Should kids be allowed to wear life jackets in the pool?
« on: July 05, 2007, 02:23:12 PM »
Recently my town banned it, saying that kids who always wear life jackets won't learn to swim, so it caused an uproar and now people are going around asking people to sign a petition against it, heck, I was asked to sign it just 5 minutes ago (which I did), what do you think?

uh what about small children? Why would they be able to swim in a deep pool without one?

the purpose of a pool for many people is not to SWIM but to COOL OFF and PLAY IN THE WATER. on top of that, some parents are just plain paranoid. i can see absolutely no good reason to ban life jackets unless they present a serious alternative safety hazard, and "lolz pools are for swimming not floating faggitz" doesn't count as a good reason.

I never had a life jacket as a child in the pool, I might have had water wings, but never a life jacket, it's crazy.

I agree with Drinky about the town being bored.

Are the also putting into legislation a ban on ROLLER BLADES?

we need kevin bacon to schedule a dance, then through the magic of 80s movies the town will dance and see the folly of their ways.

If your child is unable to swim and in danger of drowning then they should either be in the kiddie pool or have a parent in there with them.

Water wings are gay too.

I had one of those inner tubes attached to a vest when I was small, then I wore water wings. I learned to swim very early on, though.

I took private swimming lessons and went to Catholic school, so we didn't learn to swim in gym class or anything, we played dodgeball in a church parking lot for gym lol. But most public schools around here teach swimming as part of gym class in 3rd grade or something, so most kids would eventually learn to swim anyway, life jackets or no life jackets.

From what I understand though, a lot of kids in and around the bible belt are homeschooled. Yet another one of its drawbacks!

I don't think there's any need to ban life jackets in pools. If anything, they should ban kids under 3 or whatever from public pools because they PISS AND SHIT in them and it's gross.

it always disgusts me when I see toddlers in the pool with their diapers all puffed out from the water, because you just know there was seepage.
