Interesting take on E3
« on: July 13, 2007, 04:28:31 AM »
Apparently this wired editor doesn't think that Sony did anything significant enough to improve its position.

http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/07/analysis-e3-con.html

"Which brings us to Sony. Unlike every other Sony press conference, this one was not a slo-mo car crash. Jack Tretton took the stage a humble man, joking and kidding around with Kaz Hirai, who slotted neatly into the Kutaragi/Iwata position. He even said that they realize that past success doesn't guarantee future success. Certainly these facts are already in evidence, but it was clear from the tightened-up format of the show that Sony realizes that they need to make some changes to get back on track.

They had the most to prove and thus, to make people excited revealed projects that were much earlier in development than either Nintendo or Microsoft. Either one of those companies could have shown trailers of upcoming games like Sucker Punch's fascinating-looking Infamous. But they chose not to. Sony really had no choice; they had to wow people with new games.

Never mind the fact that some of the games they've been showing for like two years now aren't out yet. And that some of them (Afrika? Eight Days?) seem to have disappeared entirely. They need to show brand new concepts. Problem is, everybody's got great games, this generation. Simply having great, even groundbreaking games, won't put you back into first place. They need something truly standout. Maybe Home is it, but they shied away from providing any real concrete details about that.

And neither is the PSP redesign going to do much of anything against the DS. After all the speculation -- built-in flash storage, new functionality up the wazoo -- all it ended up being is a slimmer, lighter version of the exact same form factor. It's not going to make a difference to consumers, because it won't add anything new and it looks the exact same, at first glance (and second and third) as the last one. The ability to output high-quality video sounds good, but we'll see if that really attracts people.

In short, Sony didn't show anything that would make you think they're going to get things turned around. So for the foreseeable future, things will progress as normal: Wii will continue to close in on Xbox 360, which doesn't have the mass-market appeal yet to fend it off, but does have the hardcore gamer cachet to continue to outsell the PS3

What's the deal with Chris Kohler?  Unlike most denizens of gaming forums, I don't consider people like Luke Smith to be celebrities.

Chris Kohler attacking Sony is dog bites man.  Kohler attacking Nintendo would be man bites dog.  This is total and complete non-news.  This is expected.  It's a given.

Kohler is a sad man.  Why Wired went with a ninthing as their main vg news source I'll never know.

Sorry for the crap link.  Nvnews mentioned the report and I thought it was reliable since wired is semi-respectable.

Wired is a respectable enough mag, but Kohler is not credible imo.

I've listened to him on a few Retronauts podcasts. He's pretty knowledgable, and seems to be an all right guy. The sometimes douchey 1up crew are often contradicting him on the podcast, though, even when he is correct. Yet he keeps coming back for more.

Sony didn't do much to change their position, it's just that compared to the competitions conferences, they did so much better. At least Sony revealed new features for their shit, and a new model psp, and a few new games. No, the conference didn't convince me to buy a ps3, who was expecting that? But it was a vast improvement over the cluster fuck Sony has pulled for the past year.

I certainly want that new psp though

Yeah, Sony's conference could have done without the HOME, or some of the really awkward situations in it.. i.e. Chewbacca and Jack Tretton, that guy Phil Harrison comes off as a real douche though, Jack Tretton at least is like how I'd imagine a game exec to look and act. I liked how they showcased Killzone... the room went dark and you saw those Jin-Roh guys appear on screen, that was really cool. Some of Sony's first and second party stuff looks very good, although there weren't any non MGS4 exclusives that were all too interesting to me. UT2k7 would be interesting if it wasn't also gonna be on PC!

the media and anylists seem very out of touch with how the gaming community feels about E3.
