lower cost healthcare would only be possible if there was lower cost medical school.  Which is possible but medical school's in the U.S. are greedy.  It's not at all impossible for the government to pay for the materials but the services are what keep U.S.'s healthcare so obscenely expensive.

I'm saying you could keep them (I don't know how differently they work in countries with universal healthcare) and still make healthcare much more affordable.

The problem is insurance companies who must provide their stock holders with a higher profit margin every year. It's not enough to make a profit every year, but it has to increase! Which ultimately treats their "customers" with no respect.

It's not only medical schools that are obscenely expensive, but all institutions of higher education. You can probably go just as a far into dept getting an MD license as you can getting a PhD in literature.

average medical school cost is about $100,000 in the U.S. but you can graduate from med school in europe with no debt.
