SEGA ANNOUNCES ONLINE MULTIPLAYER FUNCTIONALITY IN VIRTUA FIGHTER™ 5 FOR XBOX 360™

Premier Fighting Game Franchise Goes Online In Europe and North America

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (July 6, 2007) – SEGA® Europe, Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. announced today that the highly-anticipated arcade fighting game, Virtua Fighter™ 5 for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, will feature an online versus mode at launch in Autumn 2007. The Xbox 360™ version of Virtua Fighter™ 5 is based on the latest arcade version update and features both analogue-stick and D-pad control, as well as vibration support. The game also includes an improved Quest mode featuring more CPU rivals, items, and emblems for character customisation. The DOJO mode has added features including leaderboards, training move settings, improved throw and escape training, and the option to change your opponent’s position and recovery type. These all work to create a more refined DOJO mode where players can improve their fighting strategy.

Now featuring an online two-player versus mode via Xbox Live®, Virtua Fighter™ 5 will allow players to compete online. Players will also be able to select one of the 17 characters or customise them in Quest mode. Customisation features allow players to modify their characters by selecting from four base costumes and then attaching a wide range of unlockable and earnable items. Players will not only achieve victory by defeating highly-skilled opponents, but also by competing for prizes and earning in-game money which allows them to buy many items at an in-game shop.

“For a lot of very good reasons, Virtua Fighter™ 5 is regarded as the deepest and most revered fighting game available on next generation consoles”, said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe. “Bringing Virtua Fighter™ 5 to the Xbox 360™ will not only capture an entirely new audience, but will allow gamers to show their Virtua Fighter™ skills online against friends and foes”.

Created by the renowned development team AM R&D Department #2 out of Japan, Virtua Fighter™ 5 will be released in Autumn 2007. For more information, please visit www.sega-europe.com. For assets please visit www.sega-press.com.

Lol, after experiencing DoA4 online I dont think im gonna even bother with VF5 online. The windows are smaller, the moves are faster and more precise, add the latency issues inherent with online gaming and you have a big lose.

Sure people will champion it, but ive tried online fighters with MAME and 360, and the lag is crap.

But im still getting the 360 version too :D

Sega understands the importance of VF5, so I think they will keep an eye on the user input for online and work on patches, much like DOA4

Well I have DOA4, and it does not. I find it hilarious Team Ninja got it right according to you in a previous version, and borked it in the much more high profile DoA4.

Naw, it really does have amazing online play.

Quote
DOAU is smooth. Ultra-smooth. Silky smooth. Like a baby’s powdered-up behind smooth…well, you get the picture. Even online the gameplay is as fluid as ballet, even when character’s faces are being pummeled into the earth.

Quote
The visuals are absolutely stunning, there are dozens of things to unlock (including some things that were not originally in DOA2) and the online play has been implemented flawlessly, giving us, for the first time, an online 3D fighter that actually feels like a group of players at an arcade and even includes tournaments and championships.

Quote
The new countering system (realistically, the old one) is better, the environments are fantastic, and the addition of online play makes this game fuller than all of its predecessors.

Quote
Dead or Alive Ultimate kicks the ass squarely. It is a fast-paced, beautiful fighting game with an excellent online mode to boot.

Quote
It has the best online play of any fighting title on the market. If you dig fighting, you'll really like Dead or Alive Ultimate.

Hell, apart of the reason I enjoy so much is BECAUSE the online play.

I agree that online will probably suck for skilled players like you.  But it will be fun for casual fighter fans like me.  I hope that at least one decent joystick will be made for the 360 but it's unlikely.  They'll probably sell some low end Hori stick for $50 even though you can get a Virtua Stick High Grade for $60 in Japan.

DOA can be playable online because anything that you do, even button mash, will turn into into a combo.  This can´t be done on VF.  However, I still think this will increase the sales of the game.  If you dont find it compelling, then just play offline.

Any true Virtua Fighter fan wouldn't even bother trying this function even once. Or use anything else than an imported Virtua Stick High Grade for that matter. Geez, what kind of "competitions" will this allow? Between players which nearly always use the 360's atrocious d-pad?

VF5 kept receiving lower reviews than past installments because moronic reviewers kept bitching and knocking off points from their final grade because there was no online function present, unaware of the degree of precision mandated for highly technical matches. Looks like Sega caved in to these twits because of their bad publicity. Not that it matters on the market at all, since VF is pretty damn obscure in western countries compared to Tekken or Street Fighter.

Why complain about an added feature?  It's not like you have to play online if you don't feel like it would be an accurate representation of the 'live' VF5 versus experience.  You can choose to play local games too.  You don't have to play VF5 like you are trying to win an EVO tourney all the time.  Sega had to do this.  Look at Namco stepping up an adding online to their current and upcoming fighters.  It might not be a perfect experience but fighters have to begin embracing online multiplayer to remain relevant.  I love great fighting games and I want them to prosper.  As a genre I want increased innovation and development to go toward fighters.  That will not be possible if the genre remains stagnant in regard to their commercial viability.   And again for serious competitive play you always have the option to play the game locally at home or the arcades--for those in Japan.

SFA can be somewhat playable if you only meet people with extremely good connections, but it's a 2D fighter that's less complex than a 3D one

that lot of 360 owners who cheered on the advent of SFA on 360 (myself included) majorly did it because SFA was one of the last remaining Xbox games that they wanted to play, but really not necessarily online again other players

mostly it was because we didn't want to keep our old bulky Xbox 1 connected to the HDTV

You can get a custom stick with real aracade parts for not much more than the cost of importaing a Virtua Stick.  Buying a custom stick is probably less of a ripoff than paying an importer for twice the retail value of a Virtua Stick.  I'm still pissed that I wasn't able to get a Virtua Stick when I was in Asia.

Just because they gave it an online mode doesnt mean it will play well. They always have the 'performance may vary' clause and it will vary. If I can't get online fighters working well within my own CITY there's little chance of cross-nation hookups.

Nah, I had plenty of matches in games like Street Fighter Anniversay Collection, KOF Maximum Impact Maniax, SvC Chaos, and Dead or Alive Ultimate back home that went great.  Of course I also had TONS of matches that were like playing in slow motion or watching a slide show, too.

In Japan, it's different, especially when playing someone in the country.  It's like they're in the same room as I am!  But there's certainly no denying that playing online does make you have to change up some of the things that you do.  But hey, they have to start somewhere, and online play is only going to get better.  It's clearly the future of fighting games.

yeah well, it's no wonder that every SNK Neo-Geo re-release on PS2 has online play in Japan, and that it's removed from the NA ports

but then again, Japan is small, so wiring it all with optical fiber networks is relatively cheap, comparitively to the cost of wiring up Canada and the US

it's the same reason as to why Japan is so advanced in cellphone technology where the US and Canada pale in comparison... Canada especially since it's 30 million people for a territory even bigger than the US, so the urban mass can't justify the costs

Im talking about consistant performance. You cannot predict the quality of the performance prior to a match, no matter how many bars xbl is touting.

Any true Virtua Fighter fan wouldn't even bother trying this function even once. Or use anything else than an imported Virtua Stick High Grade for that matter. Geez, what kind of "competitions" will this allow? Between players which nearly always use the 360's atrocious d-pad?

..when was the last time you actually played vf5 yourself in a competitive environnement? I don't know anyone who play videogames anymore, I don't like hanging out in arcades, VF5 being online is awesome news for normal people with lives.

The fighting game elitism needs to stop, those kind of fans are killing their own games.

:lol This is probably the funniest game news all year. After all that pathetic "VF5 can't be online" BS they spouted, they do a complete u-turn... of course, they'll rack up a shitload of sales because of this, but they look like fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellows in the process.

Anyone who still believes Tekken 6 will be exclusive to PS3 is seriously deluded. It will be awesome to have all the big fighters online though, and I'm sure it'll spur Capcom to do something special, if it hasn't already. Man, I want Justice Gakuen/Rival Schools and Pocket Fighter online :drool

PROJECT JUSTICE. PLEASE. REVIVE IT CAPCOM.
