Quote
I was working at target today and the 2 MS reps. came in to check the games, consoles, and etc. So of course I asked a few questions.

Is the price drop true?
Check out the news on AUG. 8th.

Are the saying anything else on the 8th?
(smiles) you will find out

How much is the Halo 3 xbox 360?
It will be the same price as the Elite since it is a Elite I said him a thought it was just a 20 gig and he said no its really a 120gig

MS really deserves to lose this generation. I love their software lineup, but whoever is in charge simply doesn't know how to run a fucking business. As we speak PS3 sales are rising in the US, and it could possibly outsell the 360 in the July NPD. MS is far too hardcore oriented for their own good: they simply don't understand that their success comes from mainstream buyers. Having 3-5 SKUs is simply distinguished mentally-challenged. The Elite has been a failure since its release.

What MS should do..

-Get rid of the Xbox 360 Core
-Make the Halo 3 SKU a limited release (IE, get rid of it after Christmas)
-Make the Elite a limited release (cease production after 6 months)

We know that 360 production costs will be cut in half once this "Falcon" chip is done. It should be ready before Christmas. The Premium's price should be lowered to $300, $350 at the highest. The Elite would continue to be marketed as what it is: a hyped up, "bigger" Xbox. That's fine, but production should cease after 6 months. Sony is smartening up and will now only have 1 SKU. Nintendo was smart enough to do this from the beginning. MS needs to wake up and smell the roses. At $300 the 360 could compete with the Wii, especially with Halo 3/Madden/GTA this holiday season. Sony would remain in last place for awhile longer.

But instead of doing that they'll probably announce ANOTHER SKU on August 8th. Fucking idiots

You're talking about MS not knowing that they should cater to casual gamers when you think they should get rid of the core? No. Core is great for impulse buys and people will buy cores in mass amounts come this fall, for Halo 3.

The Elite is a failure because it's pretty much sold out everywhere, am i rite?  PD, you suck at videogames.

Do you really think the Halo 3 SKU won't be a limited edition?

The core is produced on such a small level that doesn't even make a difference except to be an entry level 360 for cheap asses.  SOUNDS PRETTY GREAT TO ME.  Are you really surprised that the PS3 might outsell the 360 in July NPD because it.. DROPPED 100 FUCKING DOLLARS  (BTW, lets see what happens when all those 60gbs sell out  LOL).  Sony is just as dumb as ever and Nintendo is just as smart as ever hardware wise.  Same shit, different day.  Nothing is changing.

The Elite is sold out for the same reason the Core is: low production levels. It has nothing to do with people demanding it.

It's not that big of a hit. It's first month sales were ok, and after that it's gone down; people don't understand why they need one, and why would anyone "jump in" with that instead of just getting a Premium? Failure!

A $300 Premium, with adequate supply , could easily go toe to toe with the Wii. Instead moms everywhere will be looking at the prices confused until they give up and get a Wii. :lol

The Wii is the only next gen console that's at a mainstream price. "<$300" is still the tired but true standard for this, and if MS lowered the price to that level they'd have big success. I don't think it would outsell the Wii during the holidays, but it would easily be in the same ballpark. Casual gamers are not just the ones who make the Wii a success: they made the PS2 a success. Halo 3, Madden, and GTA are the top games that demographic wants, and having them on a $300 system would be a huge success.

I think it all depends on what people consider to be a success. I dont see high hardware numbers and non-existent software to be a success. I dont see high hardware numbers and a limited amount of software in 'the not too distant future' as a success either. I see it as an anomoly.

People go oh wow wii is only 250 dollars or whatever. People, thats a gamecube with a LOW TECH motion sensor device. Nintendo makes STUPID profit off their machine. I just cant fathom why people are so willing to almost give money away to Nintendo, and wince when X360 doesnt drop 200 dollars. Its BUSINESS! If Nintendo's console had half the tech in the ps3 or 360 they'd charge as much too.

The x360, while not pushing insane numbers, is currently the only next gen console that is actually delivering at a satisfactory level on almost every front. People cry hardware malfunctions even after MS gives people a length of warantee normally reserved for washers and dryers. You cant win with some people and thats fine. Being a "success" by my definition does not guarantee a win tho. Its clear a lot of people see doom in gaming's near future as the Wii Anomoly continues to CONQUER ALLLLL.

The price of the Wii is not totally relevant. The wii is the gotta-have-it-item. The 360 core at the wii's price (assuming there are no other skus, just as an example) would get mauled.

I think the 360 is the best system by far. Gaming is about GAMES, and the 360 has that. The Wii doesn't, nor does the PS3 (yet). My biggest gripe about the next gen so far is that actual games have taken a back seat to irrelevant arguments about Blu Ray/HD-DVD and what "non-gamers" want.

Maf, all indications show that the 360 needs a price cut.  I agree it's easily the best next-gen system right now but keep in mind that Sony & Nintendo have many more fans.  For the "expensive system", there are still people out there on the fence but most of them are probably still leaning towards Sony and just waiting for Sony to prove itself.  Creating an even bigger price difference would definitely push more of those undecided towards 360.  Against the WII, the strategy is less clear but perhaps a $250 360 would cause people to reconsider if they would want to have a equally priced system w/ better graphics + more games.

You say that sales don't matter but out of the 3, the 360 needs to sell well the most to continue getting good games.  The PS3 has a miniscule userbase but many Japanese developers are still releasing their top tier exclusives on it.  It's incomprehensible why they're doing so but perhaps they think, like Michael Pachter, that the PS3 will still end up on top in the long run.  Or it might just be due to stupid Jap patriotism.   Anyways, selling a lot more 360 units would seriously force Jap developers to reconsider if the PS3's weak 2nd position in Japan is capable of producing more money than the 360's strong 1st position in the US.

Or maybe 360 should just start coming with a blu-ray drive since that's the reason why Pachter thinks that Sony will end up on top.

360 has GREAT games and bleh hardware numbers. Devs WANT to stay with the 360 and I think will continue to do so even if the Wii becomes THE console. Easy development with a gaming demographic that's familiar to them is a HUGE draw I think.

PS3 has as much a chance in Japan as X360 these days. The japanese just wanna waggle with Wii and whatever with DS. I really dont know whats going on over there anymore.

I won't go that far: it's undeniable that they are "expanding" the market to a certain degree. Whether any of these so called non-gamers have bought any games to go along with their Wii, who knows: I doubt Reggie would release that information lol

I'm more upset that Nintendo seems so distant to the hardcore crowd. Whether it's the constant shunning of online play or their inability (or lack of interest) to create NEW IPs aimed at the hardcore, they don't seem to care. Expect to be playing Mario/Metroid/Zelda for the next decade fellas, because Nintendo doesn't care. Can you imagine if Miyamoto was told to just continue making Donkey Kong rehashes? Why then are they continuing to rehash the same games instead of making new stuff people care about? Why is Aonuma just "the Zelda guy" now lol. Make something new plz

Don't worry, if N continues on this track, it will come back to haunt them.  Look at what happened to Sega.  To a lesser extent, it's happening to Sony now.  As sucessful as the PS2 was, its hardware power was greatly exagerrated.  Many sales were generated simply from people beliving that the PS2 was some kind of supercomputer.  Sony try to pull the same Dreamcast tactics with the 360 by labeling it as a Xbox 1.5 but the sucess hasn't been repeated so far.   This time around, gamers are far more reluctant to believe that the 360 can't keep up with the PS3.  MS is also burning a lot of good will though if they continue to have quality issues.  People might be much more reluctant to buy the next MS console at launch because it's taking MS so long to work out the kinks with the 360.

BTW, why do you give a shit, PD?  You don't even play games.

For the last few weeks the PS3 has been on top of the 360. Whether this continues is unknown; MS just announced their own price cut.

But I agree: it's a shame that people will spend $500 just to have a PS3 instead of getting a real gaming system. I couldn't care less about Lair, Heavenly Sword (IE God of War with a chick), Motorstorm, etc. Give me Bioshock and a sugar pill.

It's a shame that a $600 purchase doesn't validate itself, but that's Sony for ya! Average launch lineup, and even today the game library is sparse. The next few months will bring forth some goodies I admit, but not nearly as good as the 360's.

Like I said.  Sony's name still matters to many more people than MS.  I have friends and cousins who play games that don't go online for info or read magazines.  I tell them the 360 is the better system but they won't belive me.  They're like "but the PS3 has much better graphics."  Then, I tell them how the same games on the 360 have better image quality and framerates, how GOW won all the "best graphics" award.  But they remaine unconvinced because the PS3 has a blu-ray drive and therefore can support 1080P gaming.  It's not just Wii buyers that are distinguished mentally-challenged, you know?

PD, did you seriously us vgchartz as a source?  I mean, I've no doubt in my mind that the PS3 is outselling the 360 right now... but really?

I said that they merely give a good look at what's going on, not a perfect look lol. We already know the 360 has had trouble topping 200,000 sales a month recently, and PS3 sales have skyrocketed since the pricedrop

Putting 2 and 2 together=PS3>360 in July
so in other words, using vgchartz as a source is just as reliable as saying "we know it's outselling because it's common sense!" right?

PS3 will outsell 360 in July. Possibly in August as well. It will be more interesting to see if the bump lasts in to the fall. Even fucking GameCube had a bump when it went down to $99.
