Phrases, terms and words you're not a fan of
« on: August 03, 2018, 05:00:18 AM »
I've expressed this before but goddamn I hate "POC" being used to describe non-white races.

There's got to be better ways to describe non-white races than to use people of color. Hell, non-white races gets the job done. I never really minded minorities but I get that white people aren't the overwhelming majority in certain areas now. But people of color? A lot of the time it's used somewhat fetishistically by liberal white people and sounds like an odd hivemind grouping when used by any of the aforementioned "POC".

As a "POC" myself I kinda find it demeaning. Yeah yeah, "how resetera of you" but I don't care. I feel like the term itself sucks ass and I will complain about it.

POC to me is forever proof of concept.

Most of the people in the US would actually go wild at the fact that I describe myself as culturally colored.

Yeah, people of colour is a cumbersome term. No wonder it's abbreviated to POC. I get why non-white isn't used, because it could imply white as the default. Or why "coloured folk" is bad, but "people of colour" isn't (it puts their personhood/humanity first), but - meh.

Mine is "to be fair", as it's almost never about being fair.

I always thought the attempt of the anglosphere to create a label like minority or POC is dumb. It creates a monolith that just doesn't exist in real life. Using the same label for Mexicans and Indonesians for example always sounds weird to me.

I prefer greater specificity too, but you have to refer to Mexican-Indonesians etc in some general way. Mixed is out, I think.

That's true, I guess. German would just refer to these people as 'foreigners' which is at least just as dumb. Didn't think of that but, as an excuse, it feels like sitting in a sauna fully clothed here.

the fact that libtards don't realize how degrading it is for grown adults to be labeled something like "person of color" as if that's all they are is the best part. the constant babying of black people, and now women, like they have no agency whatsoever is also amazing.

Truth - especially as used by Catholics. Basically means,”only we are right, other perspectives don’t exist”. It’s also used to brainwash in a way of “we have truth, they don’t, you can’t join until you come to embrace the truth.”

"Non-white" is about as lacking in mental fortitude.

If you're going to lump every caucasian into one homogeneous "white" entity, then just do the same for other ethnicities instead of dancing around the topic.
So blacks, south asians, east asians, etc.

African American - the most distinguished mentally-challenged PC phrase of all time. I’m not from Africa, I’ve never been to Africa. It also denotes race rather than continent. So someone like momo who is actually African wouldn’t be considered African American because he’s not black.

Kinda off-topic but related: In Norway we use the term brown for black people, and if you say black for black people in Norwegian it sounds extremely racist. I've mixed up my languages many times, it always sucks and it's really embarrassing when I make the mistake, but sometimes I think in English. It's extra confusing when in English you use brown for others, that we mostly just call based on their nationality/country. i.e an Indian isn't brown, he's just Indian.

I always thought "African-American" sounded like a weird thing to say, because you can't even guess who comes from there or not. Isn't it kind of a negative assumption?

What should I say? I personally don’t like black. It sounds mean, it’s an exaggeration. Brown is heard uncommonly, and I think I’ve only ever heard brown people say it, so I feel there’d be a risk using it.

The race thing drives me crazy because brown is like what, I’m brown. That is my skin color. How are they brown and I’m not? And yet I’ve met Indians and Mexicans darker than me. I’ve just given up. :idont

And you’re right. How do you know the person isn’t from Jamaica or Colombia or Brazil? The term African American is so generalized to the point of being racist.

I prefer black. I’ve never met a black person offended by black. African American doesn’t offend me. Like, I won’t get my panties in a bunch about it. It’s more of a silent,”fuck” than anything else. Use what makes me you comfortable. I just think the phrasing of AA is dumb.

brown is an acceptable way to refer to coloured and mixed race people here (many of us refer to ourselves as 'bruin mense' 'brown folk') much more so than black which is reserved for africans from the north (zulu. xhosa, sesotho, venda etc). I honestly dont feel like I fit into any of the groups apart from being generally black, my racial mixing has left me too white for brown/black people to fully accept me and too black to be generally white, one drop, white purity, etc.

Same here for "startup". I am getting so many job offers that are obviously sent out in bulk that basically read like this:
"We are a small startup looking for enthusiastic employees. Pay is gonna suck, but we are totally cool guys who got a pool table in our office and we like to drink beer after work."
