You collect stuff - its got stats that you increase....

What ever was your final verdict on these upward mobile dungeon crawlers?

the old PC gaming fogies on Qt3 love RENGOKU 2, so I might give it a shot. RENGOKU 1 is ugly crap, though.

I personally think both are competent. and agree that one is a bit rough on the eyes, but unlike anything else on handhelds at the time.

If you die your body turns into liquid mercury like T1000 and drips thru to the bottom floor of the tower dungeon and you get to start  over.

I was just curious if you had an opinion on these as they get no love anywhere and seemed to be something youd like a bit.

ITs funy that Hudson does these and Bomberman act zero...and both games have a similar premise of defeating the competition and moving to the top of the vast structure.

Rengoku 2's GFX are 20x better than regoku 1 - but both games deliver the goods for dungeon crawlers.

SO - whats yer take on Nightmare of Druaga?

man, never-land's last gasp? i always hope that SOME DAY they will make a game as good as lufia II again but this hope seems to be pointless.

i never did play CIMA, though i did buy it.

sorry to hijack your thread!

rengoku 1 was pretty boring and awful to me, mostly because of the asstasm of the control. i didn't play 2 but again, dungeon crawlers are not my forte.

oh look drinky i was wrong i did review a roguelike! if you consider rengoku a roguelike in any way:

Rengoku has everything from random drops to random dungeons - very roguelike

i really liked nightmare of druaga.

cima had such potential, but the godawful boss fights -- note: not the pathfinding -- ruined it.

CIMA?

What about Crimson Tears? I LOVED the combat in that crawler/grinder.... the cell shaded GFX are a nice touch too.

What about BOUNTY HOUNDS?

Bounty Hounds made me nauseous whenever I looked at screenshots of it.

King's Field Additional 1 was really cheap and terrible. You only ever fought one enemy at once, and it's full of unmarked secret doors. Every view of every segment of the dungeon was a super-compressed jpg. :(  But it had that King's Field atmosphere, somehow. And it's got nice music.

I'm still having fun with BG:DA2! We lost our save (due to SOMEBODY saving over the wrong file), so we restarted on Hard with the same characters. I'm minmaxing the hell out of it now, and the monk just gets more fun to play as you buff up her speed and unarmed combat.  The crafting is really pretty cool. Each gem gives you a different effect depending on whether you've got it on a weapon, on armor, or on a shield.

I had my monk wearing gloves that cause bleeding damage. Blood everywhere! They trailed blood from the wrists during and after combat and made her look like she'd attempted suicide.

Yeah, you really could work around the pathfinding in CIMA pretty easily if you stuck to setting up simple paths for the guys. Some of the boss fights were annoying due to the hit detection, I found if you charged your guy's weapon, it would make hitting the bosses a lot easier. I'd love to see a sequel, this game had such potential, and I found it really charming in spite of all its flaws.

CIMA?
a weird RPG by never-land, the developers of the lufia series.

as near as i can tell, it came about because natsume knew that lufia had a fanbase in the US but was tired of paying taito too much money to be able to use the IP in the US, so they just went straight to the developer and had them make an original game, which was weird and nobody bought. i bought it, but never played it. literally never, just plain never put it in my GBA.

but i have it. it was not part of the great GBA purge of 2007.

I've been interested in Crimson Tears.

ITs a roguelike with girls who mix karate with swords and other things ;) just a different way to grind - cellshaded chikkas with kicks against guards in helmets with guns, etc.

CIMA is just the name of the evil alien race in the game.
