What's wrong with manga? it's more varied than the super hero oriented american comics. I personally can't stand reading comics if it stars a super hero. That shit is so played out.

Give me more Sin City and V for Vendetta please.

Y: The Last Man is a post-apocalyptic storyline where a virus has killed every male on Earth, except one.  There's kind of like a female arms race to get him, because whomever has him has the ability to reproduce, create armies, etc.  There are super feminist factions that want him dead because they think Earth without man was meant to be.  It's pretty good.

The Walking Dead is another post-apocalyptic storyline that's pretty much like, "What happens to the world after the zombie apocalypse."  People begin to realize a future with the undead, try and live their lives, survive, etc.

I also have been reading Deus Ex Machina, which is about an engineer that due to a freak accident with supposed alien tech, gains the ability to talk to and control machines.  He tries his hand at saving the world in some dumb get-up, but after 9/11 (where he only saves one tower), he runs for mayor of New York City.  Now he's the mayor in a city that never sleeps and things gradually get stranger and stranger.

You can pick them up at a comic book shop, but they're also available in trades, meaning you can buy 'em on Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobles, probably.

Lies.

There's also this made by him:

Abandon the Old in Tokyo. Similar format: short stories with similar themes.

Quote
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The second volume of Drawn and Quarterly's ambitious reprinting of selected works by manga master Tatsumi picks up where the first left off. This outing once again showcases Tatsumi's pitch-perfect psychodramas, but this time with stories that are a bit more ambitious and sure-footed. Tatsumi more or less invented his own genre, making compelling manga out of everyday moments that otherwise pass unnoticed. His characters are anonymous faces we pass on the street, and he gives them an unsuspected inner life. In the opening story an artist for children's stories discovers a new, sinister vocation until he's found out. In another story a man is held captive by a woman who blames all men for her own psychological (and physical) scars. And in still another, an old man, once a proud business owner, returns to his derelict office day after day, despite the end of his company. Tatsumi lends all of these characters sympathetic voices through his minimal dialogue and deft line work. No one captures urban Japan quite like Tatsumi?even the streets feel nuanced. This collection of seminal work by a comics master is essential reading for anyone interested in the artistic development of the medium. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The stories in editor Tomine's second collection of this groundbreaking comics creator originally appeared in 1970, when Japan had recovered from the psychic setback of World War II and embarked on its "economic miracle." Tatsumi reveals, however, a segment of Japanese society that remained defeated, made up of weary, emasculated, working-class men, often paired with resentful women. In the title story, a frustrated truck driver taking care of his decrepit, demanding mother reaches his limit. In others, a disgraced businessman returns to his deserted office every day, long after the company has gone under, and a burned-out children's manga artist turns his talents to more disreputable pursuits. It's hard not to read an autobiographical element into that last one, related to the fact that Tatsumi combined the words for drama and art to coin a term, gekiga, for his work to set it apart from comics aimed at children. His powerful drawing style depicts the characters with a starkness and simplicity that matches what is presented of their lives and conjures a convincing urban milieu through detailed backdrops. These decades-old tales are unlike anything published in the U.S. before or since, and it's gratifying that America is now finally catching up with Tatsumi's genius. Gordon Flagg

Actually they did. Comics are far more accepted by society than videogames, in part because they have already faced and defeated the challenges videogames still face today. In the 40's and 50's comics faced far more scrutiny, and from far more qualified critics - Dr. Fredric Wertham was pretty well respected in his day, far more than the walking joke that is Jack Thompson and Hillary Clinton too.

Many of the older comics were aimed at an older audience in the 1940's, although this changed in the 50's when the medium saw a total makeover (for the worse). In the 60's Stan Lee began making comics more realistic in terms of subject matter, and they appealed to an older audience as well as younger kids. Lee is heralded as one of the great comic creaters, but it's amazing that very few acknowledge the social impact of The X-Men, which was his answer to the racism he saw in American society - he created Xavier and Magneto after hearing Martin Luther King jr. and Malcolm X speak.

In the 70's comics began to break more ground in terms of mature content, and then things really got serious in the 80's. Today comics are pretty respected, at least when compared to videogames. Many of the people who read comics as kids are parents and politicians now, and it's not surprising why comics have seen little resistance by the generation currently in power. 20-30 years from now videogames biggest supporters will be in the generation in power, and gaming will face far less heat. Whether it's respected then will depend though, assuming gaming survives another decade.

Uh, comics have never broken the "nerdy and juvenile" barrier.  You might write ten paragraphs about how it's older people that buy them and they have more mature content, but comics have never been able to shake that stigma.

Videogames are mainstream, comics are not.

Videogames get play on CNN and major news network.  The last comic book to make waves in the media was the Death of Superman, just because he is an American icon that most adults know through TV serials and movies.

He uses the fact that politicians and the media don't get in a uproar about violent comics makes them mainstream. I say that makes them NOT mainstream. The media freaks about about music, tv, movies still and now games. No one cares enough about comics to have the media attack them.
