Half of 2007 is over. Post your favorite singles of the year
« on: August 03, 2007, 01:03:45 AM »
Welcome again my friends to another music thread sponsored by Dr. Darius. Once again we will sip scotch while posting our favorite singles released this year. While I'm sure more than a few established artists will be represented in your choices, I hope people can introduce artists their fellow posters may not have heard of. With that said, I raise my glass, a toast to good music, great times, and above all friendship.

Rock Music:

I haven't listened to much recent rock so I can only of one nomination.

Foo Fighters - The Pretender
http://www.fmqbproductions.com/epks/2007/foofighters/content/foo_thepretender.mp3

Pop Music:

I'm not a big pop fan at all but these songs made me chuckle, shuffle my feet, and in some cases clap my hands

Mika - Grace Kelly

Maroon 5 - Makes Me Wonder

Hip Hop/Rap

2007 has been a tough year for hip hop. Despite that more than a few songs have impressed

UGK ft. Outkast - International Player's Anthem

(if you like rap listen to the first verse, which is Andre's. Utterly brilliant)

Pharoache Monch - Desire

Kanye West - Stronger

Lil Wayne - Outstanding (produced by Dr. Dre...)

I know I just made a thread dissing Wayne, but this is great.

Do they have to be singles?

Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm

the only single that I've really liked I think.

Singles?  Eh.  There've been a few cool cds this year.  Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is pretty rad.

Oh, and I just discovered Dungen.  Omg Swedish rock <3

I'm not really either. These are like the only popular singles this year that I like:

Ne-yo - Because of You

T-Pain - Buy You a Drink

Maroon 5 - Makes Me Wonder

Rihanna - Umbrella

I won't be posting any of the japanese music that I've been listening to. None of you would care anyway.

OMG BEEZY

That Ne-Yo song is fucking amazing but I didn't feel comfortable posting it; didn't want people to know...

That bridge/chorus is amazing and sooo old school. It's something our moms would appreciate most likely.

definitely agreed on brianstorm.

i don't tend to listen to a lot of singles. i listen to album-oriented stuff, for the most part. it still has singles, except i'm either just buying the album because i like the artist, or finding it via reviews, recommendations, etc. rare for me to find a band because of a single and rarer still that i'll hear a single more than once or twice before deciding to make a purchase.

oh! since i'm in the US and it came out this year here, i'm nominating LDN by lily allen. stuck in my head tastic.

Something pretty fuck awesome is going to have to come out to keep this from being single of the year:

Björk - Earth Intruders

Honorable mention to The White Stripes - Icky Thump.

Although admittedly, I stop paying attention to new releases a few months ago beyond a few notables.  I'm just now getting around to listening to The National's Boxer.  :(

The National - Mistaken for Strangers

I like Fake Empire more, though.

It's been a kinda shitty year for new music.  That said:

Of Montreal, Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse

Justice, D.A.N.C.E.

Apples in Stereo, Energy

Also, PD, don't kid yourself, that newest Kanye single is terrible.

I'm sort of disappointed yes: it's worse than Gold Digger and his other mainstream first singles. But I really like his verse structure in the song. Lyrically it's also less interesting than Gold Digger, which was actually pretty damn impressive (mainly the "18 years..." verse).

Can't Tell Me Nothing is pretty bad imo. Honestly I'm getting worried about Graduation. I saw some live videos of him preforming verses from the album, and they aren't good. I thought College Dropout and Late Registration were damn near classic. I hope I'm wrong :(

Invincible did come out this year, but Map of the Problematique did too and that song is about 20x better. (It's "download-only" but fuck it...they really should've made it a full-blown single - it's the best song on the album)

I know in some ways it is hypocritical, but I just can't get behind a song that's music is based around one prominent sample.  That Daft Punk song was popular, and he hasn't done jack shit with it.  Verse quality aside, it is a shitty, lazy song, especially coming from someone that had hype around his production and how he put together songs.  If that is the best of his latest batch, then Kanye hates rap fans.

Also I forgot this one.  I kind of have a love hate relationship with the album, but I dig the song.

Yeah, I'm not going to argue with that.  Invincible is pretty weak, and it shouldn't have been a single.  But I do like the video.  If not MotP, then my vote would go to Exo-Politics for the next single (if there is one).

I agree. I have nothing against sampling in general, but when songs sample prominent hit songs it seems cheap to me. Like the "Mo Money Mo Problems" which is just them rapping over the entire chorus of Diana Rosses #1 hit super smash that's as timeless as any song you'll ever find. Come on. One of the reasons Kanye is respected is for chopping up soul beats no one has heard of and having an ear for hooks, and I prefer that over him rapping over samples, such as Stronger where he essentially raps over the chorus of that song. It's lazy. But according to everyone who has heard the album, it's a strict departure from his previous work, and the production is better. I hope that's the case.

I really, really like Kanye in part because his music relates to me more than most. But it's impossible to defend him at times. Oh well.

The JUSTICE song is omg amazing I likkkke

I also think Kanye is in serious danger of fully letting his hype go to his head.  I found Late Registration to be at least a degree inferior to The College Dropout (despite, in general better standout tracks), and again, the new songs aren't doing much for me.

Feist - 1,2,3,4

Otherwise, I've been spending 2007 catching up with 2006.

Also, I hate that Bjork single so much that I haven't listened to her new album yet. :/

I agree. And while the media has praised him for awhile (mainly because his albums were great), I would imagine that they're waiting for an excuse to totally shit on him. He seems like he may become another M Night. When M Night released Sixth Sense he got a lot of praise, but there was always the perception that he was an arrogant bastard. Once he started making bad movies the media (who he had treated like shit) was ready for revenge. Kanye better watch out.

You're right about the difference between those albums. LR's standout tracks are superior to much of College Dropout's best tracks. I loveee Roses, and listened to it every day after I found out my grandma had cancer. But College Dropout had stuff like All Falls Down (perhaps his best song), Spaceship, Two Words (Mos Def killed it), etc. The best thing about LR is that Kanye's flow improved; one the first album is rather nasal at times, and slurs words. That's greatly improved on LR overall. Yet on these new singles, he's once again slurring words, and while the flow on Stronger is impressive enough the one on Can't Tell Me Nuthin is embarrassing.

Another deal breaker: while the album will have guest appearances, Kanye is the only rapper featured on it allegedly. One of the coolest things about his previous work was that he could get great rappers like Mos Def and Talib to hand in great verses; hell, even Cam'ron dropped the best verse of his horrible life on Gone lol. No Common? No Jay-Z/Nas track? Come on. Not to mention all the rappers on his label who'd benefit from being on there.

Not sure if these are singles, but they're the best 2007 songs I've heard.

The Shins - Sea Legs

Klaxons - Golden Skans

Klaxons - Atlantis to Interzone
Granted, I think this may have been 2006 it was first heard, but the album is 2007. So it is iffy.

And this is 2006, but sort of has caught on as a summer 2007 song

Grace Kelly is probably the winner of most popular and quality 2007 single. Bitches love song.

good call on patrick wolf. nice to see someone else liking patrick wolf. i love him. i don't have anything so strong as "love/hate" with the magic position (album) but it's my least favorite of his three CDs. still, it's far and away better than most things.

map of the problematique is, indeed, vastly superior to invincible. invincible kind of makes me want to skip it sometimes.

as for earth intruders, i think love and hate are both extreme responses! it's better than i thought it was at first but it's still sort of the low-rent sequel to human behaviour. better songs abound on the CD IMO. for me in a sense the "single" for the album was wanderlust because hearing bjork perform that at coachella is what convinced me to buy volta.
