you are not a man until you've seen vic mackey upscaled at 1080i, pounding a wetback's face into a dumpster in FULL HD GLORY.

1080i isn't even full hd lol

What are the brands I should look at when looking for an hdtv? I know Samsung is one of the preferred choices.

Pioneer... fantastic quality TVs but a bit pricey. My PDP-4271HD is absolutely incredible... great HD picture, and low-res looks fantastic.

I have a 32 inch tv from 1987.  It was BAD ASS in 1987 though  :maf

Three component inputs, all on separate video channels.  Umm, that's it.

I think it's been struck by lightening at least twice, it had a couple of weeks where it just refused to work, but for the most part it's stood tough.

However, it's eternally dark now, when I watch an NBA game it's like 10 black guys, no idea who is who.  When I play Zelda TP on my Wii, it's unplayable in a cave, and the brightness meter at the beginning both the first two squares are the same color.

Needless to say I'm very much looking forward to getting my hdtv this month or next.

fuck no don't get a Pioneer TV or any plasma, these shit displays NEVER have even a native 720p resolution, even if they're advertised "720p" or "1080p" their native resolution is like 1024 x 768... what a goddamn rip-off

either a Sharp, Sony or Samsung LCD on sale... preferably in 1080p so that it's future-proof for a few years down the line

no point in 1080p.  Just get a new tv 5-6 years from now.  You'll need a pretty big tv to see the difference if you had good eyes for this sort of thing (enthusiasts say 40"+) and even then there's only HD movies you can see at that res.

the price difference is getting thinner and thinner by the day

and 360/PS3 games upscaled to 1080p don't look any uglier

so it's worth it to get one, there are console games right now to take advantage of that (even COD4 for PS3 and 360 this winter), and they can display the native resolution for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs

SO worth it - why cheap out esspcially if a better TV is just a couple of hundred away?

Look at this week's ads, and look at specialty stores, that's the best you're gonna do. Go look at TVs yourself. Do some research, write down the model numbers of the TVs that stand out to you the most.

fuck no don't get a Pioneer TV or any plasma,
interesting - i was looking at the Pioneer elites last night in Yodobashi and they took a big fat dump on anything else.

The Bravias are fairly nice too :/

hmmm...

They can have a very nice picture quality, never denied that. But their native resolution is basically always inferior to 720p! They advertised that they are "720p" or "1080p" compatible when it's simply that they downconvert these signals to their low resolution of 1024 x 768 or whatever!

At least with a Bravia you get authentic resolutions. Top grade LCDs have really improved a whole lot when it comes to blacks, colors and contrast ratio.
