artiificial depth is created when ten zillion folks play any game, for either good or distinguished mentally-challenged reasons -- they find the exploits and the specific control parameters to most effectively use the system. smash brothers remains a shallow, dumb game, nonetheless -- it certainly wasn't designed to compete with the likes of vf5, where layers upon layers of consistent, deliberate technique are uncovered with mastery.

Eh, it has its crowd.  Sometimes if I'm in a particularly less casual-gamer crowd than I usually am with, someone'll bust out VF or Soul Calibur.  They're great fun.  But when I'm with my regular group of friends, Smash Bros. is the ideal pick.  Add that with this promised online play and it's guaranteed to be fun to those people.

they rarely all use use the same characters, many of them use completely different characters as their primary characters so that may possibly suggest there's *GASP* depth.  I bet you haven't seen half the moves they do.

the game's definitely a mascot fighter but that's actually what makes it good, you have to not only learn you're character's strengths but learn how to counter against every single type of enemy (in air, from a floor below, against items, etc.) since their attacks aren't standard kicks/punches/throws that you have to simply learn the timing for and the percentage health system instead of the standard life meter lets it work.  there's no way a game like this could have worked if it didn't have high production values and unfortunately the only way that could happen is by making it a nintendo mascot fighter.

What does not having to use the same character have to do with depth? Isn't that the opposite? That means, that the characters are so easy to use that one can switch them on the fly without dedicating to one character.

Also, Naruto fighters have as much depth as that video like Prole said. Not that that's bad, because like Smash, those games can be fun in the right setting.
