Just picked up the Viewsonic N4280P at Burnaby BC Costco (no display units) - they had 4 left by the time I left at 12pm. Couldn't find any information on the internet on this unit. Has 2 HDMI, 2 component & 1 VGA 1080P. Haven't had a chance to set it up properly yet.

People who got 720p sets recently are going to bite their fingers in the coming months.

Viewsonic is generally a well-regarded brand, although the panel used in that one is definitely of chinese origin. It's probably the same that's used in the White-Westinghouse set that has the same specs. Still, that's good value for the money.

Other brands like Sony, Sharp and Samsung offer superior picture quality for a few hundred dollars more, but if you're a deadbeat college student then it can be a good offer.

Viewsonic isn't bad, they've been in the biz a while. Most certainly not one of those fly-by-night brands Wal-Mart pushes.

But it and Chinese Wal-Mart brands probably share some of the same panels.

Also, this set is manufactured by Viewsonic strictly for Costco Canada, it won't ever be distributed in any other type of store.

Thats why I bought a Samsung, I always buy Samsung. My EDTV from them was omg, and my current HDTV LCD is omg

eh, I HATE Samsung LCDs

they have some sort of proprietary image enhancement technology that you can't turn off (DNIe?), and I hate the effect it does on an HDTV's picture

With enough fidgeting you can pretty much nullify the effects, but I agree not being able to turn it off is kinda lame.

uh, do you have a re-edition of Avia done to accomodate HD sets?

also, did you try to play PS2 games in component on your Sharp?

Damn, the thread says that Costco is beginning to roll out an HDTV that's an Akai 52" 1080p LCD for cheap. Now that's cool.

some duder isn't too pleased with what he saw of the Viewsonic, it seems... :(

It's cheap for a reason

I played around with this set today at Costco for about 15 minutes. It was connected to a decent HD feed. After trying every pre-setting and my own settings, I was still not satisfied. The contrast is terrible and the image is downright blurry. It didn't hold a candle to the 42" Sharp next to it, and the plasmas nearby destroyed it, even the cheap Akai's.

I would say that unless you are using this with a PC setup, avoid it. Contrast and colour saturation are far more important to creating a pleasing image than resolution, even when using HD sources. I know this is an argument that could go on forever between plasma and LCD purists, I'm just going by what my eyes tell me, so please don't assume I'm trashing LCD's. I actually prefer them for many applications.
