The Epic Story of the 3000$ xbox
« on: July 22, 2007, 04:25:28 PM »
yeah it's a repost from my own gaf thread, but I rarely make big posts like that and since many of you don't read/cant post at gaf, i figured i'd share it with you fruitcakes.

This is the most loltastic xbox modification project EVER.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=593791

What's special about this Xbox? Nothing except that the owner has spent an hilarious ~3000$ on it. I just HAD to comment on this

Comments from me in bold.

Sure thing, keep in mind this is the cost of the project over time. Not just the xbox. It includes shipping, broken products, install services etc...

300$ (brand new xbox system in 2001ish)  we are in 2007
135$ for my very rare halo 2 edition case (bought it as a system and gutted out parts) so instead of using that halo 2 edition xbox, he ripped out the innards to put the innards of the 2001 inxbox in it, reducing its value greatly
15$ Arctic silver 5 because that fool actually upgraded his xbox cpu, more on this later
8$ ATA 166 cable (fits perfectly) the xbox comes with default 33mhz ide cable; i've upgraded 3 xbox myself using those and the performance upgrade is minimal
12$ New rubber case feet (50) this one is ok
55$ X3 CE < got broken from one of my ram installers, got screwed as usual..... (damage pics pg 3) so that's the modchip
45$ another X3 CE..... both modchips are pictured on one of the pages......shit happens
7$ 1.1 GPU heatsinkok, for the upgrade
105$ Ram upgrade (due to 1st motherboard being fried, it has a faulty ram install, then was shipped to another ram installer) he actually had the xbox upgraded to 128mb;
this will have no results in games since they well all hardcoded for 64MB, but kinda useful for XBMC; but then again, the xbox is underpowered for serious tasks

32$ X3 IR kit, i broke that one... hahah... (cut the wires thinking X3 IR was solderless w/ X3 chip get that man away from electronics!
32$ fresh X3 IR kit, I installed this one and it works... (did not cut wires)oh jeez
25$ new best of the best PSU, (Minebea)yeah he actually changed the power supply.
60$ Brand new samsung version B and he changed the dvdrom.
2$ extra screws (lost some)
260$ 750GB hdd
25$ White lit led controller ports regular stuff
15$ BI color leds + new power eject board, was sent 2 faulty boards, one did not fit, and the current one is blue on one side and white on the other, regardless of setting.that
dude and electronics...

10$ virgin eeprom His xbox was such a frankenstein he had to get a blank virgin eeprom to avoid being banned since it was using parts from like 5 xboxes. I'm not sure if
that can actually avoid the ban, considering those parts could had been used online before
25$ 1 official HDTV pack (purchased long ass time ago)
60$ two Controller S (matching blue)
45$ shipping costs over time
30$ 22 farad aerogel capacitor its explained somewhere else, but it's let the xbox keep time for more than 2 days if the console is unplugged from the wall. I shit you now
7$ dead daughterboard, my fault again....
15$ish for a usb converter for linux and hes not running linux on the final machine
$4.50 compressed air << expensive haha.....
$20 (forgot about this, almost) gotta have an account for live. 20$ to renew the thing with a 3 month for the 360. I renewed it using the 360 but the account was originally made on a xbox 1.

So thats about $1349.50 give or take a few dollars, its late in the night and I've been out of school for a while, haha.... And I'm sure I'm missing somthing. This also does not account for all the games I have purchased. One of the above pictures the xbox is sitting on top of 40 games.

Keep in mind that this does not account for the cost of the original halo 2 beta with documentation and a boatload of fees for wire transfer via tripple bank transfer.

He actually bought a worthless multiplayer halo 2 beta for several hundreds of $. YOU CANT EVEN PLAY THE THING

Did you also notice that I have the XDK launcher installed? I think I mentioned it somewhere but I purchased an original disk, not that pirated bullshit. That put a dent in the wallet also. But either way both are highly collectable.

Highly collectable, but still not worth a damn on the legal side of things, it's still borrowed

I'm not going to release the exact prices on what I paid for the above two things. The totals are not 100% accurate. I parted out the halo 2 LE system so it could have costed more or less.

The thread itself is an hilarious series of epic hardware **** one after the other as he destroys random hardware trying to get the whole thing to work. In the first post he sets out to create 'the most expensive xbox ever' only to end up with some sort of 3000$ frankenstein. From my aproximations, guts of over 4 machines were used in the process.

I also hope he got a switch installed for the cpu upgrade, since the first fools that attempted those kind of cpu upgrades ended up with massive timing bugs in most retail games.

I had to share that with the class.

edit: the guy says that with the betas and dev kits, it ended up at ~3000$. The hardware ended up at 1350$. So yeah 1650$ for the outdated software

the memory upgrade is handy for xbmc

I used to have a modded box, I used a xenium ice solderless. big mistake, go wired I will next time. Thing came loose too often.
This guy seems distinguished mentally-challenged. there was a halo 2 multiplayer beta? And he bought it regardless of it being useless.

My modded Xbox has been sitting in my apartment for almost two years now, untouched and unplayed.  The chip came loose (I think) when it was shipped over to me, and I seem to be unable to find the tools to open it up and take a look.

Yeah, as I recall it was online-only and only lasted for a short time.  Pics leaked out and people went nuts.

It was more fun playing the French version of Halo 2 that got leaked a month or so before the retail release.  :spin
