I always thought the attempt of the anglosphere to create a label like minority or POC is dumb. It creates a monolith that just doesn't exist in real life. Using the same label for Mexicans and Indonesians for example always sounds weird to me.I prefer greater specificity too, but you have to refer to Mexican-Indonesians etc in some general way. Mixed is out, I think.

That or the wonderful Migrationshintergrund (migratory background), which is a pretty funny term in itself.
Most of the people in the US would actually go wild at the fact that I describe myself as culturally colored.
moist is a word that always either disgusting or erotic. I'm not sure it has a real place in normal conversation.
that's kinda sad, we 'ave a lot of stories to pass along and things to teach when it comes to dealing with racism. Most of the people in the US would actually go wild at the fact that I describe myself as culturally colored.
I'd ascribe that to a pervasive ignorance of South Africa here though.

Uh, you want a lot of food to be moist, not dry.

African American - the most lacking in mental fortitude PC phrase of all time. I’m not from Africa, I’ve never been to Africa. It also denotes race rather than continent. So someone like momo who is actually African wouldn’t be considered African American because he’s not black.I am black lol

I've mixed up my languages many times, it always sucks and it's really embarrassing when I make the mistake, but sometimes I think in English. It's extra confusing when in English you use brown for others, that we mostly just call based on their nationality/country. i.e an Indian isn't brown, he's just Indian.

I think we’ve covered this here before, but I will slap your tongue away from whatever anus it’s in if I EVER see ANY of you say “Latinx.”

I always thought "African-American" sounded like a weird thing to say, because you can't even guess who comes from there or not. Isn't it kind of a negative assumption?

What should I say? I personally don’t like black. It sounds mean, it’s an exaggeration. Brown is heard uncommonly, and I think I’ve only ever heard brown people say it, so I feel there’d be a risk using it.
Blockchain
If I see one more job posting using that fucking term I swear to god
brown is an acceptable way to refer to coloured and mixed race people here (many of us refer to ourselves as 'bruin mense' 'brown folk') much more so than black which is reserved for africans from the north (zulu. xhosa, sesotho, venda etc). I honestly dont feel like I fit into any of the groups apart from being generally black, my racial mixing has left me too white for brown/black people to fully accept me and too black to be generally white, one drop, white purity, etc.

Ngl whenever i fill out forms here I never circle black/african american I always put other. I come from an island bitch, we different.

Same here for "startup". I am getting so many job offers that are obviously sent out in bulk that basically read like this:
"We are a small startup looking for enthusiastic employees. Pay is gonna suck, but we are totally cool guys who got a pool table in our office and we like to drink beer after work."
Colonial rule was largely broken by labor groups, it's amazing the power a workforce has when the upper echelons of society gets a taste of what it would be like if the plebs told them to go fuck themselves. Of course it has negatives too as seen in England with workers vs Thatcher, tbh it's probably better the US doesnt have strong unions right now because with the Trump climate dumb stuff would likely happen, but I do hope US workers get some semblance of rights, collective bargaining power and for labor unions to become bigger parts of their political system someday.that's kinda sad, we 'ave a lot of stories to pass along and things to teach when it comes to dealing with racism. Most of the people in the US would actually go wild at the fact that I describe myself as culturally colored.

I agree.
Meant to say this in the Musk thread when we were talking about union power / rights in the two countries, but you have to keep in mind that one country actually ended colonial rule and the other just cut ties with the metropole.

It worked for us because no one would provide labor for the apartheid government except Israel, so the National Party was fucked. It continues to work for us because labor is a big part of the governing coalition so they bake protections into local industries preventing labor from being shopped overseas (too expensive due to tariffs etc) for certain key markets.

Early Industrialism very much resembled the feudal system of old.
Unions were able to rest some power away because the location of the workplace itself was once critical to the success of the business and owners lived in the same communities as their workers.
Once those factors diminished (and owners removed themselves out of the community where the work was being done) unions/workers lost whatever inherent leverage they had.
