Nothing. I'd just wait for it to come out on VHS and watch it. I'd probably be more disappointed though, because I'd see all that hype first hand and then see the movie didn't deserve any of it

I still can't believe you didn't understand that movie.  Even the slightest knowledge of American history and the Western genre is all that's needed to comprehend the film's themes.

You have absolutely no eye for subtlety.  I pity you.

Err, an example of what?  Look, man, Unforgiven is about the whitewashing of America's frontier history and western expansionism and tearing down the violent, heroic myths that arose from that period in the form of the traditional Western film.

That's all well and good but it doesn't excuse the movie's flaws. I know enough about American history to tell you yes, that was indeed a savage period in the US - yet that's not even portrayed in the movie. Instead we get a pussy ass sherriff and a town that lets a black guy fuck prostitutes (as if that would EVER happen in 1880). So please, don't talk to me about American history.

What was the relevence of Eastwood repeating the same lines over and over again? I must be too ignorant to understand why he had to tell the audience "no, I used to be a no good dirty son of a bitch killer back in the day but my...wife straightened me out" every ten minutes?

Pussy ass sheriff?  Did you want Little Bill to be a TOTAL BADASS?  That's not what the movie is about.  In real life, there are shades of gray.  Little Bill isn't a character type, he's a human being.  He's not portrayed as being this evil monster, because he's not.  He's just an old killer trying to retire and live out his life in peace and quiet.

What was the relevence of Eastwood repeating the same lines over and over again? I must be too ignorant to understand why he had to tell the audience "no, I used to be a no good dirty son of a bitch killer back in the day but my...wife straightened me out" every ten minutes?

Jesus H. Christ.  :lol

Don't you get the meaning behind the repetition?  He's a bad man who's trying to convince himself that he's reformed and that he's no longer violent and out-of-control.  He's basically repeating a lie and trying to make it true.  He desperately wants to believe (and wants others to reassure him) that he's a moral man, especially because he's getting older and death is getting closer.  Look at how quickly he decides to take the job to murder a man, and recruits the Morgan Freeman character.

Eastwood's character was beyond bland and pretentious. It's not like the first reformed killer to be presented in a Western; his constant sermons on being a new man could have been handled so much better, and with much more...subtlety

he's NOT a reformed killer -- he *is* a killer. his "sermons" are LIES. there are no heroes in the movie -- everyone is evil, and the man who lies to himself the most is the worst of them all. the movie is about contradictions. you want to hate little bill because he's set up as the villain and you want to cheer for clint eastwood because he's clint, but in the end, clint's the one with the dead soul and little bill's just another corpse in his wake.

I never said he was a hero. If anything it seemed like his wife was able to tame him, but it just took a traumatic loss for him to just snap.

PD, plz read both these quotes a few times and try to understand the character of William Munny.  It's obvious that you didn't get what Eastwood was doing in presenting his protagonist.

Eastwood's character is neither hero nor anti-hero.  Hell, you can look at him as being the villain of the piece, basically coming into a town, disrupting its peace and killing its sheriff.  When he rides off, the women aren't looking at him in awe and gratitude.  They're shocked and horrified after they've finally realized the events they set in motion by hiring a killer.

he wasn't tamed. he knew what he was getting into, and he wanted to do it, despite his pleas to the audience. he was a bad, merciless man, and we only liked him because the movie taught us to side with vengeful prostitutes and greedy hired guns. it was a great performance from clint.

if he convinced you he was tamed, pd, then he did a great job, because that's what the role was supposed to do: make you forgive a psychopath until his nature is fully revealed. if we hadn't believed him, the ending would have been meaningless.

Exactly.  If they had reversed the roles, and Eastwood had been playing the sheriff and the story was told from his perspective, we'd be cheering for the sheriff and horrified when the drunk gunman massacres everyone in the saloon.

There's a reason the movie's so acclaimed, PD.  It deconstructs the western and plays with all its genre elements.  I love Leone's movies more, but Unforgiven is the deeper film.

the movie gives us some nicely placed sympathetic moments for little bill, too: his clumsy carpentry, his friendships, and his moments of weird pathos for the bloodthirsty whores despite how their feud was destroying the peace. he could easily have been a hero in a tough place in a different western.

oh, i liked it too -- i didn't even mind sharon stone, although she was too "pretty" for the role. the gal who played calamity jane in deadwood woulda been perfect. (that was one of the few convincing "female badass" roles i've seen not portrayed by sigourney weaver.) it's probably my favorite sam raimi film, for sure, but there's no denying that it's about as deep as phoenixdark's cinematic credentials.

What movies would you qualify as masterpieces, O Man of No Taste?

Why, so you can "critique" them? Go ahead and troll them; considering I'm trolling this thread I won't get upset if you do (this applies more to Drinky than you of course)

Masterpieces in terms of being movies I'd give a 10/10? Well my favorite movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. Also, Imitation of Life is my second or third favorite movie. Personally I feel both are perfect, and far from run of the mill movies. Especially Imitation of Life because it touches on so many social issues that are still being debated over today.

Then there are movies that are perfect in other ways. For instance, I think Raiders is masterfully paced. I wouldn't call it a "perfect" movie, but with respect to its pacing (among other things) it's a masterpiece. Another example: from a technical perspective I find a movie like Goodfellas to be masterful. Recently Children of Men really impressed me in this regard, for the cinematography. But of course I wouldn't consider either movie to be "pefect" in full

Oh please. Why would I bash a movie I was quite excited to watch? Before watching it I expressed that I was looking forward to seeing it. I watched The Prestige first before I thought it would be the worse movie out of the three I rented; I was dead wrong about the Prestige, as I really loved it. I loved Children of Men as well.

the fact that you missed most of the major themes of the movie -- themes that are quite unambiguous and well-framed, much like the prestige -- lends a little more credence to the idea that you were predisposed toward bashing the movie.

I bet PD never imagined the shitstorm his Unforgiven review would create.  He needs to print out that review, frame it, and put it up on his bedroom wall.

Willco has stated on several occasions that he can't vouch for Spider-Man 3's quality because there have been too many red flags.

Not for this one.  Too many things have gone awry.  This reeks of Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad demanding Venom, a character Raimi swore up and down he'd never introduce during his tour as Spidey show runner.  Equal blame will be put on Raimi, for letting his ego think he could handle such studio demands and make a cohesive picture ("I'm Sam Raimi, I can do anything!").

It's hard to keep doing a smash-hit franchise with the same cast and crew in separate installments.  By the third one, the franchise is full of ego and excess.  I think this may be the case here.

That said, I'll see it opening day.

Do you think it would be better if he'd stuck with just one villain, or was the movie just destined to flop?  Seems like no superhero franchise can reach a third film without crashing and burning.  I think he had to stuff in so many bad guys as a sop to the toy manufacturers, so they can sell Sandman, Radical Goblin, Black Spider-Man, and Venom toys.

I still plan to see it.  Spider-Man 2 is one of my all-time favorite superhero movies, along with Darkman and Unbreakable.

I think the original intention was probably Harry as a Goblin and another villain, like The Lizard.  The Sandman doesn't surprise me and my guess is that he's not the heartless, write-in killer of Uncle Ben as he's claimed.

I wonder if the outline that's been presented so far is accurate.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Harry and Spidey teaming up to take down Venom and Sandman, Harry dying, Venom dying but the symbiote surviving, etc.
