Y: The Last Man is a post-apocalyptic storyline where a virus has killed every male on Earth, except one.  There's kind of like a female arms race to get him, because whomever has him has the ability to reproduce, create armies, etc.  There are super feminist factions that want him dead because they think Earth without man was meant to be.  It's pretty good.

The Walking Dead is another post-apocalyptic storyline that's pretty much like, "What happens to the world after the zombie apocalypse."  People begin to realize a future with the undead, try and live their lives, survive, etc.

I also have been reading Deus Ex Machina, which is about an engineer that due to a freak accident with supposed alien tech, gains the ability to talk to and control machines.  He tries his hand at saving the world in some dumb get-up, but after 9/11 (where he only saves one tower), he runs for mayor of New York City.  Now he's the mayor in a city that never sleeps and things gradually get stranger and stranger.

You can pick them up at a comic book shop, but they're also available in trades, meaning you can buy 'em on Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobles, probably.

There's also this made by him:

Quote
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The second volume of Drawn and Quarterly's ambitious reprinting of selected works by manga master Tatsumi picks up where the first left off. This outing once again showcases Tatsumi's pitch-perfect psychodramas, but this time with stories that are a bit more ambitious and sure-footed. Tatsumi more or less invented his own genre, making compelling manga out of everyday moments that otherwise pass unnoticed. His characters are anonymous faces we pass on the street, and he gives them an unsuspected inner life. In the opening story an artist for children's stories discovers a new, sinister vocation until he's found out. In another story a man is held captive by a woman who blames all men for her own psychological (and physical) scars. And in still another, an old man, once a proud business owner, returns to his derelict office day after day, despite the end of his company. Tatsumi lends all of these characters sympathetic voices through his minimal dialogue and deft line work. No one captures urban Japan quite like Tatsumi?even the streets feel nuanced. This collection of seminal work by a comics master is essential reading for anyone interested in the artistic development of the medium. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The stories in editor Tomine's second collection of this groundbreaking comics creator originally appeared in 1970, when Japan had recovered from the psychic setback of World War II and embarked on its "economic miracle." Tatsumi reveals, however, a segment of Japanese society that remained defeated, made up of weary, emasculated, working-class men, often paired with resentful women. In the title story, a frustrated truck driver taking care of his decrepit, demanding mother reaches his limit. In others, a disgraced businessman returns to his deserted office every day, long after the company has gone under, and a burned-out children's manga artist turns his talents to more disreputable pursuits. It's hard not to read an autobiographical element into that last one, related to the fact that Tatsumi combined the words for drama and art to coin a term, gekiga, for his work to set it apart from comics aimed at children. His powerful drawing style depicts the characters with a starkness and simplicity that matches what is presented of their lives and conjures a convincing urban milieu through detailed backdrops. These decades-old tales are unlike anything published in the U.S. before or since, and it's gratifying that America is now finally catching up with Tatsumi's genius. Gordon Flagg

comic books didn't break past that barrier like video games did
Title: Re: if you enjoy comics
Post by: Phoenix Dark on February 23, 2007, 10:37:04 AM
Actually they did. Comics are far more accepted by society than videogames, in part because they have already faced and defeated the challenges videogames still face today. In the 40's and 50's comics faced far more scrutiny, and from far more qualified critics - Dr. Fredric Wertham was pretty well respected in his day, far more than the walking joke that is Jack Thompson and Hillary Clinton too.

Many of the older comics were aimed at an older audience in the 1940's, although this changed in the 50's when the medium saw a total makeover (for the worse). In the 60's Stan Lee began making comics more realistic in terms of subject matter, and they appealed to an older audience as well as younger kids. Lee is heralded as one of the great comic creaters, but it's amazing that very few acknowledge the social impact of The X-Men, which was his answer to the racism he saw in American society - he created Xavier and Magneto after hearing Martin Luther King jr. and Malcolm X speak.

In the 70's comics began to break more ground in terms of mature content, and then things really got serious in the 80's. Today comics are pretty respected, at least when compared to videogames. Many of the people who read comics as kids are parents and politicians now, and it's not surprising why comics have seen little resistance by the generation currently in power. 20-30 years from now videogames biggest supporters will be in the generation in power, and gaming will face far less heat. Whether it's respected then will depend though, assuming gaming survives another decade.

Video games are way past comics.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 23, 2007, 11:04:22 AM
Uh, comics have never broken the "nerdy and juvenile" barrier.  You might write ten paragraphs about how it's older people that buy them and they have more mature content, but comics have never been able to shake that stigma.

Videogames are mainstream, comics are not.

Videogames get play on CNN and major news network.  The last comic book to make waves in the media was the Death of Superman, just because he is an American icon that most adults know through TV serials and movies.

He uses the fact that politicians and the media don't get in a uproar about violent comics makes them mainstream. I say that makes them NOT mainstream. The media freaks about about music, tv, movies still and now games. No one cares enough about comics to have the media attack them.

That's not even accurate.  The Comics Code was created specifically because comics were cited as violent and detrimental to society.  The only reason why the Code has been pretty much abandoned is because the core readers that stop by their local comic book store every week, children and socially awkward males in their late 20s, no longer face the raised eyebrows of their parental units given the fact we have interactive violence (GTA!) available for purchase.

Your reference was irrelevant.  Yes, I'm aware of Wertham.  And comics didn't defeat him.  They had to abide by the Code and faced scrutiny until the industry had become so small that it's irrelevant.  There was no victory.

Comics, moreso now than ever before, are for kids and socially awkward adults with disposable income.  There are your exceptions, but the industry is not mainstream.

It's dying too, because kids won't even read comics anymore.

The other part, and this is why videogames are mainstream and comic books are not, is that it's hard to justify spending $4 for a 27-page comic book (and you don't just buy one if you're a regular reader) to read colorful, fantasy stories when you have adult responsibilities like rent, family, etc.

It's far easier to justify the purchase of a videogame as an adult.  You get more for your dollar, and you can find a game that everyone can enjoy.  People don't really buy a comic book to share with others.  You're 32-years-old and you buy a Wii so your family can play Wii Tennis together.  You don't go out and buy the back catalog of 90s Ghost Rider prints so everyone can huddle around the fire and read tales of Johnny Blaze.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 23, 2007, 12:48:41 PM
Marvel came back briefly around the time of X-Men and Spider-Man making headway into theatres, with a smart business plan that accounted for their small reader base.  It was really smart.  They got new, fresh writers and artists (that were cheap!) that were talented, streamlined their selection by bringing the X-Men and Spidey books down to a very manageable size and pretty much threw away continuity so people could pick up any book.  They also got rid of crossovers and SE prints of the same book (four collectable covers omg!).

It brought the company out of bankruptcy, and ushered in a renaissance for Marvel.  They were also predicting the demise of the local comic book shop, and started converting their runs into trade paperbacks very, very quickly so people could buy them at places like Borders and Amazon.  Combined with the boost they were getting from their icons hitting the silver screen, it was a great turn around.  But it was a business model that understood that its reader base was small.

Then, in a matter of a couple of years - they threw pretty much the entire business model out the window.  They expanded both the X-Men and Spidey books.  Their fresh, new talent became hot, expensive talent, which meant bidding wars with D.C. Comics (which exists solely as a tax write off for Time Warner and a place to mine for cheap movie licenses).  They began to introduce old continuity into new books.  Mass, universe-wide crossovers began again.  SE, collectable covers followed suit.

Now, Marvel is just as bloated as it ever was, and questions why some of its runs suffer such bad sales.  Duh.  You can't spread your base so thin, when there are so few people that still buy 'em.

It's distinguished mentally-challenged.

I never said that. I said I felt they broke past the barrier in terms of having respect from more mature audiences, unlike videogames. Videogame sales are driven by the 18-32yr old demographic, but the majority of people over that age still think games are childish banter. People in their 40s are more receptive to comics because at one time they read them, and that was my point. I also said that comics have surpassed the problems with censorship and parental outrage that videogames still face.

I never said anything about their sales

There is no mature audience for them to respect.  Nobody respects comics, hence their lack of sales.

Willco: as an art form comics are more respected by the general public than videogames, which aren't even considered art by many. Whether that translates into sales is irrelevent. Comic sales/interest among 40 and 50 year olds aren't much lower than videogame sales/interest in the same demographic.
Title: Re: if you enjoy comics

Nobody considers comic books an art form (except kids and nerds who read them), especially folks in the 40s and 50s.  This is just a really dumb generalization that isn't supported by any facts whatsoever.  Sales are down, its reader base is down and comics are looked down upon as juvenile, just as they always have.

You really need to put this in perspective.  You would not tell a date you read comics, but telling her you play games is completely okay.  Bejeweled and all those dumb Internet games are huge with old people.  You could work for say, Nintendo and people would think that's a cool job.  Old folks too.  Tell them you work for Marvel... not so much.
Title: Re: if you enjoy comics
Post by: Cheebs on February 23, 2007, 12:58:37 PM
40-50 years are MUCH more likely to get caught up in a video game with the family than comic, no way around that.

The art question is useless. People don't think about that stuff. The average person probably thinks art = painting anyway.
