gods help me, I made a SPREADSHEET for a videogame
« on: July 19, 2007, 10:51:42 AM »
I just spent the last fifteen minutes making a spreadsheet to help me optimize building production chains for 1701 A.D. (awesome german PC citybuilder). Has anyone else here ever sank to this kind of metagaming extreme when sucked in my a game?

wtf is wrong with me, this is beyond normal bearded man gaming and is too extreme :'( :'( :'( :'(

:lol

Don't feel bad. There was this "Video Craps" machine at a local indian casino. I was determined to beat that fucking game and so I went home and made a spreadsheet of all the possible combinations and best ways to bet. It didn't help me in the least but holy fuck was I determined!

:lol  Well, if it makes you feel any better - as someone who likes to make amateur RPGs in his spare time, I looked up the algorithms of the FF5 battle system, to see the calculations and probabilities they use in calculating damage/critical hit %/etc.

I used to do similar things in MMORPGs and MUD games to measure which equipment was most effective.

I thought of this after I made this post and remember him talking about his mission force cyberstorm spreadsheets and thought oh god i r zebco. :( :(

Do you still see him anymore? I saw on QT3 that he's off to work on common componentry for Windows Live stuff now. Always seemed like a pretty cool duder.

yeah, i was just at his bachelor party last weekend. he's a crazy kook but an amiable one nonethless, and he's doing quite fine these days. he has made many a spreadsheet for wow auction house speculation, and recently he has created a completely tested full-on oblivion mod roll-up (with installer!) he'll be pushing out soon. he is gaming's consummate ur-dork.

I did some rudiementary auctioneer hacking for auction house automation, but it was barely worth it on my server. :(

I've thought about going back and doing full blown msi'd rollups for the best Infinity Engine mods (for BG2/IWD/PS:T/IWD2) , but the approval logistics in terms of getting permission from developers would be a huge pain the ass. It wouldn't take more than a evening or two of work apiece to get up and running because windows installer is STAPLES EASY BUTTON EASY.

I'll give a stab at it this weekend, there aren't too many PS:T mods out there especially compared to the huge number I had installed for BG2.

No Starforce on 1701 A.D., not sure what Aspyr used to be honest, but it hasn't kablooied my machine. Be warned though-the Gamersgate and Direct2Drive versions don't have the latest patch ported over, and it's been months since it was released.

I did one just now for budgetary reasons so I could curb my expenses for the fall. I'm on a slippery slope.

Games? Can you send it to me?
