More seriously: doesn't MS have policies against this? I know that I'm certainly no allowed to post as a representative of my company on any forum, and I can't imagine MS being any different. Especially for corporate VPs. Will there be any fallout/consequences?

Sure, Bell was wrong to PM this guy, but Jim and the moderators didn't have to add fuel to the fire by telling the community that it was indeed him (this story would've died right then). Furthermore, it's messed up that they told Patrick that his account information had a Redmond-based IP address, accurate e-mail and birthday listed. That's sensitive information that I wouldn't give out to anyone, or even confirm to the gaming paparazzi.

Willco I hate to break it to you, but the world does not revolve around console war bullshit. I think Jim just got excitied, which really doesn't excuse his actions or 1up's "hard-hitting journalism". I doubt there were any ulterior motives behind this.

I actually have a deep personal history with GAF turning flippant forum posts into oversourced news stories against all sensible journalistic ethics or reason.

IT'S ALL JUST A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY REPEATING

Also, I totally disagree with Willco that this is in any way related to the fact that Bell works at Microsoft. I'm sure if this were Kaz or Perrin, we'd be seeing the same level of forum explosion. GAF craves drama, and the beast must be fed.

I'd rather keep the console war bullshit out of this thread and focus on the ethics and possible blowback.

again, it was dumb of him to send the message, but there's three levels of really bad ethical judgment going on here:

1) a Master ninja makes Bell's PM public
2) moderators confim the message came from Bell
3) 1UP makes this manufactured drama their top "news story"

And I'm not saying that this is console war shenanigans, but there's clearly a level of bias over there in terms who is protected and who is not. Jeff Bell was thrown underneath the bus by the moderator staff and I'm not saying because the Xbox 360 Entertainment System (available for just $299!) is not the choice for folks who run the show, but really because the dude is that new "wooden stiff from Microsoft". If this was Kaz, or more importantly (to stress what I was trying to say), someone higher-up with a developer that the kids love, this incident would have not occurred. At least in my opinion.

The moderator staff has always been in control in how to mold mob justice for the forum and it won't get out of control unless they want it to get out of control.

I'm not even sure you could say I was "fired". I posted pissed off after the Madden release in 2003, saying a lot of negative shit about GS management after they had basically bungled the launch of the game. My boss, who I never really got along with (liked my old DM better) showed up at my store and showed me a print out of those posts and I was like, "so is this supposed to impress me? what the hell?" and he started saying a bunch of critical horseshit to me. I told him he was acting like a dickhead, and he said that I was fired. I told him no, I think I quit when I called you a dickhead, dickhead. I don't really see how it's relevant. GAF has a respectable privacy policy for "insiders" that I don't think indicates or implies a conceit on GAF's part.
