how was "bell" any less obvious than Mark Rein? and in the case of Bell, how didn't he allude just as much to being who he is by PMing a poster who dissed him with an uncanny question?
GAffers frequently register the nicknames of famous people, plenty of them being part of the game industry... I don't see how things are that different, what if it was to be some OAer's joke character who posed as him? or some random newbie who used it because it sounded cool? I saw people registering with names as CliffyB or Gabe Newell on other boards
bottom line is, Hitokage and Jim Cordeira recklessly revealed who the famous guys were to sound like heroes-- most any forum moderator or admin will ALWAYS take these occasions to valorize themselves in front of the forum crowd, and GAF's administrators are no different
This is a truly remarkable post. Let's look at this one more time keeping in mind your second paragraph.
Mark Rein registered as his real (full) name on the board, he made a post explaining what happened with his product at E3, and signed it with his real name and title. This is the real Mark Rein revealing himself publicly to speak as an authority figure. He wants people to know who he is but because of what happens in your second paragraph this is in doubt. Hitokage verifies that he is who he claims to be, the thread moves on. Mark Rein: "Hi, I'm Mark Rein. This is what actually happened at E3. And BTW, I'm really Mark Rein" Hitokage: "Yeah, he is"
Bell alluded to one person in a private message who he was. That private message was made public by the person he sent it to and although you could guess it was really him you didn't know because of paragraph 2. Then Jim confirmed that it was really him. A poster who had no public exposure, hadn't made any forum posts, and just registered because he wanted to send a private message to one person.
I know it's fun to slam GAF admins/moderators and all but this is just fucking stupid.
