So I saw Tim Rogers gave Dark Souls game of the decade and IGN gave Last of Us (weird choice and I love that game).

Which made me think, yeah feels pretty objective that Dark Souls 1 (2011) is the defining game of this decade considering how much game design it has influenced since. Even if it’s mostly an evolution from Demon Souls, it was Dark Souls that made the mark on gaming culture this decade.

Dark Souls is definitely the most influential game of the decade, for better or worse. Any "best" is entirely subjective but it's hard to argue the effect that game has had on game design. I'm not largely a fan (I do need to play more "souls like" games like Bloodborne and Sekiro, I'm told I'll probably enjoy those more) but at least this sort of game is less terrible overall than shit like Kojima "games."

DQ Builders 1 honorable mention I guess. Not certain in list at all but these are some big ones off top of head. Think they are all 2010+.

I think I agree with Dark Souls or Fortnite being general game of the decade even though I am not crazy about them.

I like the concept and philosophy behind Dark Souls much more than actually playing Dark Souls. I'm not that great at 3D action, or any game that requires both camera movement and regular movement in parallel, plus I like to play offensively in action games... so it just never clicked with me. I do appreciate that during a time when gaming was becoming increasingly casual, accessible, and westernized, a fairly obscure Japanese company came out and made a game that eschewed all that and made a punishing, challenging, and obtuse game.

I get Tim Rogers' choice there, although Demon's Souls was first and is from the previous decade.

I really enjoyed The Evil Within, rough around the edges but scratched my RE4 itch pretty good. Still haven't played the sequel though.

Well, technically, the first public release wasn't until mid-2009 and that was a very early alpha version. The proper, full release didn't come out until late 2011.

Bloodborne - Epitome of exploration based game design. Similar to Metroid Prime in the last decade, you simply know that you're playing the best the industry has to offer in level design, art direction, atmosphere, pacing, etc.

Virtue's Last Reward - You can do whaaat with videogame story telling? :o Apart from its inventive narration, it also has great mysteries in general. Imagine if LOST actually went well. It's a real shame that this is hard to recommend to casual players because of a few subpar animu designs.

Nier - Also unique in story telling, plus also in other things like (GOAT) soundtrack. It's something I keep thinking about, like Killer7 in the prior decade. Similar to that, the gameplay is controversial - although the critique is overblown imo, it's still a pretty good Zelda clone. Better than the second game.

Metal Gear Solid V - Look, open world doesn't have to be crap. No idea why so many other games got it backwards. This game does open world right, because it isn't faux-exploration/checklist based. It still has normal levels, for which the open world provides actual convincing freedom.

Super Mario 3D Land with 3D on/Astrobot - Mario was the first entry since NES with short but jampacked stages like Mario Bros. 3, which is good. But the 3D took it to another level. Astrobot is the evolution of that, making the level roam all around you, instead of just looking into it like into a box. Yet even though it seemed way superior, I only played the first world of Astrobot so far (lol @ buying VR), so I can't vouch fully.

Yakuza 0 - The most jolly game of the recent past is this one, screw your Kirby or Mario or whatever.

Mark of the Ninja - Ninja game actually making you feel like a ninja?? One of the few indie games being on top of the genre (stealth)?? Also, actual innovation in a 2D game these days??

Resident Evil 7/Remake 2/Revelations 2 - all great on their own, the king of gaming suspense if finally back after a decade of trash.

Shin Megami Tensei 4 - best JRPG series up until this point, though I think this might've been the last great one for a while. I'd pick Strange Journey over this, but I think in Japan it was released in 2009, even it seems to have been 2010 in the West, so...

Monster Hunter World - The series finally reached its true potential.

Rayman Legends - GOAT platformer controls. It came up with a lot of fresh ideas compared to most 2D platformer sequels these days too, including a fun online mode.

Cuphead - This is much more creative and its own thing than people give it credit for. Already finished it three times.

If Sony doesn't make a sequel, the PS5 will implode.  No game this past decade had me smiling all the way through like Astrobot did.

I was conesidering double dipping Evil Within on XB1 but I still need to get around to the sequel also. Evil Within on AKUMA mode was one of my favourite gaming experiences of the 10s

I've only played Astrobot for an hour or so but yeah, it felt like a true leap forward of interactivity and immersion and gaming. Haven't had my mind blown like that since I made the jump to 3d console games circa 1996

The 3D Mario's (except for that shit 3D World) are the best of the best in 3D platforming.  Haven't tried Odyssey just yet, but I see a bunch of folks still praising SMG2 as being better still...  Astrobot truly felt like what Mario 64 did back then.. Insane amount of potential and fun.

It's a rehash of 3D Land on a platform that was never meant for it. Which is why I felt Astrobot was the real successor to the former. Also it was another game that tried to fit exactly into that bland ass New Mario Bros. template for game progression, play style and art direction :yuck  From the series that spawned Mario 64 came... digital 8-way controls and mash-A-to-swim  :crazy
