KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A (PS2) Thread
« on: July 25, 2007, 06:15:42 AM »
For those who might have missed it, KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A is an upgrade to last year's KOF Maximum Impact 2.  This is also the first Maximum Impact game to be released in arcades; the game came out a few weeks ago, and has quickly been released for the Playstation 2 as well.

The PS2 version appears to be a straight-up arcade port with a few added modes. The main menu has Time Attack (the main game), Versus, Practice, Network Battle (restricted to Japan only and is a pay service from KDDI), Options, and a Jukebox mode where you can check out voice and music samples. That's it. No challenge mode or story mode is present. The match structure has been changed to resemble the older KOF 3-on-3 team style (which you could already do in the previous MI games' versus mode anyway). I haven't tried versus yet, but time attack is strictly team battle only.

Like the arcade version, all of the characters are available from the start, and have four outfit colors per regular/alternate versions. The graphics are basically the same as Maximum Impact 2, although most of the females seem to be noticeably bouncier and their undergarments have been made thinner (I.E. thongs for more fan service). I would have preferred more outfits to this. :P

The entire cast from MI2, minus Armor Ralf, is back, joined by Ash Crimson, Blue Mary, Makoto Mizoguchi (from Data East's Fighter's History series), and newcomer Xiao Lon, who is a bit like a female version of Duo Lon. She has a kiss super move that's also going to be popular among fanboys, and while on the subject, I have to add that Ash's alternate outift rivals Hanzo's as one of the worst design choices ever made.

Characters have been tweaked to make the game more balanced, although against the CPU, I was still getting destroyed by Seth and Billy/Lilly Kane. New moves have been added as well; I need to play more before I can really say what the major changes have been, but everything that's been added is definitely welcome.

There's one new background (for Mizoguchi, I think), plus new alternate versions of the older stages. Some have new music; I noticed that the alternate version of the Kyokugenryu Dojo plays stage music from Sengoku 3.

So is this game worth it? If you liked MI2, it's definitely worth getting and plays even better than before. However, if you only played MI2 for the single player (since it was quite lengthy if you add in the challenge mode), there's nothing here for you; this game is made with strictly with multiplayer in mind. I'm using the game as practice for the arcade version.

I haven't beaten the game yet (a team of Lily, Seth, and Xiao Lon owned me several times), but hopefully more features or modes can be unlocked. I'm not holding my breath though.

I plan on taking screengrabs a bit later on, if anyone's interested, but I don't know if anyone even cares about this on Evilbore.   :'(

Beat the game once, got nothing for it. So basically, Falcoon and his crew removed the story mode, challenge mode, half the outfits for every character, and Armor Ralf, and added in four new faces, plus new moves and tweaks. Game play is the most important thing, and it is a bit better, plus the new characters rock, so I think for the hardcore it's a worthy purchase; for more casual players, you may want to pass.

I *think* the recoveries may have been improved a bit. Things didn't seem quite abusable, and it also seemed easy to roll away or to the sides now. Don't quote me on this though.

The order in time attack is against seven teams of random characters, eighth fight against Jivatama, Duke, and Nightmare Geese, and then a bonus singles match against Makoto Mizoguchi...then the credits.

Pics are coming soon...I took a bunch and am now going through them.

I'm torn on this. Skimpier costumes! But I only play fighters single-player, 'cause I don't know anybody locally who I can get to sit down and play a fighter.

falcoon should be banned from character design. ash and blue mary have revolting alt costumes, although ash was kinda revolting to begin with.

I think it looks like this weird take on Sora from Kingdom Hearts.  One guy on another board said it looks like Kefka from FFVI, but I never played the game so I don't know.

I'm torn on this. Skimpier costumes!

:lol Seriously I cannot think of another game where the girls' PANTIES got more noticeably crammed up their rear ends.  Early Maximum Impact 2 screens kind of looked like MIA does now, so it seems they couldn't quite decide on just how perverted they should be.

Compare Maximum Impact 2 with MIA:

Weird that I got MI2 to have a more widescreen-style look last year and this is 4:3.  Same card and everything...

Well, you can still play single player...there's just no story.  This doesn't bother me in fighters since once I go through the story once, I don't care anymore, if I even did in the first place.  But I do think that the game should have been released at a lower price, since it is lacking in modes compared to MI2.  Actually I think this would have made a perfect PS3 downloadable title like Tekken 5 DR.

falcoon should be banned from character design. ash and blue mary have revolting alt costumes, although ash was kinda revolting to begin with.

Some of the alternate costumes are pretty cool.  I like what he did with Terry (both versions), Kyo, Iori, Mai, etc.  But then on the other side of the spectrum you have Ash.  I like Blue Mary's outfit cuz it's super-cheesy and reminds me of something from the 1980s.  Especially with that hair.

Ash is just so fucking weird.  I like the way he plays, so I use him, but he's such a bizarre metrosexual character design.

I like his art, but I gotta admit, HE creeps me out a bit.  Plus he apparently based Nagase on himself.

A female version of himself.

I hate Falcoon's art.  Back in the '90s, Capcom had the best 2D artists (Kinu Nishimura, Akiman, Edayan), and SNK had at least one good artist (Shinkiro)...now, Capcom has Shinkiro and SNK has Falcoon, and that seems to be basically it.  So sad.  :'(

yeah, falcoon is a tard but at least he's trying to breath life into KOF.  unfortunately his breath is pickled assfarts in a bag but whatever.

on a side note, lyte edge always does a great job with pics and putting out good reviews.  i love him for that.

BUMP because of KOF XI's U.S. release.  Did SNK USA ever announce this for a domestic release?  It's awesome too!   :D

Regulation A gets a lot of arcade coverage and has several guides out here in Japan, but at my local game center, no ever plays it.  :'(  No one plays any fighting games there, actually.  Just shit like Aquarian Age Alternative.   :-\

I wonder how SNK's 3D games do in the US, saleswise...their 2D games are total niche products, but are the 3D iterations any better?  They never released the very good 3D Metal Slug in the States, I think.

I'd be curious to know how "KOF 2006" sold.

"Very good?"   :yuck

That was a miserable attempt at a 3D shooter.  I think they could get it right with a second game, if KOF MI2 is any indication.  I hope they up the visuals on Regulation A2 and release it for PS3 or 360.

Yes, and proud of it.  For example, I always have to buy the fastest performing videocard on the market.

But this has nothing to do with Mondain magically lowering his standards for a Sony game.
