Civ4: beyond the sword-your ticket to sleep deprivation
« on: August 01, 2007, 12:01:49 PM »
oh god I have one of those "morale team events" today and I got three hours of sleep last night. THANKS CIV4.

I know TVC picked it up last week, but is anyone else playing this fine piece of PC software? I'm really digging the Ryse's and Fall's Paradox-like historicity, and the Final Frontier mod is a lot of fun as well. The changes in the core epic game are also very significant, as most of my tactics have been nerfed to some degree (early axe rush is harder thanks to better AI, anti-tank infantry bust up the industrialization beeline for a conquest victory, and bombers are much harder to mass now, etc.) but I'm really enjoying the new corporations and espionage features.

Extremely solid expansion pack. Not as much of a "WOW" one as Titan Quest's earlier this year, but very, very solid offering for a Civ expansion (which are generally quite timid and lightweight).

So does this mod have spaceships n stuff I gather? The mod at least I mean. I've never been huge on civ. Im stupidly obsessed with the efficiency of my gaming hobby and it keeps me from really diving into some games.

There is the space race victory as has been in Civ since the beginning. You build the spaceship, and you win usually 11-18 turns afterwards once it reaches its destination. There is a sort of change up in the expansion though-it used to be whoever launched first won, now you can choose to launch later with more components to beat someone who launched sooner with a more ghetto spaceship.

There is also a mod called "final frontier" which sort of plays like Civ meets Galciv. It's very well done IMO.

If you aren't hot for Civ I'd pass on this. If you do like Civ it's a total must-have.

As for gaming efficiency, I sorta changed around my way of playing this year to play fewer games but play them in more depth and at harder difficulties and challenge. It was a good decision that I haven't regretted and fits very well with my tastes.

I was thinking about doing a "frag teaches you how to play Civ" post with a gameplay examples on GAF and copying it here, but really I doubt the huge effort would be worth it in terms of attracting new people to playing the games. People on both boards seem more preoccupied with their console games and such advocacy-by-example just seems pointless.

I tried the Civ IV demo and I didn't really care for it. :( I may pick up the full game. It was just a demo after all.
