Office\Elevator Etiquette

Is it normal for people to give a casual, 'See ya!' when getting to the ground floor of or exiting an office building after a day's work even though you have never seen them before in your life?
A formal, 'Goodnight' with a knowing nod of a hard day's work at the coal face I can understand but this shit is too perky.
