What should I watch next?
« on: July 15, 2007, 06:11:44 PM »
So, I am wrapping up season 2 of The Shield, and I am feeling it might be time to take a break, what with the sour taste of "Co-Pilot" in my mouth.  But hey, aside from that, the show's been pretty great.

The Shield, S3 - Drinky is already in it, and it sounds good.  I have also heard from several people that 2 is the weakest season, so I may be out of the shit.

The Wire, S1 - I've already seen S1, but I would like to give it another go, namely so I can compare it to. . .

Homicide, S1 - I have never seen this before, but it's inspired by the same source material as The Wire.  I would like to see how they compare.

I've seen Scrubs up until the point that it starts sucking ass.  Even most of the good episodes were marred by sappiness, and Braff is too unlikable to be starring in things.

Aww. Well, I suppose I'm a sucker for the sappy/goofy shit. I did like the majorities of S1, 2, and 4, as well as a few other good episodes scattered throughout the rest, but the show did get gradually worse.

In that case, I say Homicide.

i haven't watched the wire and i don't have any immediate plans to, but i swear every time i leave the house SOMEONE will say something totally insane about the wire like 'it isn't even television. it's just baltimore' or 'it's so good it isn't entertaining.' so i voted for that

It's television for people that dig quality writing.  One of the stated goals of the writers is to use no artificial exposition.  Important events sometimes happen off camera, but there will be no flashbacks or explanations; you are just expected to be following the dialogue closely and piecing things together yourself.  The show demands the viewer's attention, unlike, say, The Sheild, which I am able to watch and play a game or surf the net at the same time without a major comprehension hit.

Even though it's not in widescreen, it still has the great production values you expect from HBO, too.  There are some shots of season 1 still stuck in my head, more than a year after I watched the season for the first time.

Watch The Wire.

I'm completely in the David Simon tank.  Homicide was appointment viewing for me back when it was on (I'd go to a friend's house on Fridays, watch X-Files, then switch over to NBC afterwards), though I didn't start watching until the 3rd season.

I only got around to watching The Wire recently, and devoured the whole thing in two weeks.  So from a completely selfish perspective, watch The Wire, so I have someone else to talk about it with.

The thing is, TVC says he's going to watch the season he's already seen.

It's all good.

TVC: Make Drinky and MAF watch it, too.

drohne: It really is good.  There are some (mostly minor) aspects I can see putting people off, but it's extremely well-executed in pretty much every phase.  If you have any tolerance for police procedurals at all, it's worth watching.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest The Shield, but only cause I already like that series, and I haven't seen The Wire.

It seems I miss it every time it airs, though. Heh.

Turtle was really amusing in his blithe faith in Vince's success, and his complete lack of concern with living a lifestyle that he hadn't remotely earned.

There's a bit where Vince signs a credit card receipt in a wine shop, and Turtle yells "Save that signature, it's going to be worth something!" as they walk out, which really sums up his character.

I'm just happy someone else is watching the show who's likely to actually read my Unified Theory Of Entourage, and not complain that my overanalysis is ruining his ability to enjoy lifestyle porn.

Hey, stop acting like I'm not watching. . .or Memles from GAF.  I can't stand the thread at GAF because it's filled with stupid fratboys that think every episode is perfect.  If you even dare to say that one episode isn't so hot, they all jump down your throat.  STOP OVERANALYZING they whine.

There have been 4 episodes since then, and the show has focused on gag situations more than ever before.  So far, I'd say they're hitting 50% of the time.  Of the 4 episodes since the doc, 2 have been really good and funny, and 2 have been really bad.  The plot has moved forward very, very little, which is disappointing all around, but it seems like they are just rehashing bits of previous seasons, plotwise.

Still worth watching.  If it wasn't, I would have checked out.

Yea, you seemed to be on the edge of shutting it down. If you're still watching, it has to be decent enough.

Well, it helps that it's the summer and there aren't many new good shows airing.  As far as weeklies go, Entourage and Big Love (which is fanfuckingtastic) are about it.

Entourage is always smooth and easy, even when it's not good.  Once you're in the habit, it's almost more of an effort not to watch.

Enlighten me.

I only know how to do this with utorrent.  It is fairly simple so I am sure you can figure it out with other programs.

First, find your RSS link.
1.  Using mininova, go to the search box and type a fairly granular search.  For example, I put in "entourage eztv" since the eztv version is usually amongst the first to hit the web.
2.  When the results screen hits, somewhere aboce the list of hits, there will be a big orange RSS button.  Hit that button and copy the URL it gives you.  This RSS link will automatically look for all new entourage episodes that have eztv in the descriptor, ie, all th enew episodes that hit the web.

Now, the RSS link in hand, open up utorrent.
1.  Once in Utorrent, go to Options -> RSS downloader
2.  Hit the "Add" button and paste the RSS link in the box that appears.
3.  Hit okay or whatever,

Now all new Entourage eztv torrents from after the moment you added the feed will be automatically downloaded as soon as they appear in mininova. You no longer have to search for feeds.  It's automatic.  Like watching TV.
