You guys are a rather literate bunch, and many seem to like fantasy. So, is Martin's series any good? I've heard it starts good but the latter books have been met with mixed feelings. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the series, in your opinion?

I actually prefer Steven Erikson's books, but Martin's stuff is good too.

MAF you're referring to Malazan Book of the Fallen? I looked it up on Wiki, sounds interesting.

Its a great series. The first book will be kind of confusing because conceptually the way things 'work' and the world the story takes place in are very different. At LEAST stick through to the end of the second book 'deadhouse gates' which IMO is the best ive read, but im about 3 books behind, but I think the series is almost over.

Gene Wolfe is like the greatest English prose author of the past 25 years AND he invented Pringles, but he looks like this:

China Mieville looks exactly like the quality of his prose, which is "trying too hard":

I go over this constantly, but GRRMurder is fucking awful and does nothing but murder characters or have them have disgusting sex or get maimed or become stupid after being awesome.

You'd be better off reading any number of books, R Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing, or anything Gene Wolfe has ever written, in particular.

Also, I just started George RR Martin's series. Boy was I surprised to see the people posting at the start of this thread.

So far the first book is pretty good. I am having a little trouble dealing with Standard Entitlement-based Royalty Fantasy right now, for some reason. Maybe I should go back to Erikson, or China "Tries Too Hard" Mieville.

The City and The City is VERY good; read it in the library over the course of a few days. I haven't read his earlier stuff though.

I was only able to read about 100 pages of Perdito Street Station. Not for me, I'm afraid.

I will say that Rothfuss did a really, really good job w/ The Name of the Wind, however. You can tell that the novel was worked over for years and years- it's very polished. Not only is it written well and a good read besides, but it has the most important characteristic to be a crossover success imo- short chapters.

Despite it being his most name-checked, Perdido Street is maybe Mieville's worst. give The City and the City a try, seems more up your alley
