Is "Meeting the Parents" a Serious Step?
« on: September 26, 2006, 01:33:09 AM »
It's always been sort of the rule of thumb in my family.  It's kind of like in Godfather when Michael courts that one chick in Sicily under the supervision of her parents.  Just wondering what people are accustomed to.    ???

It very much is BUT in this day and age, that courteousy doesn't really seem to be extended that often between couples. Only the most serious apply. I know I'm a nervous wreck when I first meet the parents.

I've always had success with meeting the parents and haven't worried about it too much.  I only dated once across cultural boundaries and I never knew what her parents thought of me, and it was a very short lived relationship. That factor really changes things though. The only judgements I've had to face have been "Is he an okay guy? Does he make my daughter happy? Does he act with respect?" I've never faced questions about where I've come from and what my heritage is.

don't let them get to you?  compliment her cooking?  get them a big dish?  I'd keep a little paranoid.

I always recommend a pre-emptive attack. On the day you are supposed to meet, go over at 5am and wake them up.

Who's got the upper hand now, parents?!

I was also thinking about dressing up as a railroad conductor and asking them why they didn't finish the track yet.

Well for me it was strange i didnt tell my mom i was in a relationship over the net. And i sprung the fact that my friend would be spending the weekend with us 1 day prior to her coming down. I didnt tell her it was a girl and so it was very strange. My mom's face was hilarious. Since it was just my mom and I for so long it was funny I was the first one to bring someone home  :P

My mom fell in love with her though, so i got my mom's approval but we've been through a lot of shit and people's opinions change. Hence why i cant tell my mom were getting married. I'm kind of sad about that cause i know my mom loved her to death and thought of her like she was the daughter she never had.

My father has never met my girl, nor will he right now cause of the shit he did.

But back to topic meeting the parents is a big step. Usually your looking for acceptance but its a proving ground i think cause if they dont it will strain the relationship and if it works it works if it doesnt it doesnt.

Didn't you meet your girlfriend in the IGN Vestibule?

Anyway I dont think it's a major step MEETING them...having dinner with them a couple of times and then when you go out with them is a bit more major imo.

Bastard :lol

White women are ok. They aren't godly like latinas, but they're definitely less annoying than black chicks, must of whom are pretty fucking loud and annoying. Generalizations FTW.

Since I'm an assman, I'm not really into many white chicks. And I really like exotic women too, so that's a strike against them.

I never saw the big deal, is it really that important what parents think?  The girl I am seeing now is worried how my brother of all people will like her (I made the mistake of telling her that he was cracking jokes about how young she is).

I guess some people are more influenced by what their parents think, but I believe if the parents did a proper job whatever person their kid brings home will be just fine.

Good luck and Willco try to eat dinner only using chopsticks.

Those aren't standards MAF, they're preferences!

Standards would apply to a statement like "no fat chicks"

Definitions are important.

I don't have many crazy standards, mainly because I realize I don't have a right to. So you won't hear me begging for a big boobed dark haired gamer who reads Richard Wright in her spare time.
