I don't understand the title of this book
« on: June 28, 2007, 04:04:03 PM »
While skimming through Matthew Yglesia's blog I learned that Jonah Goldberg has changed the subtitle of his upcoming book. It used to have an idiotic name,Liberal Fascism: The Totalitarian Temptation from Mussolini to Hillary Clinton. Clearly, that was a stupid title befitting Ann Coulter's next book and so needed to be changed. He changed it to Liberal Fascism: The Totalitarian Temptation from Hegel to Whole Foods. I like the dig at Hegel (Popper beat him to the punch) but what the hell is so fascist about Whole Foods? Can one even be a liberal fascist (not leftist)?

Plus, as Yglesias and others are pointing out, Whole Foods is a pretty anti-union company, founded by a libertarian.

Why does Goldberg even have his job, outside of who his mommy is?

How do you take attention away from accusations or insinuations your own camp is facing? Accuse the other side of the same!

Now I see why you couldn't get a high enough score on the LSAT.

Yes that was a badly written post. However the essay isn't scored. Only the multiple choice questions are.  So your joke makes no sense.

That title won't sell.

What the hell was I doing reading Matthew Yglesia's blog?

Sorry, Malek. The internet is such a corruptive force.  I don't even know why I've become so mean.   :-\

Interesting.

Basically the strategy is just to make the essay look as long as possible, the more pages the better, even if it makes little sense since it is almost never read by anyone.

my favorite bit is that Joe McCarthy was a populist demagogue, and there were once prominent left-leaning populist movements, therefore McCarthy was really a liberal.  since nearly any political/ideological configuration you can think of existed at some point in history (you can find left/right + rationalist, left/right + organicist, left/right + populist, left/right + elitist etc etc) this form of connection seems universally applicable but then I guess this:

Quote
Regardless, I agree with David that populism is a useful and healthy passion when aimed at the liberal elite. But conservatives can get drunk on it when they proclaim that elites are bad simply because they are elites. Conservatives respect authority — the authority of ideas, traditions, morals, religion, customs, reason, law, excellence and so on. One cannot believe in this kind of authority while having a blanket hostility to elitism in any form.

goes a long way towards delimiting its scope.

Historically for the past 100 years the left has been trying push more and more socialism on to the country so it's a title with some truth.

A sneak preview, with chapter titles.

It's funny, if legit.

Good stuff. I'll probably pick this book up.
