Your favorite board games
« on: July 18, 2007, 05:15:04 PM »
I recently ordered a "mystery game" pack from tenga.com - three games of their choice. I got "Blink", which is like Uno with symbols instead of numbers; "Dead Man's Hand" which is just a fucking card deck, and a really good one called "10 Days in Africa".

The object is to arrange all your tiles to make a ten-day itinerary of travel throughout Africa. But you can't arrange them yourself; you have to draw tiles and then replace them from your rack. It can make for some intense situations when one person discards the tile you need, only for the person after them to pick it up and make you rethink your whole strategy!

I'd love to see a U.S. version of this game to help the geographically impaired (like myself). Make it a tie-in with The Amazing Race!

What are your favorite board games, EB?

Settlers of Catan, Monopoly, and Scattegories.

My favorite non-board games are Skipbo and Catchphrase.

Balderdash and Malarky, which are both bluffing/bullshitting games.

Balderdash is based around creating definitions for obscure words, and Malarky is about faking answers for "Why don't horses vomit?" type questions.

They're good if you have a clever, literate crowd, or if you don't mind games devolving into total silliness.

Risk and Monopoly are always good if you're looking to get friends mad at each other.

My only problem with Monopoly is that you never finish a fucking game.

Scattergories with the fam, and Risk with the friends. Ticket To Ride is a really fun game some of my friends in Buffalo play, but I haven't been able to get my friends down here into the game, yet.

Risk, Stratego and Pictionary.

Axis and Allies was cool the one time I played it. Like a deeper version of Risk.

My only problem with Monopoly is that you never finish a fucking game.

Do you play the proper way, where if someone lands on an unowned property and doesn't buy it, it's up for bidding?  That speeds it up a bit.

Usually there's a quiet before the storm in most games I play, where almost all the properties have been scooped up, but there aren't any monopolies and everyone's too tentative to make a trade.  Once the ice gets broken and houses start popping up, it gets riskier.

Also, there's a game called anti-Monopoly, where you get to play either as a Monopolist or an Anti-Monopolist, and there are different rules for each.  I played it years ago, and it seemed a bit unbalanced, but they've apparently gone through a couple iterations since then.

Did I just unknowingly bite from Dane Cook? I've got my clapper at the ready to take my life if necessary.

It's all good.  It would just mean that you indirectly bit from Louis CK, which is cool.

I totally forgot about this game, which is tons of fun:

We also play Balderdash, but we typically use a dictionary, or my copy of the DSM-IV TR.

No!  :-[ We also play the way where you get all the monies in the "pot" when you hit Free Parking. That's probably not good for speeding shit up either.

Sounds interesting, are the rules online anywhere?

PDF of the rules.

The two types of players are Competitors and Monopolists, who are meant to represent small businesspeople vs. big conglomerates.

Competitors have the advantage of being able to build houses on any property they own, right away, can build 4 houses before switching to an apartment (the equivalent of a hotel), and can still collect rent if they get sent to prison.

Monopolists have to get all of a color group to build, like in Monopoly, have one less building/rent tier, but charge way more for rent.  The actual different rents are printed on the cards, not in the PDF.

I love Trivial Pursuit, especially the 90s Time Capsule Edition and the Pop Culture DVD edition. Taboo is a ton of fun, and so is Apples to Apples.

I really enjoy 500 Rummy for card games. My family also plays 31 aka Knock.

I love Monopoly, Clue, Scattegories, and Pictionary. Cranium is a great time with friends.

Oh, and I like Chess. I'm kinda good at it even though I'm not skilled enough to play using any type of strategy. I only learned how to play a few years back (to impress a guy, hah!) but I guess I'm lucky or something.

Computer games? Solitaire and CHIP'S CHALLENGE. I loved Pipe Dream when I was younger too--anyone know where I can find a download of it?
