futami...holy crap
« on: June 28, 2007, 02:28:23 PM »
living in a world of absolutes, where the impact of slavery is mitigated by absence of any actual slaves, is just as bad as putting a sheet over your head and walking around with the confederate flag.

acting like a white american and black american are on equal footing, without giving any consideration to the historic inequity that divided the two, is racist.

You post to my thread where I define racism and yet he claims that he has a new definition or racism.

Again look at the defition of racism and then look what he said. It's not racist at all.

Yeah, even though I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, I have to respect a guy who's not afraid to show his opinion (as long as they don't have any malicious intent about it, which I don't think futami does).

No futami actually made a good point.

no he didn't.  He seems to think that forgiving is equivalent to forgetting.  I imagine a parallel to his argument in a dialog between an old married couple as they drive past a jewelry store.

[wife]  ALBERT!  remember that time you slept with your secretary?
[Husband]  That was fifteen years ago!  I've said I'm sorry a thousand times.
[Wife]  Well it changes things.  I see that look when you look at me.  Like I'm not beautiful, like I'm disgusting to you.  We can't possibly be equal after that!  Now buy me some jewelry and I'll forget about it...for a while.

See Futami your using your own history to create a gap between whites and blacks.  We as a race were wrong but constantly thinking like we owe you something will only drive the gap, because there is nothing we could ever do to make it right.  At some point you have to forgive us and move on.

You really can't credit too much courage to someone based on their willingness to have opinions in an online forum.

I'll give anyone bonus points for taking a few pokes at FoC, but let's not start handing out medals or anything.

This is not about forgiveness, this is about the effects of slavery and being without real rights until 40 years ago. Everything is not going to be fixed over night, and everything STILL isn't fixed. The whites who act like things are just fine and dandy are ignorant fools.

Nobody is acting like things are fine and dandy. it's just not other peoples resonsilbities to give you a boost up. You have to take it for yourselves.

You can bitch and moan all you want about something that happened 150 years ago, or you can do something about  it and better yourself.

What the fuck? How is it possible for people to try and do things better for themselves when their education is unsatisfactory, their living situations are unsatisfactory, they have no basic idea of what family is because their ancestors had their family taken away from them (hence the abnormally high rate for black males to desert their nests), people had to live in the ghetto 100 years ago, and it was pretty hard to escape. It's a continuous cycle.

I'm pretty fortunate, and blessed to be in my position. I'm not bitching at all. I'm just saying you're an idiot.

It's hard to do better for yourself, when there's little support to help you to begin with.

i never said you owe me anything.

i said that there needs to be an understanding WHY blacks, generally speaking, underperform in an academic setting; why blacks are disproportionately represented in the prison system; why the black community is crippled by poverty.

Family life, or lack thereof.  If you're told you won't succeed in life, chances are you won't.  This goes for anybody but it's rampant in the black community, along with single moms.  When I worked at staples in Mt. Vernon (da hood nicca)  the amount of single moms shocked me.  Really brought me to reality (coming from the burbs).

I'm curious as to your feelings with how black culture is protrayed here in USA. I find it pretty interesting that all we ever hear and see through the media is the extremes in the black culture. We get a good dose of the uber-rich such as sport stars and entertainers...or we get images of poverty. It has taken awhile (maybe a bit too long at that), but there is a signifcant rise the middle class which seems to be censored or at least muted in to the eyes and ears of American media.

Personally, I would like to hear more opinions and views from the middle-class black americans. I think once they are put more to the forefront. The benefits of education and the hope of making the "American Dream" a possiblity will do a world of good.

Acting like black and white people are on equal footing is not necessarily racist.  You could actually believe that they are on equal footing, in which case you would simply be ignorant and uninformed.

Or one could be acting like blacks and whites are on equal footing in order to create a false sense of equality.  A grade school teacher isn't going to tell the black students that they are underprivileged because the teacher wants the black students to perform to the best of their ability regardless of the group they belong to.

I personally don't act as if blacks and whites are on equal footing, but there are cases when doing so is not racist.

imo, ignoring the deleterious repercussions slavery has had on future generations of blacks, is borderline racism.

oh, we're all equal.

slavery was how long ago?

come on, you guys have just as much opportunity as a poor white guy.

just work hard and the american dream is yours!

stop whining.

it's delusional bullshit that certain whites, out of a need to absolve themselves of the obvious, have convinced themselves of.

------------

imo, a poor white guy has a much easier time in the united states of america than a middle class black guy.

i've observed that fact.

I agree that they aren't on equal footing.

To say that all people who act as if they are, are racist, is not valid.

Would someone from another country who assumes blacks and whites are on equal footing in America, and acted accordingly, be racist?

No, as they aren't acting that way to absolve themselves of guilt, or perpetrate a myth.  They are just unaware of the fact that they are not on equal footing.

Someone who comes from another country does not count. We are talking whites that have lived in America their whole life. In fact, an immigrant isn't even considered a US citizen. So it's not like they even fall into the same camp as the white man.

Ok, then a small child in America who genuinely believes that blacks on whites are on equal footing is not racist.

I have no agenda here.  I agree that most of the people who act as if blacks and whites are on equal footing do so to absolve themselves of guilt, or perpetrate a myth.

I am just saying that it is possible for a person to act as if things are equal and not be racist, and that futami's original statement was not true.  It was a blanket statement.

I tried to make this point in a few of the Affirmative Action threads on GAF. Many would suspect me to be against AA, but I wholeheartedly support it. In fact, it needs to be around equal to the amount of years that slavery existed on this continent.

In fact, it's sort of unfair that other minorities benefit from these rules. It really should just be people of African origin (with ancestry from that era). What slavery did to their people is immeasureable. There is no "quick fix" for it (40 acres and a mule) ... its something that only time and measured assistance can rectify.

wtf

Noone past 20 or so should think it's black vs white when it's really rich vs poor.  Paris and OJ both get off easy.  It's nothing to do with race.  It's having the resources.  Go to a redneck ghetto and tell me the offspring there have an equal chance as gated community children. Poor establishes a financial disadvantage and a culture of low expectations.  Applying skin tone to the discussion is the racism.

ehhhhh, I dont support extremes. I think there's a lot to do with race, but I think it also depends where you live, your family structure. There's a lot of elements that must be overcome, some of these are universal to all races.

Taking the extreme position that it ALL has to do with race makes it a crutch. Its as if youre throwing your hands in the air, or having a tantrum in the airport because your mom won't buy you a lolli.
