I think Sony has the same goal as Nintendo (get more people interested in gaming besides those that are already interested) except they are going about it in different ways. With HOME they are trying to appeal to the Myspacers and Second Life people. It's basically both of those ideas combined into one service. Nintendo, however, is trying to appeal to fitness people, old people, and women.

true, but they're still out of the price range of the casual gamer.  right now they need to focus on the core to help evangelize the ps3, which is why we're seeing a lot of sequels and familiar genres.

it's really hard to get excited about home, casual or not.  i just don't see how it will enhance the online experience.  packed-in headsets and the ease of chat invitations would have been enough.

Nintendo is not ruining gaming.  There will always be demand for more traditional games and if the demand is there companies will fill it.  Now, you might never like another Nintendo product again again and some of your favorite companies might spend development time on games that you consider gimmicky and stupid but that's life.

Anyway, back to WoW.  Now there's a game that killed gaming by making me lose interest in every other game that's not Fire Emblem, Gran Turismo, or Halo 3.

The hardcore gamer hasn't mattered for a long time... you think all those PS2 sales were from hardcore gamers? A lot of people are preaching "the sky is falling" and so far, I haven't seen anything that proves to me that gaming is anywhere close to being taken over by gimmicks and nongames. Well maybe that's because I am too busy playing stuff like Crush, Etrian Odyssey, Taito Legends, Blue Dragon demo, Eternal Sonata demo, Yggdra Union, and awaiting stuff like Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, and MGS4 to notice this so called death of the games industry. Hardcore gamers love their hyperbole (you get people like dark10x and "if its less than 60FPS I can't play it" or amirox and his 3D graphics on DS are abysmal routine*), it's just getting old to me :P

*yeah, they're not good but they don't hinder my overall enjoyment of the games in the slightest.

The Wii is going to be out for one year and already there is two new gimmicky control schemes in place of the Waggle which was supposed to revolutionize gaming.

dude the polar waggle of mario kart is totally different from the traditional cartesian waggle of twilight princess
new spacial mappings = new revolution

Scene-IT for the 360 was one of the only things that I was interested in from this years' E3. Everyone gets their own buzzer!

Anyone know why Sony hasn't already brought Buzz over to North America?

Most of the worries that people have are really not going to be an issue in the future. Just cause Brain Training and Nintendogs sold over 4 million doesn't mean that every game on the DS is a non-game. And interestingly enough, the best selling game in Japan on DS isn't Nintendogs or BT, but rather New Super Mario Bros.

I just don't see the problem when PS2 had its Eyetoy sell like 7 million units, people ever talking about Sony killing gaming. I'm sure a bunch of developers tried to imitate Eyetoy games on PS2, but it didn't cause hardcore games to stop coming. Tetris must be one of the easiest games to make, but that didn't kill the industry did it? The crux of this issue is that the millions of people who buy Mario's, Zeldas, Halos, Metal Gears, Final Fantasies, etc. aren't going to just magically transform into non-gamers.

Just saying if you're going to hate on Nintendo, at least hate on them for legitimate reasons, like making weak ass hardware that'll probably have an affect on competitor's hardware in the future.

My only problem with that is that it's for the PS2 and you know how people like to complain about their 360s dying? Well that was me with the PS2. Three fucking systems died on me, the last one died right before I went to play Time Crisis 3 for the first time.

Actually, given all the cheap bits of plastic that Nintendo rolled out, they'd be more likely to go to a Wal-Mart tupperware isle and say that.

My only real complaint about stuff like Wii Fit is that Nintendo certainly does have the resources to make a decent actual game that incorporates exercise and fitness as part of the game experience, but they don't even bother. They just make a shitty non-game wrapper using the most basic-think atari 2600 design level design principles and horrifically dated technology.

It's somewhat insulting to people like core gamers that actually appreciate the nuances of game creation and design, even if we aren't actual practitioners, and the whole effort feels cheap and as inane as the bad budget software sold for $5 near the checkout aisle at Fry's. No one wants to see something like that be successful-and thus copied-in the hobby, and that's why there is so much bitching about the Wii non-game titles.

Well put. Somebody asked if I "felt the same way about Yourself Fitness" and the answer is no--because that title (which I've used semi-extensively  :-[) has actual production values, lots of music tracks and audio patter, cool unique modes, dynamic workout generation according to user-set goals and feedback, and excellent stat tracking.

I thought to myself, "I might like WiiFit if it didn't use Miis and look like total shit." The degree to which it's been phoned in in the interface and "gameplay" (the bits you show to the player and the player does) is frankly obscene. It's not that it's a non-game. It's that it's a non-ANYTHING. Nintendo's not just saying "it's okay to make software that's not games," they're saying "it's okay to make software that's cheap, disposable, and shoddy." Fuck that.

Nintendo Defense Force is welcome to challenge these Actual Arguments!

we aren't really gonna see the effects of wii success on third parties until next year. as ps3/360 development on first-gen content wraps up, they'll be shifting resources to wii development. :'(

How the fuck is your flagship e3 title Wii Fit.  It just boggles the mind that the hobby Nintendo basically created at home, they are destroying it.

But sales talk :(

Man, I love how the Wiifans see Wiifit being the flagship E3 title (as Chris stated) as a good thing. Nintendo is actively moving away from actual games and all they can do is laugh it off as concerned gamers (about their hobby being fucked) complain.

Its crazy, I think Nintendo fans are really the only ones that exibit this. Was it some genetic mutation that took place over the "Playstation Years". The only thing they could harp about were handheld sales...which mutated into some vested interest in the company itself? Its definitely a bit creepy.

I'm a Sony fan but I could really care less about their bottom line as long as they give me the shit I want (same thing with MS). I guess the Nintendo faithful its all about CARING. BLARGH

I don't really have a console bias- I have certain types of games that I like to play, and pretty much none of them are found on Nintendo home consoles.

Even I'll admit that the DS is pretty good tho.  That's in SPITE of the lame touch shit, not because of tho.

Nintendo fans have been going through prolonged Stockholm Syndrome by their corporate masters since the N64 days. They don't like "gaming" as a hobby, but instead "nintendo gaming", which has always been roughly compatible with the values of enthusiast console gamers until the last couple of years (non-games on the DS, and then the Wii).

So the longtime nintendo fanboy has a hard choice-either abandon Nintendo to get the kind of gaming experiences they want-but without the Nintendo branding and characters they love-or stick with Nintendo and hope they "snap out of it" or something, which isn't going to happen and Iwata's conference comments should underscore that.

I think the huge assumption is that third party publishers are going to ramp up for the Wii in droves based off its hardware sales. I doubt that will happen, and we'll see the next "spin" of US/EU 3rd party games next year look a lot like this year's batch.

The A-team development is on the 360/PS3/PC, and the college interns and b-teams are working the Wii. I think that the Wii's different demographics and purchasing patterns pretty much dictate a 3:1 US/EU hardware advantage over the 360 for the A-team caliber investments to really be worthwhile, something that I really don't see ever happening. Now for Japanese 3rd parties, the choices are harder, because unlike the US the hardcore gamer slice of the pie seems much, much smaller.

This is true.  Any person that buys a Wii almost never buys a game or pre-orders anything.  It's like Wii Sports and an extra Wiimote and that's it!  Occasionally, children and Nintendo hardcore will push a "big Nintendo title" like Mario Party, but everything else sells like crap for the most part.  The only third party title I've seen sell at all is Resident Evil 4, and that's due to the price point more than anything else.

One of my non-gamer friends back east got a Wii a month or so ago, based on the hype and I guess getting to play one at a party or something.  She came online and said something like "We've been playing Wii Sports a lot, and we'd like to try something else."  I decided to be nice and think of a good recommendation for this person (and her fiance), and really, the only things I could recommend were renting Wario Ware, Monkey Ball, and Rayman. . .three mostly enjoyable games with little content.  There is nothing else on the system worth owning.

Did you also recommend Cooking Mama or Mercury Meltdown?  If she thought WII sports was fun, she would probably like those two.  Usually I would also recommend Zelda, RE4, and Super Paper Mario for a Wii only gamer but they are probably too complicated for gaming beginners.  Perhaps your friends can get some GC games since there're so few good WII games right now?  New gamers would probably enjoy something like Mario Kart for the GC.

Her fiance already had a GC, so I'm assuming he's already got the GC games that interest him.

To be honest, Cooking Mama slipped my mind and I didn't even know Mercury Meltdown existed when I talked to her.  I probably wouldn't even recommend Cooking Mama.  At most it would be a rental recommendation.  It's just a very repetetive, ungood game.  From what she said, they were more interested in the multiplayer stuff. . .but they don't like Mario Party.

they're still video games....

whether someone wants to call a game a video game or not is up to them.... but it's a console, and it has games.

in fact i'm really thankful they're exploring new types of games.

i've played all the genres before...  i know what they're like.  let's see something new now... thank you nintendo.

The Wii is great for people who want to play a video game for a little bit and then get some work done.

The Wii has been out for a long time now and is still hard to find on the shelf..... it's a great system and a ton of fun.... I'm a gamer and I love the Wii because it has great video games.  This doesn't turn me into a non-gamer.

Then about 1/4 of it was them showing the latest franchise retreads in their library, all infected with shitty waggle or stylus horsecrap gimmickry.  This was done to keep the traditional "hardcore" fan buying Nintendo shit, all the while preparing them for the eventual day that Nintendo no longer makes anything resembling an actual game, which of course the ninthings will just say is a brilliant stroke of genius since it will make Nintendo more money, and isn't that what matters?  Also, they paid lip-service to the idea of supporting online but then completely missed the boat when they left one of their biggest multi-player franchise titles coming out this year decidedly OFFline.

In fact the way Nintendo is doing games right now is what the future of games will be.  They will just get more and more interactive on all possible levels.

If anything... the PS3 and XBOX are behind....   for anyone to think that xbox or PS will make another sit-down hold a controller and press buttons type of console is absolutely crazy.....  they will go for some type of physical interaction as well on their next one.

So what they have nice graphics....  been there done that, they almost have it life-like.... great... I'm still playing a VIDEO GAME with FAKE CHARACTERS!

Gameplay > graphics any day of the week 100 times over.

Great games are NEVER made by their graphics and that's a fact.  It's a perk, not a game defining aspect.

Wii makes great and fun games.  Not to say xbox and ps3 don't....  Nintendo simply just shouldn't be ignored because they took a different route...

And Nintendo didn't have near the budget xbox or ps3 had... and people get upset when their system doesn't have some super-processor in it?

uuhhh.... go give them billions of dollars and then they'll make one.

Quoted for all kinds of truth...once HD penetration is there, Nintendo will make a system to take advantage of it.

they're still video games....

whether someone wants to call a game a video game or not is up to them.... but it's a console, and it has games.

in fact i'm really thankful they're exploring new types of games.

i've played all the genres before...  i know what they're like.  let's see something new now... thank you nintendo.

The Wii is great for people who want to play a video game for a little bit and then get some work done.

The Wii has been out for a long time now and is still hard to find on the shelf..... it's a great system and a ton of fun.... I'm a gamer and I love the Wii because it has great video games.  This doesn't turn me into a non-gamer.

you're a non-gamer. that said, it's hardly a shame you left the hobby, ape.

Prost, I liked you better when your posting here consisted solely of trolling Corny and waxing about WoW.  And I didn't like you at all then.

Which is to say, you are a tard.
