songs are always about she's hot shit. Is that prevalent everywhere in hip hop? Sure. But I haven't heard a hip hop song on the radio where the artist says their own fucking name 8 times in the span of 30 seconds.

She is a fad and her hits are fucking trash. She isn't fun or witty with sucking her own clit, its simple braggery. The references she uses in her songs to other artists is also painful.

Oh, I agree. Nicki (or safaree) is much more clever and diverse lyrically than Cardi, but Cardi fills that same niche of “blah blah I’m rich now bitch and got a bomb pussy that all the niggy’s and nillas want, but they can’t afford me and my ass is way big af.”

I just would rather listen to her than offset and them.

I freely admit that I irrationally hate Migos. They fill the void that no limit and cash money left for me.

Beside the vernacular, some of the experiences these songs describe are pretty much the same in poor white-trash areas. Speaking from experience here.

Hell, my white-trash neighbourhood got gentrified a few years back. Most of the "bad" people are gone now, but the soul of the neighbourhood went along with them.

I don't understand the need to identify with someone or something either way. It feels narcissistic. "It needs to be about me for me to like it." I like hearing different perspectives.

I mean, it's not as if I'm listening to music and suddenly say, "Nope! I don't identify with this! I hate it!" It's more of an emotional reaction. I don't know. I can't explain it. Hence why I don't get it.
I don't really listen to music to be challenged mentally anyway. I never liked music from bands like Disturbed or Korn or whatever either because they were too dark and depressing lyrically for my tastes. I don't want to listen to music that makes me feel bad about myself either.

I don't get ASMR but I take the stance that's it harmless. It either does something for some people or it doesn't and even if I think it reaches into new age hokum, like I said its mostly harmless if its just people listening to free videos on youtube.

I do think there is also a sexual fetish thing going on with a portion of that community based on who often does those videos and often what that wear. That doesn't bother me either. You do you. But I also find that some people get a little offended when you mention that despite it sort of being pretty clear in my mind what is going on there.

That's what I'm saying- I don't get that shit either.  I'm not looking to get off from that shit.  So you gotta look for sound effects or "unintentional asmr" or you're just going to get search results that are fetishy crap.

Pokemon. I was in high school when it first came out so I was outside the target demographic and it just never interested me.

I "get" Pokemon but those games bored the hell out of me.  I grew to largely despise it working retail.  Not really from the games but from those fucking cards.  That shit was a nightmare.  Kids and creepy dudes alike spending hours in the store sifting through cards and playing that dumb game.  Couldn't stand it.

That reminds me of trading card games.  I don't get them.  I tried to learn Magic when it first got big in '93 or '94 or whenever and just found it dumb.

I played Magic around the same time frame in junior high. Probably 1994. We had fun with it, but once I got to high school and got a girlfriend I forgot all about it.

No it’s wearing stuff like Rick Owens bombers/sneakers, Neil barrett neoprene sweatshirts, and Alexander Wang (pause) tees, yohji yamamoto mainline or y-3 pants. nikes acceptable in limited situations. Mostly in black & white. Ofc normies have corrupted it and turned it into minimalist hot topic shit.

Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy black pair of jogging pants, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your body when you’re exercising. But what you don't know is that those pants are not just black, they aren’t dark charcoal. They’re not onyx. They're actually sable. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Rick Owens did a collection of sable cashmere athletic pants. And then I think it was Acronym... wasn't it who showed sable technofabric military jackets? And then sable quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that black represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the athletic wear that was selected for you by designers in this industry from a pile of stuff.

Disturbed and Korn are pretty much jokes in metal circles.

He took his chance and ran with it and seemed pretty novel in comparison to the other stiffs they had on the network (in hosting roles). Of course, Mtv got a big head and thought you could turn any distinguished mentally-challenged fellow into a star and we had to suffer through Jesse Camp for a few years.

Mitzi went out of her way to shit on Pauly and wouldn't even let him do sets at the Comedy Store.

Didn’t Pauly run the comedy store for a while? Or at least pretend to for a shitty reality show?

I always thought of Pauly Shore as being effectively for pre-teens, like most of MTV post 1987 or so. Like he’s not funny on any kind of adult standard, but occupies the same sort of space as Bill & Ted.

Speaking of 80s shit, I’m irrationally excited for Cobra Kai.

Pretty simple. Nirvana took a sound that was not mainstream and put a great melodic pivot on it. Mainstream people don't want to listen to Sonic Youth. The songs aren't catchy in remotely the same way.

Nirvana songs are catchy and sound good for normal people. This is pretty common in music circles. Take something from an edgy sub-genre and make a version that can appeal to the masses.

Note, this is not a quality argument. That being said, I was the perfect example of this. I don't listen to Sonic Youth. I understand why people do, but they don't do anything for me. I listened to the hell out of Nirvana.

Agreed as mtv took a lot of horrific people and for a short time made them stars ala Tila Tequila.

I don't think Pauley Shore is a horrible dude but that weasel character just was beyond me. Although I did like Bill & Ted's. That was a similar thing but actually funny to me.

I like to mix it up with oldskool game music, part of it is nostalgia (though lately I've been into a lot of X68000 FM synth, which I never owned back in the day), the other part is I like electronic music and the way the tracks sound.

I can dig that, early Sonic Youth is exhausting to hear and I don't think a lot of people would want to put the effort in to 'get' them. Something about Nirvana just kind of annoys me, even without the Sonic Youth connection though.

I don't understand obsessions with celebrities in general.  I won't judge on people mourning the deaths of celebrities.  With that said, while I like the work of many of them their deaths don't make me feel anything... but I really don't understand people interested in their marriages, personal lives or opinions on social/political issues.  Very rarely do I hear a celebrity discuss serious issues and come across well informed... even when I agree with the cause they're championing.  It's slightly less strange than watching videos of youtubers give their reactions to movie trailers.

I’m working through Oh, Sir… and Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4, Disney’s Fantasia on 360, Monaco on Mac, and an unfortunate addiction to DomiNations on iOS.

I can’t guess what you’re trying to prove with that question. Care to illuminate me?

To tell the truth, I think the bigger disconnect for me is that I didn’t play games during the Nintendo and Sega dominance era. I was planning on Apple ][ computers, and none of those are famous for their soundtracks.

I actually enjoy bitpop, so I guess I’m just feeling that without modification and out of its context, game soundtracks are like printing out a game screenshot and framing it as art.

Which, I guess I’d do for some games.

Hm.
Title: Re: Things you never "got"

Refering to videogame music as bit sounds is a weirdly outdated concept, except for nostalgia wanking indie games. And I suspect you're generally lacking the weeb games, e.g. the two most acclaimed soundtracks last year were Nier Automata and Persona 5. They are the opposite of bitpop. Not that I agree with the dismissal of older soundtracks either way.

Basically the 60s and early 70s were a really important period in the US. Current political alignments took shape then (Southern strategy/the McGovern coalition is the prototype of the modern Democratic Party), the affluent consumerist society emerged then, it was the beginning of the media-saturated postmodern culture that the Internet age is the culmination of. Also the last period of major social movements and widespread social unrest.

Oh yeah, I never got Nirvana either. I like Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth and a lot of the other bands that were associated with them (which was always a dumb superficial connection imo), but their music just bores me. Teen Spirit is a good song tho
Dino jr is way more boring than nirvana. Tho they don’t really sound alike or fit the same vibe.

I missed out on seeing Dino jr last year and was really bummed

I fucking do not understand the attraction of Metal Gear Solid. It's all just janky controls and half-assed AI.

In comparison to that time and place the controls weren't so bad. I mean think about Resident Evil.

The control deficiencies stood out more as the franchise went on.

As far as the AI, that never really bothered me relative to when it came out either.

I feel like the game did so much right and revolutionary at the time.

I have a lot less fond memories of the second game by comparison which most people seem to love now but for me felt so dumb storywise, that it was hard to stomach.

I think the third game controls pretty poorly also but the story is on the fun, correct side of dumb this time and that makes a big difference for me.

I really disagree with this. Post 60's boomers didn't shift the rhetoric of political discourse, but they were certainly marks for it. Lee Atwater is gonna be remembered for far longer than Abby Hoffman

also boomers were the leaders of the last period of social movements and widespead social unrest? gays may disagree

I don’t get posts that don’t involve Scott Steiner.
