I really dug Shaun of the Dead.  It's the most impressive film of its kind since the 80s and the best mix of horror and comedy elements since Landis' An American Werewolf in London.  That said, when it comes down to it, it's just a really, really good genre movie.

Hot Fuzz is just an excellent movie all around.  It's probably one of the most clever scripts I've seen come together in recent years.  It's tough for any film to play for laughs, especially one that plays so close to its buddy cop and action roots (which are usually comedies to begin with), but to do in the way Wright and Pegg did is just mind blowing.  There's not a legit action sequence until all of the last twenty minutes, but they manage to craft an excellent character driven piece for the majority of the film.  And unlike Shaun of the Dead, which relied heavily on sight gags, Hot Fuzz is a master work of dialogue, timing and delivery.  Wright moves the story along with clever writing and really, really likable characters for most of the movie, which is a feat that most serious action films fail at completely.

And whereas at the end of Shaun of the Dead, I was completely satisfied but not really salivating over a sequel - I want to see more adventures for Angel, Butterman and the rest of Sanford.  The supporting cast is excellent; they could make a movie based on the Andy's alone.  It's a gigantic step forward for everyone involved over Shaun of the Dead, where only Shaun and Ed were interesting and a couple of the characters were just downright obnoxious.

In a summer where you constantly have to compromise to enjoy American popcorn flicks (especially action films), it's just a pleasant surprise to see one that fires on all cylinders and doesn't play (completely) to the lowest common denominator.  Edgar Wright continues to grow as a filmmaker, and the Wright/Pegg/Frost combination is a winning formula that I hope to see continue before ego and rising fame get in the way.

Hot Fuzz is EASILY better than Shaun of the Dead and yes, it is indeed the best film of the year so far.

Haha, I haven't seen Transformers, no have held it in high acclaim!  Despite my penchant for seeing big, dumb blockbusters, I rarely propel them to my cream of the crop.  It's just that I, like Ebert, grade films for what they're trying to do and whether or not they hit that mark.

I can enjoy big, loud cinema if it's trying to be big, loud cinema.  If you're trying to sell me some ice in Alaska, then we have problems.

so do i, but i couldn't imagine EVER enjoying transformers. it's too fundamentally distinguished mentally-challenged a concept to play straight. michael bay is just the stale mayonnaise on the turd sandwich.

From all accounts - it doesn't play it straight.  If it does, I'll be sorely disappointed, but Ebert says it revels in its cheese and completely ridiculous concept.  If so, then I can really dig that.

I'm no Bay fan either, save for maybe The Rock (solid action flick), but the guy can shoot action.  And in a film where the premise is giant robots blowing shit up, I think he might be the man for the job.

as i told tvc, the only way to make a transformers movie not suck is to make it a mockumentary about a bunch of fat nostalgia-addled manchildren trying to get a deal to make a movie about "robots that turn into freight trucks and cars and tape recorders and guns, man! it'll be awesome!" and then spends 1 hr 40min skewering the fuck out of them.

Edgar and Nick are gonna be at San Diego ComicCon for a signing on the 27th.

Edgar has also said he would be staying in LA for the Summer, don't know what he meant by it, though.

Is there no part of your soul, maybe a previously thought to be deceased childhood entity that dwells within you, that can enjoy giant robots tearing the shit out of each other?

Also, the animated movie is bad - folks claiming it as high cinema and a masterpiece of character development are insane.

Isn't Edgar working on Ant-Man, demi?

sure, but not "transformers" -- they're one of those things are so tragic in their gimmicky toy design that i prefer to leave them embedded deep within my childhood nostalgia, ensconced and crystalline.

Somehow, the way that is phrased, reminds me of that sorcerer in the mirror room within the ice castle in Conan the Destroyer.

Yes, he is working on Ant-Man and other films, but it's unsure what he's actually working on at this moment.

Simon and Nick's new (written by them) film is going to be filmed in the states, but not directed by Edgar. Details are non-existant, but they are supposed to start filming around the end of the year.

Maybe. But I was thinking more like a vacation, or business related such as Ant-Man or whatever else.

It's tough material to tackle.

Either it'll be good or a trainwreck.  I don't think there's much of a middle ground here.  As a high-budget spandex flick, it's Edgar's first real test.  Let's see what he's made out of.

The UK DVD has one of Wright's first films -- Dead Right. Think it got cut from the US one, though.
